I'm interested. What are you looking for in the terms of a trade? -
What's in the Mosaic pipeline?
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That news about the Herman set is very exciting indeed: Ralph Burns, what an incredible arranger. Sonny Berman, ay! my mouth is watering indeed. For those who don't know him, what a treat and what a great trumpeter. Had drugs not got him, he'd be mentioned in the same breath with all the greats. That Keynote LP box is indeed incredible. The liner notes are equally amazing and this is a label deserving of special treatment. Mercury in Japan put out a few cds a while ago. If you can find that, you'll get a sense of what it's all about. Mighty special stuff. Let's hope the First Herd material and the Keynote material don't come out near the same time or I'll be a pretty poor man indeed. -
We are a very puritanical nation. That arises from the Puritan ethic that was so instrumental in setting up this country. I didn't see it (I never watch halftime shows; they're crap anyway) but I wouldn't have minded seeing it. I don't think I would have wanted my son to see it, though. But this is what you expect from NFL football. It's Americana at it's best: crass, commercial, etc. The game is fun to watch, but it comes with a lot of commercialism and that's why you get these insipid halftime shows. The NFL may be "offended" but that what's you get in bed with MTV and big business.

I see what you mean. I'd have to check tonight. I know AMG is fallible. Still, I wonder why he's not listed.
-
Why would you think he's on that. AMG doesn't list him and I don't remember him being on there. I don't the answer but is a double organist set up common?
-
Here's another one. Do you want me to email my address?

Thank god we're back and thank god or B-3er for this Board!!!

In my view, this is the best Select to come out. Of everything on this set, I really love Tippin on Through, which was recorded at the Lighthouse. Just fantastic live music. There is just no way you can go wrong if you buy this set. Just no possible way.

Rooster, back in the saddle again!! <smile>

Rooster, I'll be thinking about you and you have a lot of people here pulling for your mom and your family. Brad -
This DVD is back in stock at Dusty Groove. I've ordered my copy and it will hopefully be shipping today.

That would make no commercial sense. It's got to be a mistake. What would they do with all those Conns they made. Throw them out? Who would buy one at $15 plus when you could get a RVG for $10 or so. No, it's not logical. Some other Rivers must be coming out. Maybe it's a remaster of Johnny Rivers' Secret Agent Man .

Bob Brookmeyer & Bud Shank/Bob Cooper

Mine just arrived. Unfortunately, I'm travelling so I'll have to wait until Saturday to listen to it . -
Mine's on order and I'm just salivating, waiting to hear it. Hopefully, early next week.

I loved Tommy's stuff so I'd give it thumbs up. Although I haven't listened to this one in a while, I dig all his stuff. It's too bad he didn't record more.

Speaking of Parcells and why he is considered a great coach, a couple of years ago Imus told a story on the air that when he was in the hospital with a collapsed lung, Parcells came to visit him and give a pep talk. Imus said that after that visit and the motivational talk he got, he could see why Parcells was a great coach. There was more to it than that but when he relayed the story on the air I found it fascinating.

What's in the Mosaic pipeline?
Brad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Totally agree Larry. That's a very poor choice of words. If Verve will only give them certain "select" material, I hope that it's a little different than what came out on cd. However, since I think few people probably have that material that wouldn't be a bad anyway. This would just show how great this material is. -
So ends one of the most unique threads I've ever had the pleasure to read. Not with a bang but a whimper. Too bad.

Blue Mitchell Mosaic Set Or Electric Bill
Brad replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I say go for the bill. Without the juice, you can't live. Jazz is fun and to many our hobby but comes secondary to the basic necessities. Hopefully, Blue won't sell out before you pay the bill. -

I like the Farlow box. That sounds exciting but expensive. I also share Larry Kart's concerns about the Woody Herman but we'll have to see. However, I am puzzled by the Keynote references. To issue this material as several Selects wouldn't do that material justice. This is a set that cries out for the full Mosaic treatment. I understand that it can't be done as one Mosaic but probably several Mosaics, similar to the Commodores (which were 3 boxes). If it came out this way, this will be the best Mosaic ever. This set deserves an exhaustive book written by experts. I suppose if worse comes to worse they could use the book that accompanied the LP Box. -
I assume that since the article said that she is Ravi Shankar's daughter and doesn't like to talk about it, that it must be true. I thought it was amusing that the article referred to Blue Note as a boutique label. I was thinking of writing a letter to the Editor saying "Idiots! BN was one of the preeminent jazz labels of the 50s and 60s."
-
As an example of what Dan is talking about, if you take a look at the Hank Mobley box, Mosaic choose his entire output from the 50s for Blue Note. It's got everything in there, nothing less. Mosaic goes in for the complete approach on their full size boxes. That is how the Selects differ. They're not going for the complete approach. Plus, the booklet is just the original liner notes, unless there's an unissued session, in which case, Michael Cuscuna may write something about the session. In addition, he usually writes a brief postscript about the session.

Has your cd player been exposed to any kind of moisture or different kind of weather changes. I know with the portable players that can sometime happen.

Marcus, These are all great. I really love them, especially the Pepper Adams cd. That is just fantastic Pepper. I believe there's also a Stan Levey one that's very good. And so is the Conde Candoli. If you can get them all. BTW, there happens to be a copy of the Stan Levey cd on Ebay right now.
-
I guess it depends how much you love Grant. But if you do (and I do), this is a must pickup, as is all of his BN output (at least before the late 60s). Ben Dixon on drum, Ben Tucker on bass, how could you go wrong?

I have the Fresh Sounds Cd and haven't had time to compare that with the Blue Note (call me lazy or busy ). Is there anything on the Blue Note that's not on the Fresh Sounds Cd. Is the Blue Note claim "of first time anywhere" for that particular session correct?
