  1. Yes, that is a good one, and while I've read that there are others I've yet to find any. I am quite fond of Pepper, so I've been looking...
  2. Agree with Chuck here. It's not like BMG (or CH before them) kept it a secret that you had to pay shipping and handling for each disc you bought. If smart, one could work their system to your (the consumer's) advantage; if not, well, buying from them saved you a trip to the store.
  3. Sad. He was a very appealing actor. Can't think about "When Harry Met Sally" without recalling "Baby Fishmouth," which always cracks me up.
  4. Have you guys noticed how easily the strips peal off the OJC CDs? Why can't EMI/Blue Note harness that technology?
  5. Someone was pointing out the irony that one can no longer bring a bottle of drinking water on a plane but it's perfectly okay to carry on a laptop computer that can blow up at any time...
  6. Man, where were all you guys when Zweitausendeins was blowing out the Coltrane box at - what was it? - like $30 a couple of years back?
  7. I keep thinking this sounds like a trick question. Like: who was Buddy Rich's favorite drummer?
  8. Hell, if the Four Freshman can get a full-blown Mosaic I don't see why the complete recordings of a cold, dead, maybe-planet can't get the big box treatment as well...
  9. Some poor, inexperienced soul reading this thread out of context might think that Mingus was the most underappreciated jazz artist of them all!
  10. It is quite possible that Martha did not pick any of these titles, hired a consulting firm to do so, and fulfilled her entire direct role in the project when she posed for the cover photo. "Quite possible?" I can almost guarantee you that Martha didn't pick the tunes. Heck, she likely doesn't even know the CD even exists. Her corporate empire is vast; she's a marketing machine. Someone licenses a collection of Christmas-themed jazz tunes, pastes her name and photo on it, and sells it to her fans. Don't really see the problem with that. This sure as shit isn't intended for any snobbish, elitist, educated jazz connoisseur... -_-
  11. First gay marriage and now the elimination of Pluto. No respect for traditions I tell you!
  12. Salt is a universal flavor enhancer and could/should be used on most foods (in moderation of course). But on watermelon... never!
  13. It's only a matter of time, i fear, that all carry on luggage will be banned. And I'm not sure if that's really a bad thing, provided that checked baggage can be handled more delicately if necessary and provisions made for using laptops, etc. Having flown a fair amount recently, it seems most people use carry on bags only to avoid the hassle of reclaiming checked bags (an understandable objective I'll admit). But in the long run I think it may help airport stores... at least those beyond the security checkpoints.
  14. All flute and harmonica orchestra?
  15. I once bought a Kenny G album, but was forgiven after I explained that i was dropped on my head as a child...
  16. I would think it preferable to have more grading classifications than fewer. Seems a huge rift between M- and VG+ (or whatever the hell they are now).
  17. Jim (and Jim up above) are completely right. I sort of feel sorry for anyone who'd put jazz above a loving relationship (or hell, even just sex) and reject any woman because of it. That, and I'd direct you to the "Are You a Jazz Snob" thread elsewhere on this board...
  18. I blame Concord's slowness on Bush and his incompetent thugs in the White House... -_-
  19. Well, "popular" is a relative term. Brooks has what, maybe 5000 "diehard" fans, now at the height of his popularity?
  20. I dunno. Is it really being a "jazz snob" to think that all other forms of music are inferior and that anyone who thinks otherwise is an ignorant ass?
  21. I idolize Stan Lee, and I'd put his mid-60s Marvel work up there with the greatest of 20th century literature, but Good God, has anyone caught "Who Wants to be a Superhero?" on Sci-fi Channel? Even for a reality show (and i dig some of 'em) it's horrible! I hate to admit it, but Stan hasn't done anything good in over 30 years.
  22. She was also quite good in Mean Girls. Since then, though, she's become more famous for simply being "famous." A wasted career...
  23. Stopped into 2001 when I was in Cologne/Koln last week. Nice store, but much smaller than i expected. They were out of stock on the Dexter Gordon box and didn't know what i was talking about when i inquired about the big Mingus box. But I did pick up the Debut Story box, several other box sets (a cheap-as-shit Boogie Woogie box, Little Richard, Savoy, etc.), a handful of OJCs, and (most importantly for me) several Mangelsdorf/United Jazz-Rock discs that I've never seen before in the States. I would have bought more OJCs, but I'm still awaiting a second 30-disc order from Concord.
  24. Ordered another 30. -_-
