  1. Just received confirmation that my 7/25 order is shipping. All but one CD (a CCR disc) is in stock, including the Dolphy 5 Spot.
  2. While certain genres of shows have probably gotten better (dramas, sci-fi, etc.) the amount, quality, and variety of actual music programming on TV has massively declined, imo. No argument there, Jim - very little music programming on TV. I'm (especially?) disappointed in BET, which seems to ignore the contributions of such African American-driven genres as jazz and blues. But the idea that people would get rid of their TVs or claim that there's no longer anything "good" on is like someone giving away their stereo because they only like bebop and think that no good jazz has been produced in the last 40 years. There's stuff of exceptional quality out there, but one needs to work harder to find it.
  3. And to all those that hate commercials, all I can say is Tivo (or some other DVR device). I'd go so far to say that it's essential. The remote for the Dish DVR is actually more useful than the remotes for any of my DVD players, making it easier in some ways to watch something that I've "taped" than something that I've bought prerecorded.
  4. You like Nip/Tuck? That show is just a wee bit over-the-top for my tastes. I was in a situation where the tv was on in the house 24/7, as Soulstation1 says. I had simply reached my lifetime saturation point and, "good" programming or not, had seen/heard enough of it. Actually, I've grown rather tired of Nip/Tuck; I agree with you that it's gone way over the top. But at the same time, it's "over the top-ness" is partly what makes it so (at least ocassionally) interesting and provocative. You may not really like/enjoy a particular episode, but at least it can shake you up and get you to think about things in a different way.
  5. I was gonna say "cool cover" but I guess i won't bother now!
  6. It's ironic that some of you are cutting back because I think the best shows on these days are among the best that TV has ever had to offer. Overall, far superior (with some exceptions of course) than most TV shows from the 60s and 70s. Just to throw out a few out there right now: 24, Battlestar Galactica, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office, E.R., Lost, Nip/Tuck, Veronica Mars. Not to mention some of the cable movie networks (AMC, TNC, etc.) that show some terrific old films, if you're a movie buff, that are hard to find anywhere else. That doesn't mean, though, that there also isn't a lot of shit...
  7. I'm sure Chuck can shed some light on this. Small companies like Mighty Quinn have low overhead, compared to a major label with a large staff and a distribution network to support. Sales of 1000-2000 pieces just isn't profitable for them, but it can be for a small company which may be little more than a one man operation. So does that mean there could be a Chew-Chew-Chewy-Beanie Records in our future?
  8. Johnny - good luck on the tour. Let us know if you guys swing through the West Coast too!
  9. See, it's the artists themselves - Miles, Trane, and now Jim - who would have less of a problem with this than their obsessive and often closed-minded fans.
  10. More here... http://www.superdickery.com/galleries.html
  11. A fan of Mr Loaf raises his hand. Just when I thought Mr. Nessa couldn't surprise me!
  12. Agree completely! But Kenny G still sucks...
  13. I agree completely. What also bugs me is when someone comes out to introduce a jazz concert and gives a fervent speech about how jazz is equal to classical music. A variation on this speech is that jazz is better than classical music. The person giving the speech always seems to shout, and to build to a mighty emotional climax when the jazz-classical music comparison is made. I always think, jazz and classical are not alike, and to compare the two head-on is foolish. I have noticed that this jazz is greater than or equal to classical music speech is often given by someone raising money, or campaigning for public office. Forget classical music. How many times do you hear - on this board even - that jazz is superior to rock, pop, blues, country, folk, whatever...?
  14. Why does Hollywood keep re-making old TV shows and Movies? Why do jazz musicians keep revisting the standards?
  15. I assume then that they finally found her?
  16. Obviously any Top 100 list will omit at least a handful of one's personal favorites, but that's not a shabby list of jazz albums. I have (or at least heard) about 90 of the 100. As someone else noted, this is a list of LP-era albums, so don't let the elimination of so much "early" jazz bother you.
  17. btw, that Perkins disc at least is real good!
  18. Yeah, but we had to buy 29 other discs to get that price!
  19. The Brotzmann-Boone Experience!
  20. No word yet on my 7/25 order.
  21. But then wouldn't the other discs in the set sound dull or "muffled" to you? Will get back to you on that, Chief. Have to pull em out and give them another listen. Don't burden yourself with having to listen to Stanley's music on my account.
  22. But then wouldn't the other discs in the set sound dull or "muffled" to you?
  23. The latest from the 'net... BANGKOK (Reuters) - An American suspected over the murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey during Christmas 1996 has said her death was an accident, a senior Thai policeman said on Thursday. "He killed the girl by accident," Immigration Police chief Lieutenant-General Suwat Tumroungsiskul told reporters after primary school teacher John Mark Karr, 41, was interrogated a day after his arrest in Bangkok. "They fell in love with each other. She was very beautiful. So he kidnapped her and killed her by accident," Suwat said. I hope to god that something was lost in translation...
