Thanks Jim! That was my thought of what you did. I'm the only one amongst my friends who has an older home so they're no help. I tend to learn things on my own, do a lot of research, know my limitations, and hope for the best. Right now I'm learning about our water system (we have a 225 foot well) and trying to figure out the wiring. I'd like to install a connection for a generator to run the well pump and other devices in case the power goes out. Unlike you, the previous owners did a lot of work on our house and they did it right, so I'm real happy about that. I wonder who has the oldest home amongst the members? Mine is a simple farmhouse built in 1907.

Hey Jim- In your first picture of the bathroom- was that lathing (sp?) on the wall to be used for plaster......did you place the drywall over that or rip it out?? My wife and I own a farmhouse built 1907......we are constantly surprised by all the little work that needs to be done- and it seems like I can't apply prior knowledge to the new jobs due to the uniqueness of the house. We also have a clawfoot tub with a modified shower head installed- we have one bathroom.....your clawfoot tub looks great- I really like mine!

Look Who Bought Their First Home!
vajerzy replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Congratulations!! Nice to see green this time of year... Doing taxes for 2004 will be a lot of fun deducting closing costs and interest paid and all sorts of good things that home ownership allows you to do. And if you're like me- your new favorite channels will be HGTV, DIY, and various PBS shows, all dealing with home improvements and gardening tips! -
No.....never will.....

This is interesting.......

Different people like different music......and different food, and colors, and places and people and sports and dogs and chili and beer.........it's a personal preference and no one's going to change anyone else if they don't want to be changed. The best you can do is expose someone to something and if they accept it great, if not, at least they tried. I don't like Ornette Coleman and avant garde jazz- no structure, in my opinion. Other people think he's great.....I don't see it but I respect their opinion. I like Frank Sinatra and Lon doesn't......and that's fine- it's personal preference. I once said to a friend who worshipped the Grateful Dead that Jerry Garcia was not a great as everyone makes him out to be and this friend freaked and didn't speak to me for months. Debate is good providing everyone's opinions are respected and nobody tries to cram their opinion down the other person's throat.

Mailing a Mosaic to Germany from the US...
vajerzy replied to vajerzy's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yes, I was wondering the same thing myself.......I have to fill out a declaration of statement or something like that explaining what is in the shipment and it's value. Do you in Germany have to pay an additional tax? -

Registered Mail?? I didn't know I could track a package that went to another country...... -
I'd like to hear from those in Germany (and other countries) in addition to the US crowd. What is the preferred method to mail a Mosaic to Germany from the US? I chose Airmail Parcel Post. Should I have the set insured?? Estimated cost is about $20.00 with the conditions described above, arrive in 4-10 days. Thoughts?? Comments??

I sold mine to someone a month or so ago....I got kinda bored with it after a few listens. I liked it but I think there are *way* better Mosaics than this.....kept a CDR of it for posterity. -
I received my limited training from someone who was in the army and knows his firearms....he was very stern and cautious.....wouldn't let me handle a loaded weapon until I knew *everything* about the .22, even though I was anxious to shoot.......I'm very appreciative of him. I think Virginia is trying to revive the allowance of concealed weapons in restaurants and bars......I think that idea is asking for trouble....we'll see in the next General Assembly session coming soon.....
-
Good point Matthew- learning to handle and respect them when you're young is very important. At least you had the training- scares me that people haven't had the necessary training to handle them.

NJ has stricter gun laws than VA....for example, you can't buy a handgun in NJ but you can in VA. I don't know the nuances of either VA or NJ but I know it's a lot different in VA than NJ
-
Owning a gun is pretty much driven by where you live.....a buddy of mine from NJ went with me to a gun show down here...he was amazed at what was for sale...handguns, rifles, AKs, antiques, tazars.....nothing like that in NJ.
-
I voted no....I've shot before, used to have one but got rid of it (a .22) would like to have one, but my wife doesn't want one around and I respect her wishes......we live in a rural part of VA and I'd like one again in the event I come across an aggressive dog or a rabid varmit- something which could potentially harm my daughter, wife or dogs. I don't hunt- I can't kill anything for sport. There's guns all around down here...and going to a gun show is a surreal experience! BTW- I don't mind people owning guns and I'm all for hunting but I don't like the NRA.

