  1. This is so sad......I work with people who went to VA Tech and most of them are engineers.....two kids from Richmond were killed- my son's roommate's cousin was shot.......I've been in Norris Hall- I know the campus fairly well......I'm just thinking of the poor parents, brothers, sisters, friends who've lost loved ones....I thought Gov Tim Kaine gave a touching heartfelt speech at the Convocation....and President Bush gave a nice speech also. Let the healing begin and let's hold off the blame game for a little while.
  2. I started my first honeybee hive this year for the first time- been wanting to do it for a few years now. I sold a Mosaic set to finance it- big start-up cost. I have one hive I started last Friday- got my 3 lbs of bees and the queen and transferred them to their new home. I'm feeding them sugar water until there's more flowers.....they eat a quart every three days. On Wednesday I'll check to see if the queen has been released from her cage. They will build the honeycomb and eventually start rearing young and polinating everything and collect nectar within 1-2 miles. About May 3 I'm getting a nuc (nuclear) colony- one that's already established with queen, workers, brood, honey and pollen so I'll have 2 to work with. I have 12 acres- half open field and no nearby neighbors so I believe they will do well. It's been fun so far! I have friends who are already placing their honey orders for the fall.....hopefully I'll have some to sell. I'm concerned also about the plight of the honeybees- we haven't seen much problem with the hives in the Richmond area- except for the crazy winter and spring weather where some hives died off. If I can figure out how to upload pictures- I'll add a few showing my hive.
  3. Happy Birthday!! Hope you're in the "April of Your Years!! (apologies to Sinatra)
  4. Excellent essay. Since I listen to XM mostly for sports- I'll get socked I believe. It's like our phone service here- we have Verizon and we didn't carry their long distance since we use a cell phone for that....well Verizon, the compassionate company they are, now have an all inclusive paockage with unlimited long distance for 39.99.....they could have done that before, but didn't. Since cell phones are cutting into their business- they now offer it.
  5. Happy Birthday To You!!!
  6. I have XM. I chose it for MLB and Air America and ACC sports. I couldn't care less about Howard Stern or the NBA and I couldn't care less about Sirius. I will like the merger solely for NFL football. Anti-trust?? There's only 2 companies and they mutually agree to merge- what's the problem? Now I believe my fees will eventually go up... It's a bummer because XM was kicking Sirius' butt with subscribers and stock price.
  7. Don't give up yet. It's only $41.00 and those 10 bids are 3 guys doing small bids. The JJ Mosaic historically hasn't sold real high over the original purchase price of $112.00 and there is no reserve. I've listened to it enough and hopefully it will help me purchase the Chu Berry set.
  8. My JJ Mosaic is on Ebay now- the auction ends Tuesday evening: http://cgi.ebay.com/Mosaic-J-J-Johnson-Com...1QQcmdZViewItem
  9. Where would I get the Treasury shows??
  10. Received the Cow Palace CD yesterday- nice package. The bonus CD wasn't included so I called the Dead today- the guy I spoke with said that they didn't get as many discs as there were pre-orders. They're getting another batch in a week or two and they will be mailed out to the people who didn't receive one. Haven't played the discs yet- I will tomorrow. I read the booklet though....
  11. Deadheads--obnoxious? No way! Besides being musical leaders, the band also led the way in merchandising. The ubiquitous akull and roses t- shirt giving way to a myriad of tie-dyed marvels, the stickers, the dancing bears. The ability to release a set of recordings that is over 25 years old and selling it out. But beyond that--the most loyal following in rock. I can see, however, how the enthusiasm slips into obsession and how obsession can become obnoxious. I can see the lost souls being a bit much for a non-dead head to put up with! Still, sorry you missed them. Looking back on it- I wish I saw them too.......the DPs and other releases will have to do!! Besides- my favorite era is before I could actually see them- I was too young.....
  12. I never attended a Dead show.....not because I'm young (I'm 45) but when I was in HS I had friends who were such HUGE Deadheads- so much so they were obnoxious about it and god forbid you liked any other band- so I hated the Dead because of them......so I went through other avenues of music, including jazz and then rediscovered the Dead about 5 years ago and saw similarities in the Dead's music and jazz. Discovered their music for the first time really so it was from a fresh unadulterated perspective and exciting at that since I had 30+years to review. I'd say 73-78 are my favorite years but I'm beginning to appreciate the Pig years more. Post 90s are hard to handle for me. And I like the Brent years because the B3 organ sounds great with their songs.
  13. I just started working though the Mosaic- again.......glad I bought it.
  14. CD Wolf is selling it on Ebay for 199.00
  15. Thanks Chalupa- you would think they would fix it and play it at the correct speed- it's been such a long time since I last heard it and I wasn't into the Dead as I am now. I'm with Orchiddr- let's see a Europe '72 box set!!
  16. Putting the breaks on for a moment..... I bought the 1st GD box set (WB albums)and finally got around listening to Europe '72 this morning....and I noticed Cumberland Blues sounded a little fast. I FF to Sugar Magnolia (track 9) and this too sounded sped up- Weir sounded like he was on helium.....Jack Straw, He's Gone, etc.- same thing. Now I've been listening to Dick's Picks and other sources and I haven't listened to Europe '72 at least 10 years....so am I crazy?? Does this whole remastered CD sound weird and faster to anyone else?
  17. Happy birthday to a fellow Virginian!!
  18. Thanks guys- as long as he's ok and nothing tragic happened. Mike
  19. I sent him a PM a while ago and no response.......hope eveyrthing is ok.
  20. Hospital room?? Hotel room? Did I miss something. I hope everything is ok.....
  21. You guys are killing me!! I'm like a kid staring at an item in a store that I want but can't get. I'm still living in the sticks and stuck with dial-up with no cable or DSL available.... However- people have been so kind as to offering shows to me......
  22. Nope- in Powhatan VA (near Richmond)- those frequencies don't have any radio broadcasts on them.
  23. I have XM and I use 106.9 and 88.3 on my radio and I work in an office park with a lot of traffic........I've wondered if I'm stopped at a light with alot of other cars around me, can I pick up a broadcast from other cars?? I'm going to try it tomorrow and see what I get. I work with people who have both XM and Sirius. I can have my Delphi XM2GO upstairs in my bedroom and I can pick up the broadcast using a transistor radio outside at a distance of at least 50 feet. Stern is on Sirius so you're getting their broadcast
  24. Has there been, or any plans for a box set for material prior to 1955??
