  1. From what I have read Liu’s assassination was a result of his bio of Chiang, not the Seagrave book, which was very good.
  2. I’ve been to a mall one in the last two years and that was only to use the bathroom a few weeks ago. It was pretty quiet.
  3. Dr. B3 The Soul of the Music From what I can tell this is a documentary still being made.
  4. The Dr. moniker was sort of like his saying I’m a doctor in bringing music to people. Here’s an article about him and the turban from an Indian arts site. The Self-Styled Sikh Legend Of Acid Jazz
  5. His latest (and I assume last) album, Breathe, was a wonder. RIP.
  6. I received my set (cd) a few weeks ago and have been slowly going through it. Disc 6, in my opinion, is the best so far, with Neophilia, Nommo, Peyote and Absolutions. This is the third and fourth sets on Saturday, July 10 and Mabern is just killing it. Outstanding.
  7. I think it might have been in the late 90s but he broke down and analyzed Slim’s Jam in minute detail. I think he did this over two or three shows, if my memory is correct. It was fascinating and absorbing. Maybe it was too minute but I didn’t think so; I learned a lot from him.
  8. He played with Bird on the Ko Ko sessions from November 26, 1945.
  9. Here is some more info via CD Japan: ”A historic performance that revolutionized jazz culture in Japan. The sound source for this album was recorded for the documentary film "Kuroi Sakuretsu" that followed the tour in Japan, but the film was destroyed due to rights issues, and the whereabouts of the master tape have been unknown for a long time. In 2017, the tape was discovered in the estate of a film crew member, and after several years of research, Blue Note Records in the U.S. has now released it worldwide.”
  10. Hope things are now on the upswing. Will keep you in my thoughts.
  11. Blue Note has announced a new Art Blakey set scheduled for release on November 5: a live 1961 recording in Tokyo. It will be released in both LP and CD formats. ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS - FIRST FLIGHT TO TOKYO: THE LOST 1961 RECORDINGS
  12. I haven’t tried streaming but on Hoffman I notice that a lot of people like Qobuz.
  13. NY Times obituary. Phil Schaap, Grammy-Winning Jazz D.J. and Historian, Dies at 70
  14. The last time I was there a few months ago the Jazz section wasn’t great. I think the pandemic has hurt them.
  15. Sleight of hand. Jesus. Glad I got the cd version.
  16. Good ones although my favorites are Dameron and Fats. I enjoyed the Quincy one. He doesn’t get his due in jazz.
  17. A really sad day for me. His Bird show was invaluable in my jazz education. He will be sorely missed. Thank goodness we have the tapes of the shows.
  18. When Charlie Watts Finally Made It to New York City The author, the former book critic of the New York Times, mentions “Between the Buttons.” That has always been one of my favorites. Another is The Rolling Stones, Now! because it contains Little Red Rooster (I think still the only blues song to hit number 1 in the UK), Heart of Stone and Mona (the Bo Diddley song, although my favorite version is the Quicksilver Messenger version).
  19. Things that are listed as All Sold Out or OOS in the BN store come back in stock. As to the Lighthouse LP set, since it’s said to be limited I’d be surprised if they make additional copies beyond the amount they said they’d produce. If they do, fans might be up in arms.