My take: What's the rule on when you're eligible?? 5 years after you retire, then 15 years to be voted in by the writers?? Afterwards you're voted in by the members of the HOF. Assuming this is correct, Rose's 15 years are coming due real soon. He's admitting he bet on baseball so he'll be eligible to be voted in by the writers because he has virtually no chance to be voted in by the members. The writers will have no problem voting him in. He's denied time and time again that he bet on baseball....and now he says he did- and in a book?? He's a pompous arrogant ass. Unfortunately Bud Selig will welcome him with open arms and he'll be voted in.....Selig should have Rose do penance by doing community service talks about the evils of gambling, etc......but it won't happen. If he is voted in- count the number of HOFers on the stage with him- it will be markedly less than for other people because of the animosity for Rose. And when he is up there- change the hairstyle!

Atlantic City - The Diving Horse
vajerzy replied to rockefeller center's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Putting aside the whole debate of whether it's humane or not, it was certainly a site to see......jumping from that height on a horse, let alone jumping by ones self was incredible.....the pool was deep enough so the horse wasn't injured and it climbed out somehow......all the piers in Atlantic City tried to outdo each other, and I guess this was the featured attraction at Steel Pier. -

Not for a day or so- everything is at home.... I went to Steel Pier in the 1960s.....ages 5-7 or so....the pictures you scanned capture it very well.....looks to be during the 40s or so by the 48 star flag. I remember the Grand Ballroom where *everyone* played: Sinatra, Benny Goodman, etc. and the Diving Bell.... Here's something I found from the Press of Atlantic City: Q: Whatever happened to Sonora Carver, the first diving-horse girl on the Steel Pier? Answer Guy: Sonora Webster Carver is still alive and relatively well at 98. She lives in a nursing home in Atlantic County. Her horse-diving career began when Sonora Webster and her sister Arnette responded to one of "Doc" William F. Carver's help-wanted ads. Carver invented the diving horse act and needed young women who were willing to ride horses that plunged 40 feet into a water tank. Sonora was 20 when she joined the show. Carver soon brought the act to the Steel Pier in 1921. Sonora took the Carver name when she married his son, Al. Sonora lost her eyesight in 1931, in a freak accident. Her horse landed badly, Sonora's face smacked the water and her already weak retinas detached. But by the spring of 1932, she was diving with horses again. She later told The Press that diving blind felt exactly the same as diving with sight - but she had a hard time finding her way out of the tank. She learned to read Braille, a difficult feat for someone who lost her sight as an adult. In 1942 the diving-horse act temporarily stopped, because of the war. The act resumed later, but Sonora chose to stay retired. Her sister, Arnette Webster French, rode diving horses for about 5 years. She died in 2000 at age 87. But Sonora, the woman who inspired the 1991 movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken," is still upbeat. -

1. Capitol Jazz: a wonderful collection!! 2. HRS Sessions: Again, a wonderful collection!! 3. Nat King Cole: I never tire of hearing his voice or his playing!! 4. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis: I have a CD-R of this and it is played alot!! Still looking for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis set!!
-
Well for me: Ellington Capitol: I like the Duke but some of those sides really grated on me so I sold it. Sarah Vaughan: Unlike the other female vocal sets, I couldn't get into it....I really can't explain why....so I sold it. Sam Rivers: (incoming!!!!)......I'm not a big "see how many notes/second I can play" kind of person.....first listen didn't do much for me...same for second listen.....I still have it but would sell it (or trade it). Teddy Wilson: it's nice but it all sounds the same.......I will sell this... Most of my Mosaics are the big band/older jazz/tradition/swing/dixieland/vocal ones....... I would *Love* the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis set!!
