Favorite Singers (Non-Jazz Variety)
Van Basten II replied to paul secor's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Frenchwise Alain Bashung is probably the best singer right now. Anthony Hegarty of Anthony and the Johnsons has a great voice à la Jimmy Scott, great studio work although the time i saw him live he hammed it up a little bit too much -
Robert Plant Jimmy Page John Bonham Sometimes the obvious is not obvious enough.

No way!!! You made that up, didn't you? I hereby officially withdraw my shock, now that we know Margarito probably beat the shit out of Cotto by having his gloves packed with plaster of paris... One year suspension my ass. I have not read the details about what they did find out but if he indeed used plastered taping in any of his fights, he should be banned for life, shades of Luis Resto and Panama Lewis.

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Van Basten II replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Saw François Richard Nouvel Orchestra last night, with once again a bunch of fine Montreal musicians such as Yannick Rieu, Steve Amirault, the lovely cellist Sheila Hannigan and many others, a 7 players string ensemble with the rythm section, a pianist, Richard who plays flute and Rieu on soprano and tenor sax plus featured guest Mark Feldman. If the Jensen affair was Mariacchneideresque you could say this one was Gilevansesque. Both shows were held at the finest place in Montreal for a jazz evening, Le Gesu. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?
Van Basten II replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Just back from a gig by the Christine Jensen Orchestra, starring her big sister Ingrid and a bunch of well etablished Montreal musicians Joel Miller, Steve Amirault, Chet Doxas and many many others. It had a very Maria Schneideresque feeling about the whole affair. It is supposed to be available on a stream if there is any interest i'll put a link about it. -
Reminds me of the Neil Young's song Piece of crap.

Picked up the Columbia Small Groups, not a big jazz guitar fan nor Farlow fan either , already own the Lee/Christy, would have love more Peggy Lee. Finally pulled the trigger on the Braxton and the Akiyoshi/ Tabackin and Tolliver sets. Is it me or Paypal screws Canadians in terms of rates, they were offering about 78 cents while we're worth about 81 cents. Does not look big but on a 300 $ bill it makes a difference. By the way, are you able to play the samples on the Mosaic site, my Windows Media Player says it does not recognize the files.

What's the definitive word on Definitive Records
Van Basten II posted a topic in Miscellaneous Music
Saw a few sets of this label at the used cd store last night, some Illinois Jacquet, a bunch of Louis Armstrongs and plenty of stuff that is getting tougher and tougher to find. Now besides the obvious Copyright issues, how do they rate besides the Proper, Lonehill, Quadromanias of the world in terms of sound quality and overall value ? -

Australian Open Tennis 2008
Van Basten II replied to AndrewHill's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The key word is fun to watch, Federer made me want to watch tennis again, the Sampras era bored me. That is why although i enjoy Nadal's game, i tend to cheer for the Swiss. -
NFL chat thread

As a Steelers fan, i don't enjoy exciting games i will make an exception this time. Arizona showed guts coming back despite what could have been the heartbreaker at the end of the second quarter. Generally care little about halftime entertainment but i did enjoy Bruce, he looked like a guy having a ball out there.
