  1. I like blu-ray, but I seldom buy anymore. My rule now is that I *have* to be *very* likely to watch a film several times to buy it at all, regardless of the format. I've downloaded films from Netflix through my Wii, but I've never been very happy with the picture quality. That said, I may buy the new Coen Brothers "True Grit" when it comes out. Just watched it (late release in Europe), and I thought it was really outstanding. gregmo
  2. Yo, The Sopranos thread is over here. Good luck with the timing of the shipping. You might want to attach a small bell to the shovel in the meantime. Or wear a helmet...with a face mask! We are SO helpful on this Board, aren't we?! gregmo
  3. The Decca! It's my favorite. But given the choice, the Columbias. That said, putting together a pretty complete collection of Billie with boxes isn't too tough. gregmo
  4. That sums it up about as well one possibly could sum it up. BTW, I don't know what kind of grasp on reality, i.e. on the moment the war ended, music biographers have but the Aladdin recordings look very much POST-WAR to me. And they sure ain't bad. And as has been said before, the "Prez and Teddy" and "Jazz Giants 56" albums of course are masterpieces. I was thinking of the Aladdins too. There is some amazing stuff on those, as good as anything Prez did pre-war, I think. gregmo
  5. The only one of those sets I'm not that enthused about is the Hackett. I think I play it less than just about any other Mosaic set I have with the possible exception of the Teddy Wilson set. I think the Herman is essential, and so is the Gillespie. And like others, I love the Mobley. gregmo
  6. Well, the Steelers could beat the Packers, but they couldn't beat themselves. Can't turn over the ball that often and win the game. Congrats to all the cheese heads! And the half time show was weird. gregmo
  7. I sure wish Jim would quit holding back and tell us what he *really* thinks! gregmo
  8. To read some of our posts about it on this Board, it does sometimes seem that way! gregmo
  9. I think EMI should just give all its masters to Mosaic and take a nice charitable deduction. gregmo
  10. Well, I for one am really looking forward to the set. I already have the Prestige/Pablo set, and this one will fit very well into the middle! I don't have most of the albums and am looking forward to discovering the music. If I like it, I'll probably pick up the post-'64 Atlantics and Apples too. gregmo
  11. He told me he felt my pain, appreciated the feedback, and had forwarded my email to the "powers that be". That's pretty funny--there are only three guys in that operation. Not sure which "power" he'd forward it to--maybe one of the other two guys sitting next to him?! gregmo
  12. gregmo
  13. I don't think brick and mortar would taste very good, but to each his own. gregmo
  14. She did write the book. It is available at her website: http://www.laurieverchomin.com/the-big-love-life-and-death-with-bill-evans/ I have not ordered it. And don't intend to... On the website: "an exotic erotic memoir" Hmmmm. No thanks. gregmo
  15. That's how I want to go. Dumped in dessert. OK, I know this is a serious thread about a very fine musician who died tragically, but damn, H.T.F., this was funny!
  16. It does seem to me like I remember reading somewhere that those two were "fake live" recordings, and that the audience reactions had been inserted. Does anybody else remember that?! gregmo
  17. I don't see "Dedicated to Connie" on this list. That was a concert recorded in Lubjana, Slovenia in 1960 but issued many years later (unless it is one of these and reissued under a different title?). Likewise, their later Atlantic albums like "Blues on Bach" are not here or later concert albums like "The Last Concert," but I assume you're only including material issued at the time that's more or less covered by the period of the set. gregmo As the thread title says the set will only include studio recordings. Yes Hans, but the poster listed the live albums too and asked if his list was complete. I was responding to that query. gregmo
  18. I don't see "Dedicated to Connie" on this list. 19. I too was surprised, but I'll probably get this set. Like some others I don't have most of these records. It is a little odd for Mosaic to be issuing music that's available elsewhere, but this is a cohesive set, and it will probably sell well. The MJQ always sold a lot of records. Might that be one reason for this one? To put a little cash in the drawer? gregmo
  20. Well, if both the Bears and the Steelers get in, it'll be a bit tough for me--those are my two teams! I started pulling for them in '69, the year they both went 1-13. I figured those were two teams that needed some help. Since then, they've both done pretty well. Still, I'll probably pull for the Steelers. I really like Troy Polamalu. Brilliant player, and great fun to watch. gregmo
  21. I hope so. My Steelers can beat the Jets. The Patriots would be tougher! gregmo
  22. I think you might be right there. I'm glad I visited it a few years ago. It's an amazing country. gregmo
  23. No shame here. I think I can say that I am truly shameless! (well, when it comes to amassing jazz records, anyway!) gregmo
  24. Algeria is a different case. Civil war has been the issue there, between "modern" Islamists and the old, now established anti-French revolutionaries who've controlled the government for years. Selfishly, I hope things stay quiet in Morocco. My daughter just went there for a semester of study-abroad! gregmo
  25. I'll confess to a liking for his work with Mel Torme in the late 70s (I think--or was it the 80s?!), but he could come on pretty strong during that period. Early stuff is great, but the recent Songbook albums are pretty good too. Like others, I don't listen to the Mosaic that much. Maybe I should get it out and give it a spin. gregmo
