    Happy Birthday Dex!

Did he have any view about Miles that he could pass on to John?
  2. Calling Dan Gould
  3. I don't know about Evan but I am. Send me back in a time machine
  4. Today is Dexter Gordon's birthday. His greatness and contributions don't need to be stated. They speak for themselves. So, all Dexheads report in! I'll be spinning some Dex discs today and already started by listening to some of his work with Mr. B. Happy Birthday Dex! and thanks.
  5. Another alternative is to wire the money but that might cost you around $25 or so.
  6. I'm a Mosaic addict and I really don't buy this remastering controversy. I'm grateful if things previously unavailable on cd are now available. Mosaic has put out things that you wouldn't be able to get on cd. Obviously, as others have noted, that's changing. Let's look at the Stitt set. Those masters were considered lost until discovered in London, I believe. So you wouldn't have seen those coming out on cd anytime soon. When I first became interested in jazz, I didn't know TOCJ from 24 bit. I bought the Mobley and as far as I knew those recordings were unavailable. I know better now. Another example is the HRS Sessions. Unless you have the 78s, you wouldn't have been able to listen to one of the great sets. So there's Reason Number One. Number Two, those Mosaic books are great. They usually have a great bio of the artist and then a great analysis of the music that even a non-musician can follow. Would I pick up a Mosaic if I had the recordings in TOCJ or whatever. No. I have the Chamber recordings so I haven't picked up that select. But I only had Katanga on the Amy Select so I've got that now. The sound is real fine. And I sold Katanga on Ebay. The best thing about the Selects is how the Pacific catalogue is seeing some light. So I can't think of a reason not to buy the Mosaics or the Select unless you already have the music.
  7. I have purchased a couple of things from them and they are very slow in shipping. They have some nice things at reasonable prices but man they are real slow. I bought Hamp and Getz earlier this month and it took almost the whole month to get it. They claimed that theydidn't know I had paid them by paypal. It took them almost 2 weeks to realize this and they wouldn't have unless I had bugged them about it. There is a reason why they have a lot of negatives and a lot of neutral feedback. So, if you're tempted, be prepared to be patient. They'd have to trot out something really good for me to buy from them again.
  8. The Mobley set, still the best IMHO.
  9. Except for Lon, you guys are all wet!
  10. I use to use these to pay Hiroshi and you can only get them in Dollars which was fine with Hiroshi. The USPS is not going to issue them in Yen. This was the only kind of m.o. he could use without incurring large fees. This ought to work with your seller. As an alternative, there's always paypal which pays in Yen. However, you might have to pay the fees.
  11. I agree with Jim. I'm gone. They don't like jazz too much and they believe I spend way too much (I do, but so what, it's my hobby, and they understand that).
  12. Thanks for the link. I have to agree with him regarding Deep, a person in need of help. But like most of us I don't agree with his position on not posting.
  13. Since we're in this vein, where is PD? He seems to have gone for a very long time and in my brief soujourns to AAJ, I don't see him there either. Any info?
  14. I can't believe this baby has gone through so many owners. It's a great cd.
  15. New or used, it doesn't matter to me. A good part of my collection comes from ebay so that's a valuable source. I don't understand the idea of not wanting a disc that someone's touched before. You put a new jewel case on it, with a protective sleeve and it looks like new. No one could tell the difference. If it's new, I'll probably buy it in the store or line. If it's not so new or somebody mentions it, I'll probably look at ebay first and then check elsewhere. Since we have a variety of sources available to us, I say use them all.
  16. Hey soul station, I just got an email from the Music Resource for the new RVGs and it says that Patton is on the tambourine. So they're right. Maybe he wasn't on the liner notes for contractual reasons.
  17. Whatdya got. Looking for something in the VICJs. I just can't take this suffering any longer from way down yonder in the Nation's capital.
  18. Well, I wanted weizy to get the advantage, especially since you were selling him 5 sealed copies of Trompeta Trocatta.
  19. I picked this up but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.
  20. I hate to admit this but I picked up the Owens Bebop book a while ago and never got a chance to read this. What's your views on this?
  21. Sick maybe but "let he who is without sin....", I think you get the idea
  22. Here I am, looking at the members who are on line list, feverishly scanning for grey's name, anxiously waiting to see if he's posting more Japanese cds that I have to spend my money one, that I just have to HAVE, so anxious that my fingers are getting numb waiting to hit that PM button with the message "I'll take 'em all" and, lo and behold, he's taking the day off. I'm thinking of doing a seance, to get in touch with grey's mind so I can get a hint, a clue, an inkling of when he'll post again and drive us all to hit that pm button. Ahhh, the agony and when he replies in the affirmative, ahhhhh the ecstasy
  23. These are coming out tomorrow, courtesy of BN/Capitol: Cannonball Adderley-Ernie Andrews - Live Session Stan Kenton - Back to Balboa Benny Carter - Sax a la Carter Johnny Smith - Moonlight in Vermont George Shearing Quintet with Nancy Wilson - The Swinging's Mutual I'd like to pick up the Johnny Smith (since I don't anticipate getting the Mosaic for awhile) but I don't know the others. Any comments?
  24. I saw a very low priced JSP Charlie Christian set recently. Is that one worth picking up or if I have the recent box that came out, should I skip the JSP box?
  25. I thought Dr. Freud was into penis envy. Now I see he's moved a little higher, different sex, however.
