  1. I live near Fresno and when he pitched for them he was sterling. But his pro career [except for last year's World Series performance] has beem medeocre at best, I'm afraid. I wonder what went wrong? Perhaps the same thing that happened to Kerry Wood. When he was pitching at Grand Prairie, he was smokin' 'em left & right. Now, he's already washed up. Sad. I never cared for Weaver. Use to watch him when he pitched for the Yanks and my thought was why would a pitching-starved team like the Tigers trade him to the Yanks? It was fairly obvious after a season. Apparently Duncan was able to do good things with him last year but he was too stupid to realize that he should stay with the Cardinals.
  2. I haven't looked at this thread in a long time but I have to say I was quite surprised to see someone actually making a case for Barry Bonds. I understand we're all fans and you should be loyal to your team, etc. but this seems to go beyond that. Anybody who talks about the "overrated" Ruth has to be a little suspect I'm afraid. Pre steroid Barry was a HOF candidate. Steroid Barry has destroyed his reputation and it's enough of a travesty that he passed Willie on the HR list. Hitting 756 is a milestone that should be suspect and never celebrated until an honest athlete comes along and passes Aaron's mark. Similarly, as far as I'm concerned, the single season mark for HRs still belongs to Maris.
  3. Except they have it in both categories. Wonder if someone made a mistake. Assuming not, it must have timed out because it only went to Running Low in mid April. It couldn't have gone that fast.
  4. Exactly. There are those who criticize Roach and Roy Haynes for insufficient technique, for that matter, usually in the form of a back-handed compliment. It's nonsensical. There's "how fast and complicated can you play?" virtuosity and there's "how much incredible music can you create?" virtuosity. There's an astounding bootleg of Rollins, Henry Grimes, and Klook, recorded in Aix-en-Provence in 1959. Anybody who can fly at that level is so far up there that "technique" is a detail. I'm reminded of a conversation I overheard at a Grover Washington concert in the mid-70's. A group of beautiful and stylish young women were discussing a party they were planning to go to after the concert. This was some sort of college function. One of them was wearing denim, but that does not begin to describe how her simple outfit was supremely elegant, hip and refined. It was a work of art. But denim. "They say no jeans allowed," her friend warned her. The one in denim gave her a look. "Honey," she said, " I am beyond jeans." Great story Tom. LOL for sure.

  6. It's a terrible rag. Hasn't been good for goodness how many years. Newsweek isn't that much better either. How could you have any confidence in a mag that brought you People?
  7. When it comes to Tinnitus, I try not to look at the web. Never found much helpful. I came across a forum once and reading the posts actually got me more stressed than I already was!
  8. I have the CD version of DJ Lounge and I love the session. If I remember correctly, we had a lot of discussion about it on this board.
  9. I have the D.J. Lounge one but as a Japanese import, which I don't believe (I hope) has Move on Over. I like the D.J. Lounge quite a bit even if, as Dan says, it's one of those ordinary run of the mill Sonny sessions that he probably forgot about after he made it.
  10. I received an email from Amazon France that this cd, originally recorded on Argo, is now available. Couldn't find out much about it but ordered it, along with two of Les Tresors du Jazz compilations, which I'm looking forward to. Here's the link for Sonny, http://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B000OPP68M...4671_pe_snp_68M

    Delmark

Check out Jimmy Forrest's All the Gin is Gone. It's Grant's first session I believe.
  12. I guess I don't see anything wrong with it. When you buy a cd or anything, unless the seller sold it to you at a cheap price, with the understanding that you wouldn't resell it on ebay, you have the right to do with it what you want. Now, we may not like that, but that's just the way of the world. Maybe the buyer bought the Mobley to help finance other cds that he bought? There could be various explanations.

    Junior Cook

I'd recommend Junior's Cookin from the Fantasy label. Really cookin' cd (no pun intended). Wasn't terribly crazy about the Steeple Chase ones but You Leave Me Breathless with Valery Ponomarev is really top notch.
  14. It can be extremely annoying. It seems to happen sometimes in business where people are a few minutes late for a call. I'm guilty of that myself on occasion and I usually just make appointments, unlike my wife who is always 15 to 20 minutes early. It drives her crazy that I do things at the last second. It's hard to tolerate people however who do this constantly, especially if they are more than 15 minutes late. We have friends who never show up on time so we tell them to show up 15 minutes sooner than they need to and that seems to work out well.
  15. I wouldn't mess around. These things get worse, not better.
  16. I recently picked up the Jimmy Smith Bashin', not knowing part of it was on the Mosaic and liked what I heard so based on that I may now pick up the Mosaic.
  17. They show a new Charles Kynard CD coming out on Mainstream. Don't know if that's been discussed but something to look forward to.
  18. Great label. Here are the ones I have that I recommend: Pepper Adams Quintet Bob Cooper Conte Candoli Quartet Danny D'Imperio Blues for Philly Joe Danny D'Imperio Glass Enclosure Don Fagerquist Octet Leather Feather Presents Bop Herbie Harper Sextet Richie Kamuca Quartet Stan Levey Quintet Marty Paich Quartet Frank Rosolino Quintet
  19. I think we're partially there tonight. I just hope that with this incident behind us, that's not the end of it and that other transgressors are not let to business as usual.
  20. So you know where I'm coming from, I've been an Imus fan for over 20 years. However, lately, he has been getting kind of boring, what with all the politics and the country music, and I didn't listen to him as much lately. But this is just fucking ridiculous. What he said was wrong but he said things like this for a long time. If you want to say it's all wrong, yes you're right. However, he apologized profusely and he did a lot of good things, helping to build the children's cancer wing for Hackensack Hospital, the Tomorrow's Children Fund and the Ranch for Kids with Cancer. It's a sad reflection that a moron like Sharpton can assume the mantle of leadership for getting him fired. How about Sharpton apologizing for what he did to the Duke players? Forgiveness in this country seems to have gone out the window. We wouldn't be realistic if we didn't acknowledge that all the people he skewered over the years like that idiot Matt Lauer smelled blood in the water and used the opportunity for payback. Sad day for this country in my opinion.
  21. I'll be preordering that Cohn et al bad boy in a couple of minutes.
  22. The LP version is a lot more common than the CD set so prices don't normally go crazy there.
  23. I just took a look at the completed auctions and except for the Hardee set, nothing's really out of the ordinary. Now, that is a hard set get in Cd, much easier in vinyl to get, but $1,300, that's a little absurd. Wish I had the set to sell.
  24. For transactions up to $3,000, it's 2.9 percent, plus thirty cents. There's been a lot of discussion about this Bidder 1, etc. That kicks in when an auction hits $200. Also, unlike before, you can't see all the auctions a biddier is currently bidding on or the auctions a bidder hasn't won. You could do that in the past but now you only get to see completed auctions that a bidder has won. It's definitely not a move for the better but there may have been some privacy concerns.
