This is out now and the 2 disc DVD set is just under $11 at Amazon. The cover makes no mention of it though the back does, but if you love The Who you will want this for the London Coliseum 1969 performance. It's incomplete, in fake stereo, the mix gets rough in places and at times the footage is grainy & washed out and other times it's not. There are a few audio artifacts as well. All that said, it's one of the greatest performances captured on film from that era of any freakin' band! Once again Entwistle is mostly ignored by the camera but Moon is almost always in the picture and is in prime form (as is the whole band.) See "Sally Simpson"! And "My Generation" with the improv bits like from Leeds! The footage was fished out of a garbage can so we're lucky to have it all. As for Kilburn 1977 - whatever. So many will bitch bitch bitch about it because of Moon not being up to snuff, Roger forgetting lyrics, Pete not having good solo ideas, sometimes being out of tune, etc. (Legitimate criticisms btw.) The demarcation line for liking Kilburn is probably about age 55 - if you're over you're more likely to find it worthless, if you liked the band from Quadrophenia thru Who Are You you're more likely to like it. I think I'll be more likely to play the bootleg '75 Detroit & Houston DVDs before playing Kilburn, but given how inexpensive this set can be had I won't complain. Had I been marketing this set I would have called it London Coliseum 1969 and let Kilburn be the bonus. An absolute must purchase if you love The Who (unless you're a cranky audiophile, then ignore.)

I have a friend who was at Altamont. There goes your innocence. Same friend and another (now departed) were at Watkins Glen (1973). Makes sense I've known 2 from the latter since it was the largest festival (at the time) of roughly 600,000. At Watkins one friend arrived the day before and got within reasonable eyesight of the stage. He said they tripped and the Dead came out for their famous "rehearsal set." They had a good ole time, eventually fell asleep in the wee hours and when he woke up around noon or so there were about 1/2 a million people behind him. At least for the Dead portion of the bill (the other 2 acts were The Band and Allman Brothers) the day before far surpassed the actual show. The "Altamont" friend's Watkins' experience was one of drudgery. He notes he was a chump for actually buying tickets and it took a great deal of effort fighting traffic to get there with an annoying girlfriend in tow. He ended up so far away from the stage that he could barely see it let alone hear the music. Then there was getting out of there and breaking up with the girlfriend. Though Altamont has a reputation of being the "end of innocence" due to the fatal stabbing, the friend who was there didn't think it was all that different, just turned up a notch. Technical difficulties, Hells Angels, fights, assholes, scammers and lowlifes dealing poor quality drugs weren't anything new for shows of the time. Having a lead singer (Balin) punched out on stage was, but he's made a crack that at least at Altamont you didn't have to worry about the cops beating you up.

His presence on the Pee Wee Russell session sure kicks off the Mosaic H.R.S. Sessions set in a dandy way. There's a rollicking quality for lack of better term to his playing - so much life!

Benny Goodman Columbia/OKeh Mosaic available for pre-order
Quincy replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Depends on when the Great Depression ended in one's perception; many would say 1939 with the beginning of the war economy of World War II. The earliest tracks on the Mosaic date from August 1939, just before the war started in Europe. Yikes, I may finally need glasses. I read 1939 as 1934. -
Benny Goodman Columbia/OKeh Mosaic available for pre-order
Quincy replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Benny appears on a few tracks in the Chu Berry (disc 1), Basie-Young (disc 4), Bix/Tram/Tea (disc 7) and Venuti & Lang (disc 8) Mosaic sets. I'm just reading off my database so I'm not sure how prominent he is on all tracks, but if you have those you can give them a sample. If you trust Mosaic (I understand ), have the money and like to have a lot of material to work with when diving into a new (to you) artist, sure, go for it! A couple of years ago I went from 2 Sonny Stitt leader discs to 11 thanks to Mosaic and have no regrets whatsoever. To name 2 Goodman titles that are legit, excellent and won't overlap with the Mosaic, check out (if you haven't already) the RCA Small Groups or B.G. In Hi-Fi on Blue Note. And given that some of the music on the Mosaic set is from the Great Depression, maybe the current tough times will assist in a greater appreciation of the music. -
I noticed the day after the election I started heavily listening all sorts of electronic albums. It's a good way to flush away the long campaign. Another fan of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, and also have been playing Tangerine Dream, Neu!, and I may love it too much but The Orb's Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld is a lot of fun. Look forward to other recs here.

