  1. It would be interesting to know an estimate of how many new releaes posters have actually heard? Seems that selecting ten favorites from a pool of one hundred new releases has a bit more weight than selecting ten from twenty?
  2. A recently published (if not incredibly revealing) interview of Logan can be found in the December issue of Jazz Inside NY magazine. Giusepi Logan

His playing is certainly more "cerebral" than hard blowing or passionate and for that reason probably not as easy for many listeners to get into.
  4. I finally got around to purchasing this disc. I gave it a listen on my way to an Anthony Braxton concert tonight. Very nice indeed!

  6. I am bringing this thread back to life because I think the label deserves more attention for the quality of the releases it has consistently put out. Today I was listening to the new release by Osby's current bassist, Joseph Lepore, titled Journal. In addition to Lepore the recording features Lancy Murphy on tenor sax, Tim Collins, vibes and drummer Nasheet Waits. Waits is relatively well known, but before this disc I do not think I had heard Murphy or Collins. This is a strong recording. The recording is basically straight ahead playing, but the playing and compositions are nuanced and interesting throughout. I don't notice a lot of advertising for the recordings on this label in the jazz press and other than the website, I think most of the discs are soold at performances. It would be nice to see this label get a little more publicity because the quality of the recordings is consistently compelling. In some ways it makes me think of the Smalls label in the production qualities, but a bit more experimental. Also worth checking out is James Weidman's Three Worlds, released earlier this year and featuring Ray Anderson, Marty Ehrlich and Jay Hoggard. I also have the recent releases by Yukari and Janguen Bae, but have not had a chance to listen to them yet. This is a great label to hear young artists.
  7. It is over in a matter of seconds. Compared to the time it take to do a tatoo, it really is not that big of a deal. ?

  9. I have three brands (one on my arm and two smaller ones on my chest - yes like slaves or cattle) of my fraternity symbol. What can I say? At the time I was twenty years old and felt like I would do anything for the fraternity. Twenty four years later I have no regrets, but I also do not advertise them around people I work with.
  10. I finally cracked open this set yesterday after purchasing it right before it went OOP. I had not heard any of this music before. Halfway through Disc 2 and thoroughly enjoying the journey so far,
  11. Tonight I a considering either Augusti Fernandez and Joe Morris, or Papo Vazquez. If I can get out I may even try catching one set of both acts - although Vazquez is in Hartford and Fernandez/Morris in New Haven which are separated by an approximately 45 minute drive
  12. I read a very favorable review of this recording in Point Of Departure and almost picked it up the other day when I was in the record store - primarily because of the presence of Taborn and Cleaver. I am still somewhat uncommitted about Berne, but I will probably give this one a try.
  13. Richardson is someone to keep an ear on. He has two recordings out - one on Fresh Sound New Talent and one on Greg Osby's Inner Circle Music label - both of which are interesting. He also features prominently on vibes player Michael Pinto's Inner Circle Music recording.
  14. Jimmy Greene is from my area. I have heard him play a number of times and have never been disappointed. Nothing revolutionary about his playing - just good music! Did not know he has a Smalls Live release coming, but since I purchase most of his recordings I will likely pick it up.
  15. I can't make it down this weekend, but I did pick up Warriors yesterday at my local independent retailer.
  16. I purchased the recording a couple of weeks ago. I only had a chance to listen to it while driving for a day, but my initial response is very favorable.

Turner has always acknowledged that Marsh was an influence on his playing. There is actually a graduate thesis available on the internet by a California saxophonist titled "Saxophonist Mark Turner's Stylistic Assimilation of Warne Marsh and The Tristano School" that had some interesting discussion on the issue. By coincident, the final tune Turner played when I heard him last week was his composition "Lennie Groove", which I assume is dedicated to Tristano. Notwithstanding all that, to my ears Turner's playing today is not as audible revealing of the Marsh influence as it was at the time he recorded with Konitz or with the Konitz influenced alto Nat Su.
  18. I am a fan of Moran's playing. I don't know the criteria for receipt of the award and have no opinion whether he deserves it over anyone else (although I would hate to think of it as some sort of competition). Congratulations to Mr. Moran and I hope he does something worthwhile with the award.

I heard Turner last night at Jazz Gallery in a quartet with Avishai Cohen, Joe Martin and Marcus Gilmore. At times some of the tunes felt a little long - a little editing of the solos might have helped keep the listener focused - but overall a good night of music. I also had the extra treat of meeting our own Tom Marcello in person.
  22. Thank you for the birthday wishes. Got in a little while ago from my birthday hang at the Jazz Gallery hearing the Johnathan Blake Trio and the Mark Turner Quartet. I also had the sincere pleasure of meeting Tom Marcello in the flesh. A good day I must say.

  24. Obviously that recording was assigned to an inappropriate reviewer. I do not get the sense that he had much of an appreciation for free jazz at the time of the review.

There is a chance I may be at that show as well.
