  1. If Deep has been banned, how is it that his name appears on the list of people looking at this thread?
  2. Here's another vote the Blue Hour. Kudos to BN for putting out the Complete set. Also, a big yes vote for Queen of the Organ. Awesome! Other favorites of mine are Stan the Man on Time/Bainbridge (little hard to find, although it's probably still available in Japan) and Dearly Beloved and Never Let Me Go, also on BN.
  3. I've pretty much ignored his thread early in the game. There were a few good stories mixed in with the nonsense, but few at that. I'm glad he's been banned. In my mind, I can never associate his discs with the persona that's been on various boards .
  4. As mentioned their service is the best. They're the gold standard as far as I'm concerned. Ornette, if you'd like I'd be willing to give them a call for you if you pm me with the particulars, if you don't get a response soon.
  5. Catesta, are you sure about that ?
  6. I have the Stash version of Red Norvo's Fabulous Jam Session which IMHO is one of the seminal sessions in the history of the music up to that time. Having the bad boys of bebop record with an established figure such as Red Norvo gave them a very strong air of legitimacy that they'd not had. It took me a very long time to find this disc. I first heard it on Phil Schaap's Bird show and was transfixed. It took me over a year to get it. Now, it's generally available on the combined Savoy - Dial box. An interesting sidenote to some of the discussion about Jay McShann is Bird's alto partner, John Jackson, who was rumored to be better than Bird and sounded just like him but never got the attention that Bird did. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find out that much information about him and google searches haven't helped at all. If anyone has any leads, please post them.
  7. I haven't checked the new rule at AAJ but how do we define what is an "active board member"? An improvement in the existing rule, but not yet perfect.
  8. These are all available domestically in a set. Fantasy put out a set a few years ago of his complete Prestige years. This is a very nice set. It's a wonder to me that this set doesn't get more attention.
  9. My feeling on this question is that we're trying to predict how a couple of entrepeneurs from the 50-60s would act in the late 90s and early 21st century. Conditions were quite different then than now (other than jazz being not the popular form of music at both times). It can be like mixing apples and oranges. We know how they'd operate then, but not really now (with any certainty). Chris, who was experienced in that field, is probably right, they wouldn't be happy but it's really hard to know. On the other hand, BN was a small label then so would she have even gone to them. I doubt it. Since BN is now part of a large corporation, it's probably a different story.
  10. David, It was Basie at Newport, which came out last week as a VME. See this thread.
  11. Yeah, how about one of those JATP sessions or when Bird was coming up with Jay McShann. That'd be fun. Or when he played at the Onyx Club. Or how about the Massey Hall Gig. That would be sublime
  12. I've reserved Masterpieces and Uptown at my local Borders. I bought the newest Basie disc there last week and they gave me a 10% off coupon on future purchases, plus another 15% if I answered some questions on the phone about their store, etc., so that's 25% off I'm going to be getting later this week.
  13. I don't see how this can be good for the game. But you can't blame Steinbrenner for taking advantage of the rules as they are. The problem is with the game at present and that this could be allowed to happen. For this, you have to blame the present stewards of the game: the owners and the player's union. This could never happen in the NFL or NBA, which are on a much sounder footing right now. You have to be happy if you're a Yankee fan but generally sad if you love this greatest of games.
  14. I saw that too was and pissed. It's not like they're millions of jazz fans down there knocking doors down to get to these sites. It's a very small community and I would like to think we're all one family. Well, as far as Assholes About Jazz are concerned, apparently not. So F*** them.
  15. Did you see the stupid attitude AAJ is taking about not posting Organissimo technical problems on their site. They said go to Jazz Corner. What bunch of idiots. I thought we were all big family here. F*** them!
  16. I was just trying to send a PM and got that the error message we used to get awhile ago. Hope the PM went through.
  17. I think you have to know going in that the sound quality is not good but I had no trouble getting past that. There's a lot of significant jazz out there that's not good quality. At some point you get past that and let your ears be the filter. I've only been listening to jazz for six years so to have to be a thirty year listener doesn't make sense although I don't really think you meant that literally. Anyway, this is a must set for me. "Enough Bird?" That's impossible. When you're talking about one of the three most influential figures in our music, you can never have enough Bird.
  18. All snide remarks aside, there is some wonderful music here, especially the gigs at the Three Deuces, which is in pretty good sound, and the Onyx Club. The music from those sessions is not limited to Bird's solos and is pretty darn good. If you're not a Bird-maniac and have some concerns about the sounds, there's some pretty nice cds from Uptown that are good: Bird in Boston and Bird in Montreal. I really like the Boston one. There is of course, as mentioned, the live Savoy discs, which are very good, esp. Bird's rendition of White Christmas. You've never heard White Christmas until you've heard Bird do it. There's also the Birdland material too.
  19. I'm not. I want a whole mouthful:g
  20. Is the Phiolology set still available. I don't believe so. Regarding the Benedetti set, it depends on how much of a fan you are. I think it's great but I'm a big Bird fan. If you're not, you may want to stay away. It's somewhat of a controversial box, in that respect.
  21. Either that was a subtle hint, or someone just whacked me between the antlers with a 2X4... Wouldn't they need a ladder to get up there to do it? . I hear Moose (or is that meese, and not Edwin) are pretty tall .
  22. There's a couple of those Left Bank cds: LTD and XXL. They're ok. I assume they're not including the Resurgence of Dexter, which was on Jazzland, although tha's now a Fantasy label.
  23. As couw and Hans have noted, why are we even bothering to discuss the whys and wherefores of the BNBB again. It's gone and replace something ten times (at least) better. I'm not trying to create further controversy (although it may seem that way) but I don't understand why Kevin has re-raised the issue. Is it because he's mad that the BNBB, to which he had many connections, is gone and replaced by something better (there I go again, raising controversy). Let's accept and nurture what we have here and not worry about what was and what won't be with BNE. If that makes me a Sangrey sycophant, I gladly accept the nomination .
  24. Ubu, Here's the AMG page for Blues from Kansas City and the AMG page for Complete Birth of the Bebop. I didn't know or think the Spotlite was oop. I bought this a few years ago directly from Tony Williams who owns Spotlite, plus the other Spotlites that I own on Dial: Dodo Marmarosa, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Berman. He was a delight to talk to. Perhaps they still have copies. Here's the track listing: I Found a New Baby Body and Soul Moten Swing Coquette Lady be Good Blues Honeysuckle Rose Cherokee You Say Forward, I'll March Lonely Boy Blues Vine Street Boogie Jump the Blues One O'Clock Jump (theme) Bottle It Sweet Georgia Brown Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams One O'Clock Jump Theme.
  25. To confuse things a little more, there's this from Verve, Jay McShann - Blues from Kansas City - Decca (GRD-614), which is likewise fantastic. I'll try to post tracks from these two cds (if I can) later tonight. I'm not familiar with that Early Bird Cd but there is one from Stash that I have called Charlie Parker - The Complete “Birth of the Bebop” - Stash 535.
