  1. Not that I can speak to authoritatively; this is just a matter of something finally dawning on me.
  2. I was pretty excited to get the Decca recordings with Budd, Ben, and Johnny Hodges, but now, after decades of enjoying Woody Herman, I find that I'm very interested in Flip Phillips. I didn't see that coming!
  3. I also have the individual cd's and intend to get the Mosaic set. I find that the collation, remastering, and contextualization makes a tremendous difference for me as a listener. I had all the Duke Ellington 32-40 stuff, but that became one of my all time favorite Mosaic sets for those reasons.
  4. I listened to discs six and seven-with Roy Eldridge, Dodo Marmarosa, and Barney Kessell. I must confess, however, that I've been listening to alot of Woody Herman the last few weeks, and I found myself missing some of the entertainment I find in the music of the Herds, As Uncle Dave Macon said about Earl Scruggs, "He ain't a bit funny."
  5. I have a Sabir Mateen lp (not listed in most discographies)on a private label with a hand colored cover. When I told him that I not only had this, but also found it in Memphis, he was very surprised to say the least.
  6. Well, I really like the ones with Marc Edwards and Susie Ibarra...and at least one other.
  7. My enjoyment of Mr. Ware's work depends an awful lot on what drummer is on board. There is a whole slew of his recordings to which I never return owing to the drummer.
  8. Witches and Devils by Albert Ayler Halloween Spooks by Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross
  9. I listened very closely to the Sonny Berman/Bill Harris session today and liked it better than ever.
  10. Hi.  Is that Vagrants record good?  I really like Nantucket Sleighride and a few other Mountainous things.

  11. I would strongly recommend Soul Station, Roll Call, and Workout as excellent places to begin.
  12. I could not keep up with her incessant communication, so I only heard about it when she received the unexpected, even by her, response. She found his advice amusing-but it was oddly prescient given the way things would turn out. I carry the guilt not only of ending the relationship very badly, but also for casting a dark shadow over the extremely rare and wonderful experience of actually getting a letter from Mr. Salinger.
  13. Yes. It is odd and at this remove seems unbelievable and unlikely, but she was a writer and communicated extensively with anyone and everyone. If I remember correctly she babbled about a number of things in a letter she just wrote and sent without provocation, but it was the talk of our relationship that caught Mr. Salinger's attention and triggered a response. Sadly, she should have run from the younger callous me. BTW I am 62,
  14. 40 years ago my then girlfriend wrote and received a reply from J. D. Salinger. He (correctly) suggested that she have nothing to do with me. "Run" was how he put it.

    Circle

In the late eighties my friend NY Times critic Robert Palmer was really hot to reunite the cast of Bobby Hutcherson's record Dialogue. I would be quite interested in how the former members of Circle would interact nearly half a century after the fact.
  16. Review of the upcoming Woody Herman box in the Wall Street Journal. This seems portentous-but then again it is very nearly September.
  17. This was my first Claude Thornhill purchase (on cd as well). I became aware of this work from New World/s JAZZ IN REVOLUTION The Big Bands in the 1940s which featured Donna Lee.
  18. One of my favorite guitarists.
  19. The Bobby Hackett box was a game-changer for me. Not only did I not have any of its constituent records, I was not listening to anything related to it. It took a minute for me to get it, but when I did I appreciated a whole new to me aspect of music.
  20. PM sent on BN Small Box Sets Horace Silver Blue Note Records Presents Retrospective 4CDs $24 Joe Henderson The Blue Note Years 4CDs $24
  21. I've enjoyed this set for years, but a friend whose opinion I trust waved me off the last disc, citing bad pop covers as the reason. In investigating Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Land, I had cause to open and listen to the final disc in the set, and yes on disc 4 is a cover of Sunshine of Your Love and disc 5 does feature Aquarius, but these are not dealbreakers for me. The version of Equinox on disc 5 kills.
