  1. I normally find your intereviews informative. Thanks. Canada Day sounds like something worth hearing.
  2. I did ultimately decide to go see Mauger. Caught both sets of intense music making. I heard the second set Saturday night and my response was similar to Steve's, except the second set was only fifty minutes. I left feeling somewhat unfulfilled because the music that I did hear was wonderful.
  3. Either Mauger (Rudresh Mahanthappa/Mark Dresser/Gerry Hemingway) or Cedar Walton Trio w/ Javon Jackson. I am having a hard time deciding which to attend. Can't do both because they are in two different towns about thirty minutes from each other.
  4. I agree, I'm looking forward to reading an on line review from someone who's actually read it. I'd like to read it myself - soon. There are a couple of brief reviews other than the musician comments cited earlier on the official website. Monk Reviews I did preorder a copy and look forward to reading it for myself.
  5. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to it.
  6. And that raises something I have been thinking about recently as a result of this discussion. How important is the "musical analysis" to anyone other than musicians? Maybe its a matter of the difference between analysis and desciption as hinted at earlier. In the limited CD reviews I attempted for a print publication, I acknowledged that I am not qualified to do any level of analysis of the music. Instead, my intended audience when writing was non musicians and I therefore attempted to "describe" the music in a manner that would give the potential listener some idea what to expect. In a work potentially as important as this Monk bio, can it be a valid document without a significant emphasis on musical analysis?
  7. Maybe it is best to ignore my stated impression regarding in depth analysis and instead focus on whether Kelly's confessed perspective as a historian rather than a critic impacts expectations or standards?
  8. It seems that Chuck has been hinting and a couple of people have some inside information regarding an upcoming new Von Freeman recording. Are there any details that can be shared publicly at this time? I am ready to pre-order now!
  9. In an interview on Willard Jenkins' blog, The Independent Ear, Robin Kelly states That statement suggests to me that his primary goal in writing about music is not necessarily to provide an in depth analysis of the music. Does the above perspective impact any of the thoughts expressed so far?
  10. I already own about half of this set and would not normally purchase the box set under this circumstances, but at this price it is worth it alone just to get the stuff I do not already own. Just placed my order.
  11. Last night I was watching the series finale of the HBO Series The Wire (for the second time). There is a scene where the character Bubbles, who lives in his sister's basement, is going up the stairs and we hear the sister's music playing. When she opened the door it hit me - I am almost certain that it was a piece from one of Lafayette Gilchrist's recordings with his primary band - that mixture of jazz, go go and whatever else he is into. It made the sleep I lost when I obsessively stayed up to 2:00 a.m. even that much more worth it. By the way, I recently listened to Soul Progressin. On the surface the concept was not much different than what I heard on The Music According To Lafayette Gilchrist, but with increased exposure to Gilchrist's approach I did find myself getting more out of it this time around. Still something I will need to revisit when time permits.

Thank you very much Lazaro. I should have also included Tranformations in my original inquiry. I own the CD reissue, but the cover was badly damaged in a flood in my home a few years ago and I tossed it. I have the song title and composer info (from the disc) and the allmusic.com listing, but I would like to confirm the accuracy of the personnel and recording date/location info if possible.

    Bunky Green

I am working on a Bunky Green discography to be published at jazzdiscography.com. There are a couple of sessions as a leader that I can not locate complete information for. Does anyone have either of these OOP LPs and can provide the discographical information? Bunky Green - Visions Vanguard 79413 1978 Bunky Green - In Love Again Mark 57623 1987 Thank you for any help.

  19. They received a bit of discussion on a Chicago Jazz thread by Larry kart a while back, but Jason Adasiewicz, Rolldown and Keefe Jackson's Ready Everyday are both fine recordings that feature Berman. There is also a live set issued by Luminescence that also features a Keefe Jackson set as well.
  20. I just received my fourth order. 14 of 15 items ordered were shipped and I too received the Stitt box.
  21. Wasn't that on Warner Brothers?
  22. PM sent before I saw your last post.
