  1. Just finished reading. It’s an excellent exposition of the different bombing strategies in WW II, written in a very conversational manner. Fascinating book. Currently reading Le Carre’s last book.
  2. Excellent. It was intended as a send up of the spy establishment but received mixed reviews. However, over time, it’s become more appreciated. The book that follows this one, A Small Town in Germany, is also good. It takes places in Bonn (the then capital of West Germany) as the UK seeks admission in the mid 60s to the EC.

  4. Best of luck Allen. Thoughts are with you.
  5. Two different sessions. One in a big band session, one with Oliver Nelson, and one with her trio, which I prefer.
  6. If you want to see a newly restored doc about Bix for free, see this article in JazzWax. However, you only have until tomorrow Documentary: Bix Beiderbecke Here’s an interview by Marc Myers with the filmmaker, Brigitte Berman. Brigitte Berman on Bix Beiderbecke
  7. From what I have read Liu’s assassination was a result of his bio of Chiang, not the Seagrave book, which was very good.
  8. I’ve been to a mall one in the last two years and that was only to use the bathroom a few weeks ago. It was pretty quiet.
  9. Dr. B3 The Soul of the Music From what I can tell this is a documentary still being made.
  10. The Dr. moniker was sort of like his saying I’m a doctor in bringing music to people. Here’s an article about him and the turban from an Indian arts site. The Self-Styled Sikh Legend Of Acid Jazz
  11. His latest (and I assume last) album, Breathe, was a wonder. RIP.
  12. I received my set (cd) a few weeks ago and have been slowly going through it. Disc 6, in my opinion, is the best so far, with Neophilia, Nommo, Peyote and Absolutions. This is the third and fourth sets on Saturday, July 10 and Mabern is just killing it. Outstanding.
  13. I think it might have been in the late 90s but he broke down and analyzed Slim’s Jam in minute detail. I think he did this over two or three shows, if my memory is correct. It was fascinating and absorbing. Maybe it was too minute but I didn’t think so; I learned a lot from him.
