  1. That teacher was talking pure, pretentious bullshit.
  2. Why would one need both? One thing I do know: the original LP was very effective. I have not heard any other version.
  3. Does anyone remember the Spike Jones recording of a Strad going through a kitchen garbage disposal?
  4. ... and rightly so, too. I would never buy a CD with copy control. It's kinda ironic that they tried that, in view of the ease with which you can now download even the rarest material; and in view of the rapid slide into obsolescence of new CDs. It's been such a sudden thing.
  5. After Lon's information, I need a spliff, lol.
  6. "And his mother called him Bill", "Far East Suite", and the 1956 Newport set - the one with the famous Paul Gonsalves solo.
  7. I remember when it first came out. My jazz buddies and I, all big Evans fans, loved it.
  8. "... She looks straight ahead not at he ..." Not Jobim's fault. He only wrote the Portuguese lyrics.
  9. How about the awful, un-fixable bit in "The Girl From Ipanema"?
  10. Ha, ha, she's cute, and that's me speaking too. Don't you hate all the nasty comments that you always get when you post a vid? They need to chill.
  11. I much prefer the (four?) sessions he recorded with Elvin. Hey, Okie, I have the later sessions if u need copies. I never play them.
  12. I love Wes, too. (What's not to like?) But I think Grant Green and Kenny Burrell were just as good in the 60s. All three have instantly recognizable sounds.
  13. All the McCoy Impulses are ace, plus "The Real McCoy", on another famous label.
  14. I don't think "Utter Chaos" was recorded by the band for Verve. As most of you know, it was their sign-off tune and they didn't usually play the entire arrangement. I have a short version on one of the non-Verve CDs.
  15. Aric, they're right. Whenever a Hank LP goes on eBay, some Japanese high roller puts in a $2000 bid that drowns out all other bids. I think the price the BN LPs go for is utterly ridiculous. I was around when they were readily available, and they were great of course, but we didn't worship the things. There are many other labels, such as Impulse, that are just as good. For some reason, you can pick up Impulses in fine condition on eBay for no more than $20, usually less. I'd settle for good CDs, such as TOCJs, and let the anguish go. I have all the Hanks on TOCJ if you need any copies.

    Trio Los Panchos

Nice to see this up again! I was in a Mex restaurant in Albuquerque a few weeks ago (some name like Guardino's), and we were treated to a delightful quartet playing in this vein. I had a chat with them, and when they knew I do Latin percussion, they let me join in on their cowbell. It was a very unexpected pleasure.
  17. Thanks, Mark. Great pic. Copied to desktop.
  18. Dead easy, apart from three obscure ones.
  19. Jim, some downloads appear in APE. I use Switch Sound File Converter to change it to mp3.
  20. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'll search for this title and see if I can locate a copy. You're welcome. These can be found as free downloads. "Proper Education" is very easy to find, cos it was a big hit. If you have trouble finding "The Wall", I can send it to you on msn.
  21. To answer the original question, no. But I do like Leonard Feather, Nat Hentoff, Dan Morgenstern and several others.
  22. Aww, Allen, don't be mean. Charlie Rouse isn't the most interesting tenor player on earth, but he is a master of the horn, and plays very well. The most important thing probably, is that Monk must have liked having him there. He's very good on "Five By Monk By Five" (Riverside, 1959). I really love the version of Straight No Chaser on that album. Monk's comping behind the horns is mesmerizing, and the piano is especially well recorded, with a lot of presence. Charlie is also very good on Sonny Clark's best album, "Leapin' and Lopin'". I used to play with a fantastic English pianist called Stan Jones when I lived in Joburg, and Stan toured the U.S. for 6 months on the same bill as Monk back in the 60s. He and his wife Ingrid knew Charlie very well. Ingrid used to sit on Charlie's knee.
  23. My kids are well indoctrinated. They probably know lots of jazz names. Certainly Trane, Miles, Bird, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea. My Dad is no longer alive. My Mom knows all about Dave Brubeck, Bird, Trane, Miles, and all the swing era guys.
  24. Hee hee, I thought it was Rudy who had hearing problems, Hans.
