I have tickets to see Adrian Belew in a couple of weeks, so Side Three should arrive before that. It'll be my first solo album of his since buying Lone Rhino when it came out (which is my only autograph for what it's worth.)

I've been meaning to rent this. It can be hard to get the 1st episode of such things, hence the delay. It took awhile for me to find someone who had also seen I, Claudius when hitting up folks for opinions. I wish nothing more for I, Claudius other then I wish more of my friends would take the time to see it, rather than saying "oh yeah, I should see that" and not following through. One of the finest things ever put of the small (or even big) screen.

There's always next year for the Mets. In the mean time, have a great birthday!

According to my databases I have 91 CDs of official Dead product + about 810 hours of unofficial live Dead (a few hours of that is outtakes.) Never mind the vinyl. And yet I saw 5-18-72 on dimeadozen the other day and decided to give it a whirl. Not a bad show (surprise surprise) and supposedly it's a relatively recent find (within the past 2 years), or least this version that sounds nice. I heard part of it about 5 years ago and gave up as it was distant and hissy (like an old Who AUD ) - not a problem now. I probably only do part of a show a week nowadays, but it's nice to have lots of bottle in the cellar to chose from.

Yay! Glad to hear things are looking up!

Of all things his new song is the same one appearing in those Chevy ads in-between innings. See, this is what you should have done when you were producing records. It used to be you had to have the overplayed hit (usually by Bob Seger) before it got played to death in truck ads. Now they're just speeding up the process. Speaking of ads, the one for the Sharp tv set and the lost golf ball has so many things wrong with it. 1) The "ball" looks like a white dimpless dot hanging in the long grass, not sitting in it. Maybe I need the fancy tv for it to look like something other than a white dot painted on with Liquid-Paper. 2) A whole family watching golf, with great interest? The wife watching golf with the husband? Has this ever happened in human history? The teenage kid watching golf with his parents and caring about it? This is beyond belief. 3) The other shots of crowds of people in bars & transit stattions, again actively caring about golf. Hey, I even watch the Masters and some of the US & British Opens, but the ad is just too silly, and the "special effect" is worse than old Godzilla movies.

Have a great day. Get yourself something nice.

I'll be durned. I saw ya I'm sure as I went in between sets for a glass. (I greatly enjoyed taking a glass of wine back to my seat after intermission, though I'm not sure I was really supposed to do that. But it made the show even better. ) 'Tis a shame you didn't see his release of fluid drain from the spit valve just before he started the 2nd set! It was so punk. I ended up passing the piano player in a hallway after the show and blurted out something like "great show, thank you so much." What can I say, I was starstruck after his performance. There have been some dandy used finds lately. I picked up an impeccable used Impulse! digipac of Blakey's A Jazz Message today at House of Records. I needed another Blakey like I needed another leaf on the ground in the front yard, and though I recently bought the Stitt Mosaic I guess I'm not tired of his playing. Getting sidetracked further into local used disc shopping, I sometimes wonder if I'm coming across your "victims of the upgrade cycle" now & then. Certainly there are Mosaic fans in town who might not post here, as last spring I saw 2 discs that are part of the Dexter select. Thanks for the Stanko heads up. I've noticed both CD World & House Of Records often have 1 cutout copy each of the latest RVGs within a week of their release. I always forget this and preorder a couple anyway, but I've ended up adding the ones that I was on the fence about for less than CD Universe a few times.

But they match his suit! I feel so lucky to have seen his band last year on St. Patrick's Day at the Shedd. He went from a packed house the night before in Chicago to a small crowd the next day in Eugene, but what a performance!

As someone who has "gone native" and became a Mariner fan I know Alex lit up in ALCS vs. the Yankees in 2000. He was 9 for 22 (.409) with 2 2b, 2 HR and 5 RBI in the 6 game series. Nothing like Edgar in the '95 divisional series but then again few people have ever hit like that (probably my favorite playoff series ever.) Yeah Alex looked helpless in this year's playoffs, but so did Barry Bonds in 4 playoff series until '02. Eddie Murray used to get ragged on for hitting .154 vs. the '79 Pirates, but he hit .417 with 5 RBI in 4 games in the ALCS of that year. Dave Winfield, Ted Williams...even Mickey Mantle had some miserable world series. Just think if the sports radio experts after the '55 series decided Mantle should be sent to the Cubs.
-
Oh they were putrid weren't they! Good thing for them they had Mickey Hatcher. Yup, that '88 Dodger club is why I watch these series, even when it appears obvious that there no way _______ can win. I'm not sure what was going on. I checked my old Sports Encyclopedia of Baseball which is pretty good about giving injury information but nothing for Aaron in '73. He played 129 games the year before or 9 more than in '73, so perhaps it was a managerial decision to rest him. Still, you gotta wonder if he had a hamstring problem or something like that. He ended the '73 season with 713 HR.

Well alright! I think the Cards are better than their record. Pujols missed a month, Edmonds was hurt much of the year. Rolen was hurt too. Suppan in the 2nd half (and tonight) has been terrific. They recovered from the loss of Isringhausen too. The Cards seem to be set up nicely for the DH too. If we consider Rolen to be an automatic starter now, they now get 2 of the 3 in the lineup and have 1 to pinch hit between Spezio, Duncan (a heck of a power hittin' kid), Wilson. And they also have Taguchi to hit too. A very good bench of bats, better than some world series winners. I still like the Tigers, but I think St. Louis could cause some problems. The NLCS is proof again while we play 'em!

