Darius Jones "Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing)"
relyles replied to sonnymax's topic in New Releases
Shades of Black has not been recorded to my knowledge. I have heard them live 4- 5 times, including the Stone performance Steve mentioned. I believe the yet to be released recording on Giant Step Arts is a trio. -
Darius Jones "Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing)"

He has been fairly active over the years. I have grown into a big fan over the years and have had the pleasure of hearing him live at least five times, including once when I brought him to Hartford for a show. Love his group Shades of Black with Sam Newsome, Cooper-Moore on organ and Chad Taylor on drums. It is kind of a Sun Ra meets Larry Young organ quartet. I had a conversation one of the last times I saw him about the lack of recent recordings. I got the sense that he just had not been ready to record anything yet and he was working some musical things out. Anyway, I believe he has a recording on Giant Step Arts that will be coming out hopefully some time this year. -
New Dark Tree records release of 1985 Roberto Miranda concert
relyles replied to felser's topic in New Releases
Must have it. It is from a 1985 concert in Los Angeles. -
This one hit me more than most. Probably because he was someone I got to know a little bit. I was involved with presenting him in concert a couple of times and we were members of the same fraternity. I have also been a fan of his music since his Fo'tet recordings, Out of the Blue and his time with David Murray. Whenever I caught him in concert he always greeting me enthusiastically and I never felt like it was only because he wanted another gig. I think that is just how he was about everything he did. He will be missed.

This is a good one recorded in 1994.

I have not read the entire book yet, but I have enjoyed the chapters I have read. All though they are chronological, the chapters themselves are not connected to each other so it is easy to select chapters to read. If you are familiar with Shoemaker's online magazine, Point Of Departure, much of the writing is similar to essays he has written there.

Disc One: Fast Last! (with Julius Hemphill)

Just finished my first listen through the entire box. Great investment in some fabulous music. While going through the discs I also listened to Dogon A.D. and now I am moving onto the the CAM box to relisten to the Black Saint Recordings. Decided tonight I will read the chapter on Hemphill in Bill Shoemaker's Jazz in the 1970s. Going for a complete Hemphill immersion experience.

FYI, if you contact New World when you order they can probably send you a link to download the entire set at once.

Ordered yesterday. Looking forward to spending time immersing myself in the experience.

I wonder what "night" that was taken from. I believe I saw the exact same group at the Montreal Jazz Festival a couple of years ago.
-
New World also has a Bandcamp page. I am waiting a couple of days to see if it will be available there so that I can have access to streaming and download, along with my purchase of the physical CDs. If it is not available there in a couple of days, I will order directly from New World.

Just received yesterday. Looking forward to listening.

I have a lot of recordings from this label in my collection. Despite the lack of elaborate cover art, all the releases I have are high quality. Matthew Shipp has several recordings on the label that are worth hearing. His Ellington recording, To Duke was very strong to my ears. Also recommended was the recording with his trio + Nicole Mitchell, All Things Are. IN addition to Shipp I also have recordings by Nicole Mitchell, Rob Brown, Steve Swell, Jemeel Moondoc and others on the label that I enjoy. In fact, there are too many for me to list. If you like the kind of music and artists on the label generally, you probably will not be disappointed with their releases on the label.

I heard him live a couple of times in the recent years. He was still playing strong.

Greatest Smooth Jazz records: recommendations please!
relyles replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Miscellaneous Music
When I was young in my home I heard quite a bit of The Crusaders (after dropping "Jazz" from the name), that aligns nicely with some of the pre-smooth jazz reccommendations above. -
I have that disc as well as the solo disc issued earlier this year or late last year. I have also seen few livestreams featuring Gilchrist recently, including with the trio on Now. Too bad he does not seem to leave the Baltimore area much as a leader. He is creating some enjoyable music.

I have been looking for a reasonably priced copy of this CD for a while. I do have the subsequent release that adds Sonny Fortune titled Great Friends.

I saw that as well. Agree that it was well done. Also caught the Rudresh Mahanthappa Hero Trio Release Concert the same day. Wednesday Night series by Bar Bayeux started last night with Chris Potter Trio.
-
Starting tomorrow through Monday, the entire 2020 Vision Festival will be live streamed.

I caught most of both nights of the Kenny Barron. There were again some techical problems, but when it was working the video and audio quality were very good as usual. I think they just have alot of problems with buffering and other technical problems. They should switch to a YouTube format like Smoke and Jazz Gallery and other venues. There rarely seem to be any of those technical problems on that platform.

I believe the overhaul was to put it back to the system they used before they attempted an overhaul last week. In any event I think the overhaul is primarily related to the ticketing function. The actual stream has been high quality each time I tried it.

Definitely the so called avant garde. Each Chapter focuses on a specific year and artist, event or recording. Quick summary of each chapter: 1970 - Chris McGregor 1971 - Albert Mangelsdorff/Peter Brotzmann 1972 - Julius Hemphill 1973 - Martin Williams - The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz 1974 - Anthony Braxton Arista Recordings 1975 - Archie Shepp 1976 - Wildflowers, Sam Rivers, Loft Jazz 1977 - Derek Bailey 1978 - Jimmy Carter White House Jazz Picnic/Cecil Taylor 1979 - Art Ensemble of Chicago

I have only finished the first chapter on Chris McGregor and the Brotherhood of Breath. If you have ever read any of Shoemaker's writing on Point of Departure it is pretty consistent with his style there. Informative and obvious that historical research was conducted about what was happening outside the music that impacted how the music was made. I will reserve my ultimate opinion until I finish the entire book.
