Brad: You have done well at getting to the bottom of things such as this, with Mosaic, in the past. While it's fun to speculate, thanks for your effort in attempting to learn the truth. It's probably the least I can do since I was dumb enough to try to take advantage of the situation.

I'm with Soul Stream on this one. I find George a bit more accessible than Wayne. Conventional is not the right word, accessible is probably better. To each his own.

FWIW, I sent an email to Mosaic to see if they're aware of the situation.

Mosaic: The Complete Master Jazz Piano Series
Brad replied to Brad's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Actually, it's not as much a bargain as I thought it was. It's got a reserve on it. Still a great Mosaic however. -
Well, I'll go with the drunk part RIP, Dean.

I just saw that someone had this on Amazon as an auction. This is an out of print Mosaic of just solo piano and let me tell you it is terrific. Looks like a hell of a bargain to me. 3 of the 4 cds are still not opened. Incredible! I am not the seller.
-
Well, it sure is weird, that's for sure. I'll have to see what other Mosaics are selling on these retailers. Wonder if the Eldridge is selling that cheap.
-
I picked this up and while I don't have anything to compare it to, it sounds pretty good to me. I may have to pick up Seven Steps to Heaven now.

I think pawprints sells on ebay. I think I've seen that name before. Oh, Chuck, where are thou?

It's incredible that the Farlow import set is selling here. There must be something illegal about it. It's got to be different in some respects. How could Mosaic afford to sell it that cheaply overseas. I'm sure Mosaic wouldn't be too happy if they knew. tranemonk, I have the Roach Mosaic and it's great stuff. It spans quite a few years, from Sonny Rollins to Booker Little, it's hard to go wrong there.

I saw them when they were here in Madison, NJ and it was great. Harold worked non stop and he was just incredible. Nothing against Eric Alexander but I thought Harold stole the show.

After thinking about this, my feeling is you get what you pay for. If you try to get something cheap, that's what you'll get in quality. If these ever get through, I will be tossing them as I suspect they're frauds. There's not much money lost here (hopefully) and it will reinforce the old but time tested saying: you get what you pay for. Has anybody brought this to Mosaic's attention?

I've done the same. I just looked at the customer comments on public eye a couple of minutes ago. They get a middling report. Some people are very happy, some real ticked off but no reports of credit card theft. Hopefully, that's the case.

Now, I'm suspicious. I'd like to cancel but the software doesn't seem to allow for that. Any clues?

The only Select I ordered is the Reese (I have the others and frankly have Japanese versions of the Reese material). The other was Seven Steps to Heaven. If this stuff is illegal (off the back of a truck), that would be another story and I'd return it. What the heck, if they say that's not the real price, I'll say thank you very much and no thanks. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The worst I can be out of is $22 plus shipping. It's not that big of a risk. If there is a moral component here, then guilty. But we're all big boys.
-
I don't get it. Why would you pass. If they're stupid enough to offer that for $11 as well as Seven Steps to Heaven, by the way, why pass it up?
-
It's amazing how we can hijack an honest thread
-
Ron, My concern with your buying the Select is that it won't be good enough for you and that you'll want all the alternative takes, especially his sessions with Yanni
-
I've preordered this one.

Let's not start this debate again and raise ires. But here's a point about having the life experiences so you're not playing music as a history student: this may be right for jazz but what about an area of music like classical where people are history students since the original composers or performers are quite long gone. I don't think we'd necessarily impugn their musical interpretations. Life experiences no doubt influence what you play or how you react to certain situations (musically or not) but it's not necessarily the end all or be all and I think you'd agree with that.

While you're at it, get both and then compare

The trumpet player is Howard Magee. That's a great video- JJ is playing his ass off. Was what I said the actually case? Was Sonny really pissed off at that guy Howard? Something's going on, I'm not sure what. It definitely seems that Stitt doesn't think much of Magee's antics. Looks like he was very hurt and tried to cover it up with laughter. I'm assuming you're not familiar with Howard McGhee (not Magee) but Maggie is one of the more famous trumpeters from the 40s, who played with Bird and other. He suffered an eclipse in the 50s due to drugs but did make a rebound with some nice albums for Bethlehem among others. No collection is complete without some of Maggie's work.

Yes, I know, that's my little "loophole" in my delusion about my disease . (don't try try to understand the workings of an insane mind . It may drive you crazy as well ) Similarly, the Select series is my "loophole" in my refusal to buy Mosaics. You've got some exceptions in there that would make a lawyer proud. Since we're all addicts or we wouldn't be here, if Japan has material that you can't get here, you go to the source. If that's not the case with JRVGs and RVGs, then I understand. But for example with the OJCs and the Japanese reissues by Victor, there's no comparison, I'd still buy Japanese. Also why not buy Mosaic except for Selects. I don't get that. I understand some people's preference for individual albums but if it's material you can't get anywhere else, then that doesn't make sense to me.

I'd take option B. I don't have the Eldridge and I hear it's great. I have the Farlow and it is great. I don't really care for Johnny Smith. It doesn't move me and it lacks excitement for me. Tal is the total opposite for me. He really swings.

Why not order it from Mosaic. It's the same price and I'd rather give 'em the business. I don't get it.
