Last night before I went to bed I heard on WBGO the host playing apparently a radio transmission of a concert/session at the Empire Ballroom in 1949. They were apparently playing an extended version of Take the A Train and C-Jam Blues, plus Passsion Flower. Take the A Train had extended solos from Ray Nance, Al Killian and Jimmy Hamilton, and others and each solo was annnounced in advance by an announcer whose last name I think was Smith. Well, I had to go to bed so I never got to hear the end of this. Does anyone know what cd or cd collection this may be from. Thanks.

That's a crazy price for the Basie Studio set. That's the kind of price I'd expect to see for the Nat King Cole. I have the Live Set and I paid nowhere close to that. I would have liked to buy this set but bit by bit the music on this set is being released. So, I'll wait.

I think Dan's last quote summarizes it quite as does this quote from couw: "But think of the costs, think of what you ask of your public, and think of the expectations you might put on others." We don't want to lose the audience and I find one cd in length to be just right. As far as what should be in, leave it to the compiler is probably the best advice we can give. This is a little bactrack from what I said yesterday but there'll never be agreement as to what is or isn't "jazz". I also don't think this is just "blahblahblah" but issues that should be discussed among us from time to time.

Y'all probably no opinion on this; I think there should be a limit. To say that compilers should take listeners into account is desirable but very open ended. I'm not sure how that would be done. Also, this poll will only be meaningful, I believe, if we only get around 30 or so total votes.

I think I saw it a couple of months ago on Ebay for around $150 or so. If you're interested I can get you a xerox of the book that I got from Mosaic.

All year? Man, the year just got started . They're still tme. I, too, have gotten away from ebay quite a bit. Just don't have the time and they're just too many postings.

There's a review in tomorrow's NYT by Ben Ratliff that isn't terribly complimentary. I read it this morning and perhaps someone can post it tomorrow.

I really think it's a good idea, Dan. I think focusing on one disc and giving it repeated listens would help the discussion. I find a double disc also gets a little overwhelming. I also think it forces the person to really focus on what he or she really wants to get across to the listeners.

I would like to get a good cd player that also has a clockradio for the bedside. Any help or suggestions? Is Bose the place to look? Thanks.

On the subject of what goes, I think we could use more discussion. Since this is a jazz board I think it should be jazz or jazz related. I know others may disagree but just because it influenced jazz doesn't mean it's "jazz", which I guess is also an open question. We should leave it the person doing the disc but I feel it must have some reasonable relationship to jazz. Another point is how many discs. I guess we can leave this the person doing it but frankly my preference is just one. I know that we all have a lot to listen to and I'd like to confine it to one. At least mine will be one. And, yes, I know this has been discussed before.

My view of these types of radio recordings is that we're extremely lucky that somebody decided to record them off the air and that they still exist in as good a condition as they do.

That's very hard list to choose from. I have to single out Lem Winchester, Milt and Bobby Hutcherson, whom I've gotten to like more lately: he seems to crop up everywhere! But I like Johnny Lyttle too. In the end I voted for Lem; he needs some recognition. Winchester Special is a must buy and just a fantastic album.

I finally got a chance to listen to both discs and here goes. Disc 1 1 - Great bop era type band. I know I have this but I can't identify it. However, I think it could be from one of those Gene Norman Presents discs. 2 - Don't know but really like the trumpet. Sax didn't bowl me over although he's solid. 3 - Nice but it only deserves mentions because of the vibes, for which I'm a sucker. Nice vibes. Bobby Hutcherson? No idea really. 4 - Nothing I like here. 5 - Don't know. 6 - Very mellow. Don't know otherwise. 7 - Don't know. Liked the sax. 8 - Found this to be the most interesting cut here. Great coversation going on between sax and trumpet. Worthy of several listens. 9 - Ellington and Hodges. Unmistakeable. Nice choice. 10 - Who else? 11 - No idea but except for guitar didn't move me. Disc 2 - Except for track 1, which must be Gil Evans (sounded like something out of Concierto de Aranjuez), I found the rest of the disc disappointing. Nothing I really liked there or would want to listen to again. Sorry, Randy. Randy, great job (even if I didn't like everything). Great cross-section of your interests. Thank you once again.

I checked the TOCJ I have of this date and Patton is not listed. I didn't listen to it so I'm not sure why he's not listed.

I'd have to agree with Lon. You can't beat the Groove's price in this case. Cds from Japan have been running (without postage) between $20 and $21 lately.
