  1. I sold mine to someone a month or so ago....I got kinda bored with it after a few listens. I liked it but I think there are *way* better Mosaics than this.....kept a CDR of it for posterity.
  2. I received my limited training from someone who was in the army and knows his firearms....he was very stern and cautious.....wouldn't let me handle a loaded weapon until I knew *everything* about the .22, even though I was anxious to shoot.......I'm very appreciative of him. I think Virginia is trying to revive the allowance of concealed weapons in restaurants and bars......I think that idea is asking for trouble....we'll see in the next General Assembly session coming soon.....
  3. Good point Matthew- learning to handle and respect them when you're young is very important. At least you had the training- scares me that people haven't had the necessary training to handle them.
  4. NJ has stricter gun laws than VA....for example, you can't buy a handgun in NJ but you can in VA. I don't know the nuances of either VA or NJ but I know it's a lot different in VA than NJ
  5. Owning a gun is pretty much driven by where you live.....a buddy of mine from NJ went with me to a gun show down here...he was amazed at what was for sale...handguns, rifles, AKs, antiques, tazars.....nothing like that in NJ.
  6. I voted no....I've shot before, used to have one but got rid of it (a .22) would like to have one, but my wife doesn't want one around and I respect her wishes......we live in a rural part of VA and I'd like one again in the event I come across an aggressive dog or a rabid varmit- something which could potentially harm my daughter, wife or dogs. I don't hunt- I can't kill anything for sport. There's guns all around down here...and going to a gun show is a surreal experience! BTW- I don't mind people owning guns and I'm all for hunting but I don't like the NRA.
  7. My take: What's the rule on when you're eligible?? 5 years after you retire, then 15 years to be voted in by the writers?? Afterwards you're voted in by the members of the HOF. Assuming this is correct, Rose's 15 years are coming due real soon. He's admitting he bet on baseball so he'll be eligible to be voted in by the writers because he has virtually no chance to be voted in by the members. The writers will have no problem voting him in. He's denied time and time again that he bet on baseball....and now he says he did- and in a book?? He's a pompous arrogant ass. Unfortunately Bud Selig will welcome him with open arms and he'll be voted in.....Selig should have Rose do penance by doing community service talks about the evils of gambling, etc......but it won't happen. If he is voted in- count the number of HOFers on the stage with him- it will be markedly less than for other people because of the animosity for Rose. And when he is up there- change the hairstyle!
  8. Putting aside the whole debate of whether it's humane or not, it was certainly a site to see......jumping from that height on a horse, let alone jumping by ones self was incredible.....the pool was deep enough so the horse wasn't injured and it climbed out somehow......all the piers in Atlantic City tried to outdo each other, and I guess this was the featured attraction at Steel Pier.
  9. Not for a day or so- everything is at home.... I went to Steel Pier in the 1960s.....ages 5-7 or so....the pictures you scanned capture it very well.....looks to be during the 40s or so by the 48 star flag. I remember the Grand Ballroom where *everyone* played: Sinatra, Benny Goodman, etc. and the Diving Bell.... Here's something I found from the Press of Atlantic City: Q: Whatever happened to Sonora Carver, the first diving-horse girl on the Steel Pier? Answer Guy: Sonora Webster Carver is still alive and relatively well at 98. She lives in a nursing home in Atlantic County. Her horse-diving career began when Sonora Webster and her sister Arnette responded to one of "Doc" William F. Carver's help-wanted ads. Carver invented the diving horse act and needed young women who were willing to ride horses that plunged 40 feet into a water tank. Sonora was 20 when she joined the show. Carver soon brought the act to the Steel Pier in 1921. Sonora took the Carver name when she married his son, Al. Sonora lost her eyesight in 1931, in a freak accident. Her horse landed badly, Sonora's face smacked the water and her already weak retinas detached. But by the spring of 1932, she was diving with horses again. She later told The Press that diving blind felt exactly the same as diving with sight - but she had a hard time finding her way out of the tank. She learned to read Braille, a difficult feat for someone who lost her sight as an adult. In 1942 the diving-horse act temporarily stopped, because of the war. The act resumed later, but Sonora chose to stay retired. Her sister, Arnette Webster French, rode diving horses for about 5 years. She died in 2000 at age 87. But Sonora, the woman who inspired the 1991 movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken," is still upbeat.
  10. The diving horse on the Steel Pier......I've seen it a number of times when I was a kid, growing up at the Jersey Shore.....I have pictures and a friend has a VHS of the horse.....I'll see what the name of the VHS tape is.
