  1. Sounds like a musical Sudoku game!
  2. I agree that the 2 recorded sessions with Fischer are the best of this set. I'll second (third?) that. The only session I'm not overjoyed with is the Rowles, and honestly that might be due to the subpar sound.
  3. Might be your best shot at playing with Braxton. Seriously, though, with 100 tubas there, I'm not sure if actually knowing how to play one would be necessary...
  4. Oh, I agree. I was hoping it came off more sarcastic than i guess it did... -_-
  5. I found Deep far more offensive than Aric. But it's the difference between an adult acting vulgar and irresponsible and a kid acting, well, childish...
  6. Met Toth a few times over the years. I grew up a huge Space Ghost and Jonny Quest fan and told him so. Mentioned that my dog's name was Bandit, and Toth replied that he always hated that dog; never wanted him in the cartoon but H-B insisted. Regardless, still a huge comic book/animation talent. R.I.P.
  7. Not quite as simple as the poll suggests. I would never say "who cares?" in regards baseball, but at the same time i don't really give a fig about Barry. It's an impressive feat, so congrats are certainly in order, but there's no way he'll eclipse Hank's record. As for calling him a cheater, well, I think that's an oversimplification in some ways - and an excuse in others - but either way it will likely get him into legal trouble and hurt his reception at the HOF. So I guess my answer is "all of the above."
  8. That's weird/cool. Not enough legs for an arachnid. Still, it's not nearly as creepy as this...
  9. Thanks Rod. The funny thing about that blog and those comments is that i think some of them think that the X-Men are real and that the film is really a documentary that messes with the facts!
  10. The show has its value if only because "Moody's Mood For Love" is now one of the Top 100 downloads on iTunes...
  11. I saw it earlier today and had heard beforehand about the tag at the end. But even though i stayed past the credits - about a zillion names - just to see it... the damn theater raised the lights, started playing their damn music, and cut off the projection just as the tag was beginning. So could please post the end tag (with the proper spoiler warning of course)???
  12. We are also, apparently, the stereotypically elitist jazz fan...
  13. Agreed. And yet, if only as an intellectual exercise, if one had to come up with a list of the "Seven Greatest" jazz CDs, those aren't bad choices. It's one thing to argue that a list of only 7 is silly, but given that "7 CD" restriction how can one not include discs by Armstrong, Ellington, Holiday, Davs, Parker, Coltrane, etc.?

  15. Well, anything prior to 1950 or so would almost have to be comps. They didn't have "albums" back then (at least not in the way you're apparently suggesting). Unless you'd have them replace Pops' "Hot Fives" with "Hello Dolly." True enough. But why only seven? Do they assume the readers of Time are so ADD-ridden that they can't deal with a list of 10 or 20? I think 7 is just an arbitrary number. The editor called the writer or the writer pitched the editor with the piece, and there was only one page available and the writer had to do his thing in 600 words (or whatever it was), and 5 was too few and 10 was too many given the space he had. I think it's as simple (or as foolish) as that. Also, Time isn't an Arts/music/jazz mag, so they ain't gonna devote a lot of space to it and their readers most likely want something concise.
  16. Fame and success in the Arts is a fickle thing. Sure, talent helps and often wins out, but it also takes luck, opportunity, and usually a string of (often accidental) right moves to make or break someone. In my business it's writers. In the field of jazz, well - think of your favorite/best local musician who isn't known outside your town and compare him to someone with a record deal. Sure, there are the Rollins/Shorter giants out there, but not always that much seperates the local bar bands from the pros with record deals.
  17. Well, about a million times more people already know McPhee than they do Monheit, so that should help...
  18. Punctuation. It's your friend. -_-

  20. Being a broad label-comp, the music is a mixed bag and some of it may not appeal to all tastes, but i feel that this might be one of the most important and scholarly sets that Mosaic has ever done. There's some shockingly good and rather obscure stuff here that you'll probably never see together in one place again.
  21. I love the Onion, but damn if that ain't one of their most tasteless stories. I love it! FYI... on my last United flight a couple of weeks back, Big Momma's House 2 was indeed the Eastbound feature. That coulda been me up (down?) there!
  22. I love how Jack now has those Chinese bastards right where he wants them!
  23. You want vintage 70's pop? I've been digging this incredible collection for the last week or two. Leave your pretensions at the door, though... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&t...10:arkxikpdbb79
  24. Best season yet! Can't wait til January...
