  1. If you consider lp recorded onto cds bottlegs, then I have less than 5, othewise 0. I'm pretty scrupulous about that.
  2. Last couple of days I've been listening to the Arranger's Touch, 2 lp set of Gil Evans and Tadd Dameron. Great Gil but even better Tadd.
  3. Well, I just plunked down $20 for the Spain-Greece game. Fortunately there's a few games on FSW in the next few days and then I'm going to Europe on vacation so hopefully I'll catch the remainder there.
  4. Do you mean every two fer they ever did or just the recent ones. If the latter, besides the ones you mention, there's Harold Mabern, Junior Mance and Johnny Hammond Smith.
  5. You and me and everybody on this board, brother
  6. To the point I would say. No wasted words.
  7. No love for Sonny? This is one of my favorite Mosaics (next to the Mobley). I would rate this over the JJ although I like that one very much. But if the reason to buy is because it might go oop soon, yeah, it might go oop but you can always pick it up when it does. The music on the Sonny Mosaic shows him in his prime in a variety of settings and his Roulette work took place as he was also recording his Verve sides.
  8. Spain is my team (having lived in Madrid and Barcelona, and Real is also my team but don't get me started on that subject) and I saw Saturday's game and like you wasn't happy with what I saw. They had incredible energy in the first 15 minutes or so but couldn't get anything close to a good shot. The passing seemed to be off. The way they were playing they should have won 4-0. The Russians were very inexperienced so they're lucky. I don't think they'll be able to get away with that with the Greeks so let's hope they're a little better. Dmitry, I've checked and the Spanish stations don't have it. Except for a few games on Fox Sports World, it costs almost $20 a game. I think FSW will have the quarters, semis and final on tape delay, but that's it.
  9. The Granz Jelly, I mean Jam, Sessions will be coming out on October 5.
  10. A couple of years ago, I had some dealings with a jazz fan in Canada named John Tracey who is an expert on Basie (his handle is basie nut) and has everything issued by him and probably a lot of what's been written about him. At my suggestion, he joined the old BNBB and participated in some Basie threads but didn't join this Board, to my knowledge. If you want his email, please send me a pm.
  11. Yesterday's game was a heartbreaker. Too lose to France in the last couple of minutes. I'm not sure England can come back. Shades of Man U - Bayern Munich of a few years ago.
  12. I've listened to most of it and so far it's ok. It seems to lack the bite or drive of his late 50s/early 60s Messengers although I think John Hicks stands out.
  13. You're wrong about nobody in the jazz world noticing. WKCR, which is on the web at www.wkcr.org had extensive coverage of Fats Waller and I'm sure they're planning something about the Count. They also have a Coleman Hawkins birthday broadcast every year.
  14. I can't see that they're making that much on shipping. A six cd set is about $7 or so. With box, bubble wrap and UPS (even though they're probably getting a discount), I can't see them making more than $2 a box. That's not that much. Plus free shipping isn't that much of an incentive. 20 percent would be a heck of a lot nicer.
  15. I, for one, must also progress ignorance about it being his first date AND I've got the darn box. I'll have to go back tonight and pull it out and listen to it again, having Larry's description rambling through my head.
  16. I never saw it. DAMN!
  17. I'm pickin this up tomorrow so I'll let y'all know. Never heard this before but heck Mogie and Blakey gotta be worth it.
  18. No way, the new Mosaic king must be wesbed
  19. Chris, have you ever considered putting these out in a book of photos. It'd be tremendous and I, for one, would buy it.
  20. Man, that's screwed up. Maybe I should consider selling mine.
  21. I'd say the Verve stuff is pretty important, just as the Blue Note stuff. However, the BN material is crisper, more incisive, whereas Bud loses his way sometimes in the Verve material. I'd try to pick up the RVGs. Good sound and also get Bud Powell Plays, originally issued by Roost by Teddy Reig, but then reissued on Roulette. For some earlier Bud, you may want to check out the Bebop Boys. This should be available in many different versions from Savoy. This stuff really cooks. There's also a recent reissue by Fantasy of material recorded by Bud's confidant, Francis Paudras, which came out originally on Mythic Sound. The Mythic Sound material is starting to slowly see the light through Fantasy. There's a couple of good cds on RCA that Bud did in the middle 50s. Might fine stuff.
  22. Just when I think things are coolin down, I see a reference to the "One Sound". Is this supposed to be some sort of slap at the Sounds or because Dan is the GHF. I don't see what's wrong with liking the Sounds (there's a lot of fans out there including me) or for Dan being a huge Sounds fan. There's a lot of people who happen to love a group or an artist. I don't see anybody jumping on Rooster for loving Andrew Hill, probably more than Dan loves Gene Harris. So can we please stop with this nonsense, for chrissake.
  23. This has gone on long enough. Without getting into who's right or who's wrong, I think two of our senior members and contributors need to tone this down.