  11. Especially if you have family......take care of the family!!
  12. 1. Capitol Jazz: a wonderful collection!! 2. HRS Sessions: Again, a wonderful collection!! 3. Nat King Cole: I never tire of hearing his voice or his playing!! 4. Thad Jones/Mel Lewis: I have a CD-R of this and it is played alot!! Still looking for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis set!!
  13. Well for me: Ellington Capitol: I like the Duke but some of those sides really grated on me so I sold it. Sarah Vaughan: Unlike the other female vocal sets, I couldn't get into it....I really can't explain why....so I sold it. Sam Rivers: (incoming!!!!)......I'm not a big "see how many notes/second I can play" kind of person.....first listen didn't do much for me...same for second listen.....I still have it but would sell it (or trade it). Teddy Wilson: it's nice but it all sounds the same.......I will sell this... Most of my Mosaics are the big band/older jazz/tradition/swing/dixieland/vocal ones....... I would *Love* the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis set!!
  14. Pick a single CD that you can live without and send it to someone else......you'll get one in return.....ideally you'll receive something that you don't have....no money spent except for mailing....
  15. Ignore it and it will go away
  16. I got tired of seeing and hearing Schilling in Philly.......he's self-serving, and narcissic.....a Barry Bonds lite. "Gee, I really like it hear in Philly but I want to play for a winner".......and then last year and this year "I'd like to go back to Philly or the Yankees"......I thought he didn't want to go to the Sox?? MeMeMeMeMeMeMe......... That said- he's a hellava pitcher and he can beat the Yankees and he will lead the Red Sox to a World Series championship in the next few years. Just make sure he pitches as a number 1 and Pedro as a number 2.
  17. Leave it as is.....at least all things political are contained in one convenient area that we can read or choose to ignore..... Closing it would mean that all these topics would migrate to other forums and I wouldn't want to see that happen.....
  18. Between her Mom and me, she's got a lot of music covered....I like the Dick's Picks and I believe she does too!! Big Al- I have two stepchildren and I love them as much as my own....I met them when they were in their teens (they're 25 and 20 now) and they introduce me as their Dad, which is a cool thing.... I had the pleasure to walk Jennifer down the aisle last year.....that was awesome! Also- we adopted our 3.85 year old this past July and previously were doing foster care for her since Jan 2002.....she was 23 months when she arrived in our home......I didn't have *clue* about diapering, and generally taking care of a toddler.....when I changed my first diaper.....oh my God......that will be seared in my memory forever......but you know what??...all parents don't know for their first one but you make do.....even though she is biologically not mine- it doesn't matter......she *is* mine through and through....it's an awesome experience......draining, frustrating, exhiliarating.......but most of all- Rewarding.
  19. AfricaBrass- Good looking kid! Hittin' on all sixes! My little one is intrigued by the piano- she sits down and starts playing with both hands and looks like she has the finger technique already.......me, about the only thing I can play is the radio..... we're going to get a used casio standup from a friend and she what see does with it. Her Mom will play country music- she hears the Dick's Picks from me... If I can figure how to post a picture I'll do that of one with her playing the piano... Fruit salad, yummy, yummy....... Sugar magnolia, blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I don't care....
  20. AfrcaBrass: The Wiggles!! My wife and daughter are seeing them next Tuesday in Richmond- I'm looking forward to it since she'll have a great time! It's a secret...... That's the artist I play the most: my 3.83 year old girl wants to hear them almost every day when we drive into preschool/daycare........Very little time for "daddy music".....although she's been listening to the Grateful Dead during tubby.......she's home with her Mom today so I had some Stevie Ray Vaughan cranked real loud for my drive into work today! Those occasions are rare.
  21. I remember seeing a documentary on the History Channel called "The Men Who Killed Kennedy" or something like that......they had the conspiracy theory as who did it......now I forget the particulars about this but it appears to me that the two shots came from different places, especially the second shot that blew his head apart. There was some leaps of faith in the construction of the theory of more than one person. My belief is that Kennedy's assasination is something more than one person. To blame Oswald alone is too "neat and tidy".....I just think there's more..... We may never know.
  22. I collect coins and proof sets- you think OOP Mosaics fetch big bucks- try the 1999 proof sets and silver proof sets! It's for collectors- I thought they would go back to Monticello.....
  23. Updated- Lee Morgan is still around....
  24. What's a P-Diddy?? Why did he change his name from Puff-Daddy? And what's a Puff Daddy? Never mind- I don't care........
