  1. I assume that since the article said that she is Ravi Shankar's daughter and doesn't like to talk about it, that it must be true. I thought it was amusing that the article referred to Blue Note as a boutique label. I was thinking of writing a letter to the Editor saying "Idiots! BN was one of the preeminent jazz labels of the 50s and 60s."
  2. As an example of what Dan is talking about, if you take a look at the Hank Mobley box, Mosaic choose his entire output from the 50s for Blue Note. It's got everything in there, nothing less. Mosaic goes in for the complete approach on their full size boxes. That is how the Selects differ. They're not going for the complete approach. Plus, the booklet is just the original liner notes, unless there's an unissued session, in which case, Michael Cuscuna may write something about the session. In addition, he usually writes a brief postscript about the session.
  3. Has your cd player been exposed to any kind of moisture or different kind of weather changes. I know with the portable players that can sometime happen.
  4. Marcus, These are all great. I really love them, especially the Pepper Adams cd. That is just fantastic Pepper. I believe there's also a Stan Levey one that's very good. And so is the Conde Candoli. If you can get them all. BTW, there happens to be a copy of the Stan Levey cd on Ebay right now.
  5. I guess it depends how much you love Grant. But if you do (and I do), this is a must pickup, as is all of his BN output (at least before the late 60s). Ben Dixon on drum, Ben Tucker on bass, how could you go wrong?
  6. I have the Fresh Sounds Cd and haven't had time to compare that with the Blue Note (call me lazy or busy ). Is there anything on the Blue Note that's not on the Fresh Sounds Cd. Is the Blue Note claim "of first time anywhere" for that particular session correct?
  7. Since I have most of these in JRVG or TOCJ, I'll probably pass. The one I don't is the Duke Pearson (which I think is a Conn; not totally sure) but it sounds fine to me so I'll probably pass on all of these.
  8. According to Mosaic, they're receiving these today and will start shipping today also.
  9. It's a little bit of what Jim and John said. He was a great motivator, fearless and inspired fear and loyalty in ohters. If Lombardi said it, it must be true. He, from what I remember, didn't have much respect for less than perfect execution and having said all that, he was loved by his players. I don't know if you remember that photo of Jerry Kramer looking up at him as they carried him off the field after one of his super bowl victories. That is love and respect.
  10. Deus, happy birthday. Although, one wonders how does a deus have a birthday if he's been around since the beginning of time .

One cd which hasn't been mentioned, which I think is quite nice, although not as much a favorite for me, is Moods. It's a Japanese issue that I picked up. I can't really tell when it was recorded but since it has Jacky Terrason on it, it must be more recent than others.
  12. I was unfamiliar with this until now but now it's on my buy list. From the column posted by Roger, I'm really looking forward to this.

    Prez is here!

As Jim notes this is out of stock again so I have followed his advise and asked for notification when they get it back in stock. I'm sorry I missed this thread earlier.
  14. That Manne CD is not bad. Just worth getting for Richie Kamuca. Also, wasn't there another JATP cd of Gerry Mulligan that Fantasy released a couple of years ago? Here's the link to the Mulligan Cd.

    Sir Roland Hanna

I heard some of his solo playing recently on WKCR and was very impressed. Really nice.
  16. There's a few more that have just come out in Japan. See the attached thread, although a couple were cancelled, like the Herbie Harper.

    Jordu

Or maybe he just needed a title for a song and figured it'd be a catchy phrase
  18. I received a response from Michael. Nothing imminent. He's still trying to figure out what to do. I certainly wouldn't look for this anytime soon.
  19. I know my copy of Blowin' in from Chicago was white. Maybe they were trying to replicate the TOCJ series, which are in white. Frankly, I like the white myself. It stands out from the normal grey/black. But maybe it was cheaper to go with the grey/black.
  20. Well, it's too bad we can't read their stuff. There's a thread involving Buddy DeFranco that's 6 pages long. There has to be some good shit in there. I think you need a special browser for japanese/chinese characters.
  21. Since the information that Dan posted came out, there's been nothing new to report that I've heard of anyway. However, I think it's time to send an email to Michael about it . I'll report back. BTW, if anything came out, it would have to be a Select. A Mosaic would be too large and Michael doesn't believe there's enough of a market out there for them.
  22. As a follow up, I took a brief look at the web and unfortunately couldn't find a discography for JATP.
  23. Good suggestion from Brownie. I wanted to respond but it's a little hard. There's a bunch of stuff listed on AMG but I'm not sure how through it will be for your purposes. Plus, let's not forget that Norman Granz kept at least one JATP for himself (might there be others?) not owned by Verve. I only have one JATP from the 50s (and it's not on Verve); it's a concert in Japan. It wasn't as dynamic as the 40s stuff unfortunately.
  24. I, too, must join with Catesta. I only got a chance to seriously listen to this disc last night so I'm a little to late to post but I can tell you I wouldn't have gotten any of these anyway. The ones I particularly liked were Max Roach's Parisian Sketches, Elvin's Polycurrents (I did recognize Pepper and was impressed with the tenors; I may have to consider getting this or the Mosaic some day), Lucky Thompson (embarrasingly, I have this and will be listening to it again tonight), Slide Hampton, Ear of the Behearer was not bad (impressed with Dewey), Pee Wee (another embarrasment that I have) and Art Pepper, very moving solo. The others did really nothing for me. Must pickups for me are the Art Pepper, Slide Hampton and Max Roach's Parisian Sketches. So, I'll be on the lookout. Thanks again John.

    Jimmy Smith

Yes, but not on the LP, on the CD. I forgot exactly what they were but my recollection of what people said back at the BNBB (any my memory is a little hazy about this) is that when Blue Note realized there were problems they didn't make any more copies, making it a very hard to get cd. When ebay came along, it obviously fetched good price, nothing like Mobley's Straight No Filter, but in the $50-60's range.
