  1. I'm interested in getting this and from what I've heard so far, looks good. Any more reviews?
  2. I just saw that tonight. That's fuckin' unbelievable esp. since most of the music is otherwise available in cd.
  3. Here's Lon's (jazzbo) review from amazon of the JATP: This voluminous set reissues all the remaining recordings of the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts produced by Norman Granz during the period 1944 to 1949. There are previously issued and previously unissued performances here. Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Illinois Jacquett are heavily featured on tenor sax. Also making many appearances are the lesser known Howard McGhee and Kenny Kersey. Many other 'forties jazz stars are present, including Les Paul, Meade Lux Lewis, Charlie Parker, J. J. Johnson, Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge and Mel Powell. Sure the JATP became formulaic over time, but those performance captured here are exciting and stimulating. I especially enjoy the unissued sides by Lester Young here, and the many appearances on drums of his lesser-known brother, Lee Young. The sound is excellently remastered. A few selections are from very poor source material, but overall the sound is dynamic and vivid. The lengthy booklet is informative and fun. And have you ever seen a box set that came with a minature sidewalk marquee before? Do you think you will again?
  4. Ohh, I have to really differ about the quality about the JATP box. I think it's really good. You know, these weren't studio sessions like the NG Jam Sessions. And if you cut yourself off from these, you're missing an integral part of jazz history. There are many sessions that have been recorded that don't have pristine sound such as Art Pepper with the Sonny Clark Trio. Sound is terrible but some of the best music you'll ever hear. Ditto with the Bird Mosaic box. As Phil Schaap said a few years ago about poorly sounding sessions, the best filter is your ears.
  5. I'll die, thank you :rsmile:
  6. Time to start a NEW thread, to talk about the music. Somebody who actually has this thing, the honor and duty falls to you!!! As the number 1 Hill fan, I think that honor should fall to you plus I'm not that knowledgeable about Andrew as are you and others so I will leave it to you. Plus, I haven't had that much of a chance at work to listen. Some of the music on Disc 2 seems very contemplative however.
  7. I just received the Hill and the Pepper Selects! There's something good about living in Jersey (that's about it, I guess ) Yeah, who isn't henpecked. When my wife sees this, well, you know what she'll say!
  8. Rooster, They don't use USPS. Airborne or UPS is more like it. Since they presumably arrived on Thursday, they should have shipped out yesterday. I'm guessing that I'll get mine today if it goes UPS since it only takes one day from CT to Joisey. About your wife, where are priorities man? We may have to change your avatar

Fullheartedly agree with Clem. He said it better than I ever could.
  10. Any thoughts on those Decca Sessions?
  11. Received my notification also. Hope to receive it tomorrow. BTW, how much tea is there in China?
  12. No, I don't really care. I only feel bad for those little people who make their living at it. In the past, when I'd drive home at night and listen to the sports station, they might have a Rangers game and I'd groan. Now, without hockey it's nice not to have listen to that, except when they have on a Nets game.

FWIW, there's about 3 or 4 auctions going now in the UK for Basra at what seems reasonable prices. It's probably the RVG.
  14. I haven't heard of this particular scam but I have heard of the Nigerian scam.
  15. I'll be buying the new one today. The sound from what I remember seemed ok but not spectacular.
  16. It's gone. Woodymaggie (Pete) from the old board purchased it. I don't have this but I remember awhile ago Weizen commenting when he mentioned that he ordered the Vanguard Sessions something to the effect that he was happy to get these instead of from the old box.
  17. Here´s the JazzVines Yahoo group, Brad. Quite a few interesting shows now circulating... though Dan is right, and there´s a lot of free impro/avant-garde/whatever at this moment... http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/JazzVines/ Thanks EKE BBB and Dan, I sort of get it now. Ok, is this vine still open. If so, I'll check it out. If not, probably not.
  18. That would be this (courtesy of Jazzmatazz): Lou Donaldson - Say It Loud (Water 143) — remastered reissue of 1968 Blue Note album; with Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Ponder, Charles Earland and Leo Morris Jack McDuff - Who Knows What Tomorrow's Gonna Bring? (Water 144) — remastered reissue of 1970 Blue Note album; with Randy Brecker, Ola Dara, Dick Griffin, John Pierson, Ray Draper, Joe Beck, Paul Griffin, Tony Levin, Donald McDonald, Mike Mainieri
  19. I wrote to Mosaic asking what the status on shipping the Pepper was and they told me they were waiting for the Hill to come in and they said it just came in today and they're going to start shipping soon!
  20. I think the version on Morgan's DIZZY ATMOSPHERE came about a month earlier (Feb. '57) Close but no cigar
  21. I haven't checked ebay in a while but there are over 27,000 auctions going. I could remember when there were 5,000. I find it impossible to use it to browse anymore. It's only good if you have something specific in mind.
  22. Thanks for doing the research that I was too obviously lazy to do

Maybe a poor choice of his words but since he's getting royalties, what right does he have to object to the title or release. None, I believe. It should come our over his objections.
  24. I think Steinbrenner might object and he does blow his own horn and when the Yanks lose, he does get Blue but maybe Freddie Mitchell can cheer him up.
  25. Six Views of the Blues is obviously the blues, with some by his creation plus the St. Louis Blues. Cecil Payne is on this. Yeah, that took me by surprise. One of my favorite Jimmy Smith albums. This one doesn't get a whole lot of attention, circa 1958. Rescued from the vaults thank god.
