Brad, I think there are different types of "newbies". There's the type that are mostly looking for a group of individuals with whom they can enthuse about how cool all this shit is and little or nothing more. And I see nothing wrong woth that at all. But those are the types of newbies who are likely to not feel comfortable here. And yes, I do think that AAJ is a better "fit" for them. The type of newbie who's most likely to feel at home here is the type who has an active interest in learning about the music's history & heritage, as well as examining/debating the esthetic issues involved in same. I think that that's the "focus" of Organissimo musical discussions. That and BN/RVG fetishism. No intent to claim inferiority/superiority of either type of newbie or of either board. Just a recognition that "different strokes for different folks" is a good thing, not to be dismissed as an empty slogan, but to be recognized as a healthy choice for all concerned. Jim, As always you're right (or almost always ). I was referring to the first group that you mentioned. To me, you're not the Mayor (although that's ok too) but a wise older brother or even a father. As SNWolf said, avuncular.
-
First time I heard Jim referred to as an uncle. I think of him more as a wise older brother.

Like I said I wasn't trying to be nasty and applaud Jim's post. I think it expresses the philosophy here of experienced listeners and players. But if you're a newbie to jazz, I just don't think is the place. I think AAJ is that place. When I first joined the BNBB I was a newbie in all ways. After a few faux paux, I kept my mouth shut and basically read and listened until I had felt something I had to offer. The expression from my youth about being seen and not heard is still a useful one. I'm still in the learning mode (IMHO, you're learning till the day you die!), especially from people like Jim, Lon, Larry Kart, couw, and many others who are newbies to this Board but not to jazz.

the small market niche that jazz commands
Brad replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Actually, the clerk sounds like he was just being truthful. The local borders is not too bad. They usually get all the new stuff and sometimes they surprise me with what they have. It's not perfect but in this world of suburbia it's the best we can do. That what's the internet is for. -
Sandy, Today's the day that you changed many lives. Hope you get what you want. Enjoy!

Anyone know where to get Bethlehem reissues
Brad replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
There's a few on ebay although not that one. You might also try japan: hiroshi@earlyrecords.com -
Reading this mano a mano going on here, as I read some of SNWolf's threads, he's beginning to make some of Clem's posts very lucid.
-
Without trying to be nasty, if newbies are looking for an introductory thread or what is jazz threads, I don't think this is the place. Try AAJ.

Please tell me I spent my money wisely.

I'm interested in getting this and from what I've heard so far, looks good. Any more reviews? -
I just saw that tonight. That's fuckin' unbelievable esp. since most of the music is otherwise available in cd.

listening to the Complete Norman Granz Jam Session
Brad replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Here's Lon's (jazzbo) review from amazon of the JATP: This voluminous set reissues all the remaining recordings of the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts produced by Norman Granz during the period 1944 to 1949. There are previously issued and previously unissued performances here. Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Illinois Jacquett are heavily featured on tenor sax. Also making many appearances are the lesser known Howard McGhee and Kenny Kersey. Many other 'forties jazz stars are present, including Les Paul, Meade Lux Lewis, Charlie Parker, J. J. Johnson, Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge and Mel Powell. Sure the JATP became formulaic over time, but those performance captured here are exciting and stimulating. I especially enjoy the unissued sides by Lester Young here, and the many appearances on drums of his lesser-known brother, Lee Young. The sound is excellently remastered. A few selections are from very poor source material, but overall the sound is dynamic and vivid. The lengthy booklet is informative and fun. And have you ever seen a box set that came with a minature sidewalk marquee before? Do you think you will again? -
listening to the Complete Norman Granz Jam Session
Brad replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ohh, I have to really differ about the quality about the JATP box. I think it's really good. You know, these weren't studio sessions like the NG Jam Sessions. And if you cut yourself off from these, you're missing an integral part of jazz history. There are many sessions that have been recorded that don't have pristine sound such as Art Pepper with the Sonny Clark Trio. Sound is terrible but some of the best music you'll ever hear. Ditto with the Bird Mosaic box. As Phil Schaap said a few years ago about poorly sounding sessions, the best filter is your ears. -
I'll die, thank you :rsmile:

Andrew Hill Select now on the Mosaic Website!!!!!
Brad replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Time to start a NEW thread, to talk about the music. Somebody who actually has this thing, the honor and duty falls to you!!! As the number 1 Hill fan, I think that honor should fall to you plus I'm not that knowledgeable about Andrew as are you and others so I will leave it to you. Plus, I haven't had that much of a chance at work to listen. Some of the music on Disc 2 seems very contemplative however. -

I just received the Hill and the Pepper Selects! There's something good about living in Jersey (that's about it, I guess ) Yeah, who isn't henpecked. When my wife sees this, well, you know what she'll say! -

Rooster, They don't use USPS. Airborne or UPS is more like it. Since they presumably arrived on Thursday, they should have shipped out yesterday. I'm guessing that I'll get mine today if it goes UPS since it only takes one day from CT to Joisey. About your wife, where are priorities man? We may have to change your avatar -
Fullheartedly agree with Clem. He said it better than I ever could.

Any thoughts on those Decca Sessions?

Received my notification also. Hope to receive it tomorrow. BTW, how much tea is there in China? -
No, I don't really care. I only feel bad for those little people who make their living at it. In the past, when I'd drive home at night and listen to the sports station, they might have a Rangers game and I'd groan. Now, without hockey it's nice not to have listen to that, except when they have on a Nets game.

FWIW, there's about 3 or 4 auctions going now in the UK for Basra at what seems reasonable prices. It's probably the RVG.
-
I haven't heard of this particular scam but I have heard of the Nigerian scam.
-
I'll be buying the new one today. The sound from what I remember seemed ok but not spectacular.
-
It's gone. Woodymaggie (Pete) from the old board purchased it. I don't have this but I remember awhile ago Weizen commenting when he mentioned that he ordered the Vanguard Sessions something to the effect that he was happy to get these instead of from the old box.

Here´s the JazzVines Yahoo group, Brad. Quite a few interesting shows now circulating... though Dan is right, and there´s a lot of free impro/avant-garde/whatever at this moment... http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/JazzVines/ Thanks EKE BBB and Dan, I sort of get it now. Ok, is this vine still open. If so, I'll check it out. If not, probably not.
