I am considering purchasing these sets and wonder whether anyone has any insight regarding any qualitative differences (sound quality, packaging) between the DIW and Koch issues of this music?

I did not hear a lot of new releases in 2009. I spent most of my music budget filling in holes in the collection. With that said, here is the list (in alphabetical order) I submitted for Jazz Inside Magazine. I don't even own an mp3 player. I do still own a decent turntable, but I rarely get to use it. The CD gets listened to usally because of the convenience. -
Received my disc today. Thank you.

Bobby Bradford at Umbrella Festival next week
relyles replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I caught him when he played the Jazz Standard in NYC earlier this month with David Murray, Marty Ehrlich, Mark Dresser and Andrew Cyrille. He was in fine form on that day. I definately would encourage those in the area to make the effort. -
This weekend I watched a very well done documentary on Dewey Redman titled, Dewey Time The Sound Of A Giant. I think it may have originally been broadcast on Canadian TV a few years ago, but is now avialable as a download for $10 from Dewey Time. Once downloaded it can either be viewed on your computer or burned to DVDR. It was produced and directed by Daniel Berman, who also did the Solos: The Jazz Sessions series. The majority of the documentary is Redman talking about his career - including some honest revelations about a couple of dark aspects of his life. There are also interview segments with Michael Brecker, Charlie Haden, Joe Lovano, Joshua Redman, Stanley Crouch and Redman's mother, who reveals that she never really wanted Dewey Redman to be a jazz musician, and although she loves (loved) her son she never really changed her feelings about his chosen path. In addition there is concert footage from Sweet Basil and another venue of Dewey's quartet with Charles Eubanks, John Menegon and Matt Wilson. Easily recommended to Dewey Redman fans that want to learn more about Dewey.

Personally, I enoy reading the opinions of both points of view regarding Evan Parker and appreciate both Allen and Alexander for their attempts at presenting their thoughts in an articulate manner.

The book arrived on my desk this afternoon. Now all I have to decide is which of the several books I recently purchased to read first. Yesterday John Sved's Sun Ra bio arrived. Recently I also received Ted Gioia's, West Coast Jazz, and Steve Isoardi's The Dark Tree: Jazz and the Community Arts in Los Angeles , has been in a pile next to my bed for a while to get through.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
relyles replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I did ultimately decide to go see Mauger. Caught both sets of intense music making. I heard the second set Saturday night and my response was similar to Steve's, except the second set was only fifty minutes. I left feeling somewhat unfulfilled because the music that I did hear was wonderful. -

Either Mauger (Rudresh Mahanthappa/Mark Dresser/Gerry Hemingway) or Cedar Walton Trio w/ Javon Jackson. I am having a hard time deciding which to attend. Can't do both because they are in two different towns about thirty minutes from each other. -
I agree, I'm looking forward to reading an on line review from someone who's actually read it. I'd like to read it myself - soon. There are a couple of brief reviews other than the musician comments cited earlier on the official website. Monk Reviews I did preorder a copy and look forward to reading it for myself.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to it.

And that raises something I have been thinking about recently as a result of this discussion. How important is the "musical analysis" to anyone other than musicians? Maybe its a matter of the difference between analysis and desciption as hinted at earlier. In the limited CD reviews I attempted for a print publication, I acknowledged that I am not qualified to do any level of analysis of the music. Instead, my intended audience when writing was non musicians and I therefore attempted to "describe" the music in a manner that would give the potential listener some idea what to expect. In a work potentially as important as this Monk bio, can it be a valid document without a significant emphasis on musical analysis?

It seems that Chuck has been hinting and a couple of people have some inside information regarding an upcoming new Von Freeman recording. Are there any details that can be shared publicly at this time? I am ready to pre-order now!