With a starting pitching like that, you wonder why the team was barely above .500 that year unless they couldn't score much and relief was blowing games left and right. 2nd best pitching giving up just 3.65 R a game. But the offense was the 2nd worst, scoring just 3.78. They had a pretty sad offense! '73 Mets link. The Braves that year had the best offense (4.93) and the worst pitching (4.78 R/G) and finished 83-78 but were in the NL West back then. The Braves became the 1st team to have 3 40 HR guys with Darrell Evans (41), Davey Johnson (43) and 39 year old Hank Aaron getting 40 in just 120 games. A 24 year old Dusty Baker hit 21 for them too. I ended up with a full set of baseball cards from this year (had to buy the dozen cards I didn't get later in the late '80s), so I remember it well!

No, he hasn't been like this in the past. I think the injury & the death of his uncle really might be bothering him. Maybe the additional press, especially from the NY outlets has made him crankier. Thinking back to poor winning % pennant winners, the worst I can think of was the '73 Mets with a .509 (82-79.) They knocked off the 99-63 .611% Reds in the series that featured the famous Rose-Harrelson skirmish. The Met's starting 4 from that year will cause your jaw to drop to the floor, especially compared to this year's staff. Seaver 2.08 ERA, 290 IP, 251 K, 18 complete games out of 36 starts! Koosman 2.84 ERA, 263 IP, 234 H Matlack 3.20 ERA, 242 IP, 210 H Stone 2.80 ERA (more hits than IP with 157 in 148) Different era and all that as weight-lifting was discouraged, Busch & the Astrodome were big pitcher's parks, and Colorado was a minor league city, but imagine having a lefty that good as a #3!

Whoa, Meg Ryan really has had too much plastic surgery, and now she's doing manual browlifts!

News from Rhino spotted in Relix by way of the Steve Hoffman Forum: "The new issue of Relix features an interview with Rhino execs Greg Goldman and Jimmy Edwards on the future of the Grateful Dead vault. While short on specific plans, they did mention that early '07 would see the see the release of an "historic" 3 disc New Years Eve set from The Grateful Dead's backyard. They plan on issuing future shows in a timely manner but want to be careful not to tax Deadheads' wallets with too many simultaneous releases. Goldman said "I think you'll continue to see a series of two-track and vault releases, a steady series coming from the band" as well as videos and box sets, Goldman said, lined with bonus tracks and schwag from the vault. They have not yet decided to continue with the "Dick's Picks" title...."whatever they may be called- and they may be called Dick's Picks still - they will still be the same type of content...fans shouldn't worry about that drying up on them." The Grateful Dead's recorded legacy is stored in the label's football field sized archive facility in Burbank in three bays lined with shelves 18 feet high and 50 feet deep. "They're living very nicely down there" said Goldman. "We've even constructed a little chain-link fence on the aisle to make it very clear that this is a special area, and you can't just walk in and browse among the Grateful Dead tapes". --------- NYE eh? The "from (their own) backyard" bit doesn't really narrow it down. '78 has been released. No NYE show in '73 though some of the boys played with the Allman Brothers. Wonder what it will be? Unless it's '70 or earlier I doubt I'll be interested as the NYE shows that I have I never considered to be among the better ones of the year.

Right you are. '80s post deleted. Tough to pick just 10, as I'm leaving off Woody Shaw & Charles Tolliver to name a couple, but here's today's list semi-chronologically. Art Ensemble of Chicago - People of Sorrow Miles Davis - Jack Johnson, Get Up With It Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi Thelonious Monk - London Collection 1 (the solo one) Dave Holland - Conference of Birds Shakti w/ John McLaughlin Warne Marsh - All Music Air - Air Time Fred Anderson - The Missing Link Shakti was a "gateway drug" so it has to be included! The Missing Link probably has been played more in the past 2 years than any of the above, but I've had the Herbie Warner stuff stay in the player for days too. And the Monk is a great one. A great decade.

And as you noted, its kissing cousin Get Up With It. From an interview in 1980 Eno The Electric Boogaloo: "One direction is forming that is at an awkward, clumsy early stage. The main influence on it was a Mile Davis track called 'He Loved Him Madly', on 'Get Up With It', which has a very strange atmosphere, as if you are standing in a clearing hearing different instruments at different distances from you. It was mixed with that feeling of distance, and that interests me a great deal." Click here for loads of Eno interviews & stuff The one entitled Eno On Miles Davis may not be what you hope for, though it's an interesting point.

Yup, that's one that I've been eyeing for awhile but let the Stitt & Bix/Tram/Tea jump ahead with the August sale. No regrets btw! I'm still going to operate under the assumption (as unproven as it is) that any Mosaic Blue Note set may end up being RVG'd & probably Conn'd if one is patient enough. Thus I'll be able to get most of the Elvin set, if not all, on an installment plan with color artwork. If there is a hole in the set and I want it, then break out the Yen. No guarantees that this will happen, it's just the way I'm betting as I'm still relatively young in jazz years.

What kind of wine do you serve with that? Glad to hear you're A-OK!

Don't got, and not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but would you believe?

Not sure if they have what you're looking for as each has a limited selection, but I've had good experiences with the following: Jazzloft Ogun search Dustygroove Ogun search

It is, but according to the salary sheet at baseball-reference he's made at least 52.8 million over his career before agents & taxes. He's married and has a couple of kids who will 8 and 12 next season. I could see spending a year at home with the family and trying to get over the physical pain. Cause right now the kids are at the age where they're fun, but in another couple of the years the oldest won't want him around. Teams are always after pitching, so he'll still get calls. If the pain goes away and he feels the competitive urge he could come back.

I'm waiting for Crystal Meth Light!
