  1. Great story. Shows the extent to which companies protect their IP.
  2. I find it slightly annoying if you buy a new pressing and it has problems. I’m much more forgiving with used vinyl because, hey, it’s used and you don’t expect perfection, not to mention less expensive; new TPs are $40.
  3. I’m retired now but the day our company went casual was the last day I wore one (except for certain occasions). Still, there’s something about it when you wear one with a nice suit.
  4. The copyright on Mickey will end in 2024 but not on all creations or designs of Mickey, just on the way he appeared in Steamboat Willie and The Galloping Gaucho. Copyrights created by Disney on other designs will still be in effect. In addition, the use of the words Mickey Mouse once the design is in the public domain will be complicated by Disney’s trademarks in the words. As long as you are using a TM, it’s perpetual. It won’t be as easy to use the design as it may appear.
  5. Reading this for a book club. It’s better than I expected. From what I’ve read it’s considered a classic. He was the first person to sail solo around the world.
  6. I think I’ve returned one and the replacement was worse than the first one so I kept it.
  7. I’m also active on SH and have read these posts. I think people are being particular in some cases. In other cases, such as the Kind of Blue UHQR, they are not. Generally, I have hold off in purchasing these Classics, one because I don’t want to duplicate what I have in cd but also due to quality complaints. A couple of months ago I purchased the Nichols and, mistakenly, only listened to it yesterday. It has a few pops and some distortion. Not the end of the world, just slightly annoying.
  8. Their vinyl is very expensive— they want $100 for the Blakey. Ultimately, I decided I didn’t need them or wish to spend the money on another concert.
  9. Sorry to hear that.
  10. I have this one too and just cracked it open.
  11. The Yankees seem to make an art form of retiring numbers. By contrast, the Cardinals have retired 14 or 15, a lot, but not as many as NY. Those games tend to sell out, not that I’d suggest there’s any connection!
  12. It’s hard to separate which of the two versions I prefer but I lean towards the Cilia Black one.
  13. That’s good negotiating. If I start out at a high price, it’s now on the table. It’s a floor I can’t go below so I start out low knowing I have to go up at some point. I’m sure MLB has a number in mind. If I was negotiating a price for a product I would not start out at the number I wanted to get to but give myself wiggle room so that I could eventually agree to a number closer to where I wanted to end up all along.
  14. I used to negotiate contracts for a living and what you suggest is not negotiating. When someone offers .50 and you come back with 2.00 you’ve established your ceiling. If you go back the next day and say it’s not 2 but 3, that’s negotiating in bad faith. I’ve had that happen to me and it almost led to the collapse of the contract. Now, there’s nothing that says you can’t do that because until a contract is signed, theoretically you can ask for everything. However, don’t expect it to go over well.
  15. And they’re all a bunch of dicks.
  16. It’s going to be a long time before we see baseball until both sides get serious. Based upon my experience, they need to do is engage in round the clock negotiating. That’s the only way a deal gets done. Piecemeal negotiating sessions are unproductive.
  17. Remembrance by Charles McPherson in JazzTimes. Charles McPherson Remembers Barry Harris
  18. Years ago I had a small O Scale layout, that a friend and I built. A lot of fun but takes up a lot of room. Had many Lionel and MTH locos. Great stuff. Went to a few train shows. A lot of fun.
  19. If it’s O Scale, he must have a big basement.
  20. FWIW, it didn’t receive a good review in the NYT. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/15/movies/oscar-peterson-black-white-review.html