Any rumors about Adam Dunn? His consistency is forehead slapping amazing as he's hit exactly 40 HR 4 years in a row. Sure he strikes out a ton and isn't good in the field at 1st or LF (though he can make errors at both!), but he gets on base, HRs and hits lefty. You'd think he would be a Yankee option at few million bucks cheaper than Manny or Teix with the "savings" could go towards more pitching. The only news I've seen on Dunn is that the Washington Nationals are interested. That's kind of like being told the ugly smelly girl wants to go to prom with you. I think it will be very interesting to see what sort of money gets thrown around at players given the economy. Hard to tell if Swisher is a frugal attempt at getting at starter and hoping the percentages (he's 28 thus in his prime years, he can hit lefty) work or if it's building bench depth.

I like Pedroia as the choice back ever since you pointed him out. After eye-balling the list of past winners who bat 2nd it seems like they stand the best chance in years like this, when there's no big power hitter or the better slugger is on a losing team. In the NL Pujols getting it would kind of be like John Wayne getting an Oscar for True Grit. Oh Pujols has won before, but a certain someone's numbers in front of him in other years might have been smaller had that certain someone been clean. As C.C. didn't win Cy my guess is Manny won't win either, though both of those guys were amazing with their NL teams.

WTF is THAT??? Watch the movie. Once. My 14 year old niece is getting into The Beatles and I've been helping. She told me I must see that movie, and I gently replied that my impression is that it's one of those movies that younger people like more than older folks. And like a post below (edited: or above!, Hot Ptah's), from the preview I saw the '60s sure looked squeaky clean. How 'bout a Beatles inspired doublebill?

Happy Birthday, You Son of a.......
Quincy replied to catesta's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My goodness those are some very big mugs... Happy Birthday! -
As a freshman in '81 at the same school (Taft Hall btw) I too liked the first paragraph (and the rest of the review as well.) Were the records bought at Record Garden? (or whatever the name was of the bigger record store on Green St. kitty corner from the movie theater.)

Frozen mice cloned - are woolly mammoths next?
Quincy replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm all for it. Love the woolly mammoth! Once one grows big enough sick 'im on the Geico cavemen. While we're at it, how about a saber-toothed kitty? Tie it in with Survivor somehow, then maybe I'd watch. -
She really nailed Laura Bush in W. Oooo, that sounds so kinky.

Heh, the advertising is different for either each town or theater chain. It's billed as "Zach And Miri Make A Porno" in Eugene at Regal Cinemas. In more conservative Springfield it's just "Zach And Miri" at Cinemark. Not sure if it's the town or the chain behind it. And it's not just a matter of ad space, as Regal has a separate large ad where there's plenty of room to fit in "Make A Porno." And Alexander, to suggest that Jason Mewes is anything but a genius...shame on you!

I've never clicked on it; I assumed it was a link to a McCain campaign film...

Word is he loves hitting. How much that is worth to him, who knows? Probably not a lot, but it may be a factor. He's also a West Coast guy. (His fantasy football team is named the USC Buckeyes. He shared ownership with a friend and he said the USC was his contribution to team name.) I'm thinking he may be a Dodger. I wouldn't be that surprised if he was willing to leave a few million dollars on the table if he values that SoCal kind of living.

Yeah, apparently he's not familiar with the double switch. Maddon knows the double switch and used it with RF in a previous game. His reasoning was twofold: 1) He really liked the matchup of Howell vs. Burrell 2) With it being such a close game he was afraid of burning through his pitchers and not having enough left. It's always tricky to use long-term planning when you're facing elimination, and it ends up he was on the losing end. And remember, Kaz had only pitched 4 innings and Wheeler had been roughed up last time out. All that said I'm inclined to pinch hit and there and hope it all works out for pitching later, but things can get ugly when it doesn't.

Wow! I think baseball might be onto something. Surely this wasn't on too late for the children. Congrats J.H. and Phillie fans! And a great season by Tampa Bay Paps. They sure look to be a dangerous team in the East, especially with a full season from Price!

The Google cars and vans have been seen in reflections on some of the Streetview shots. I was mapping out a trip to the Portland OR suburbs last fall and was surprised to see that Streetview had expanded its range. So after getting my map I tried various other addresses in other cities and saw that my sister's neighborhood outside of Philly was included in Streetview. I go up her street and see this boy a couple of houses down walking down the sidewalk. It was my nephew! My sister kind of freaked out about it (yes, the Google Streetview van is famous for snatching young boys away from their parents.) Google Streetview is Big Brother!

Yes, Bud has some magic Commish dust that we didn't know about. Glad to see some common sense rule breaking happening (hey, while you're at it use some instant reply when it's so obvious too.) And I know the cliche about hindsight, but if he intended to use his magical powers you'd think they could have shut the game down at least 1/2 an hour earlier. If Bud was in charge of the Indy 500 they'd have to bury half the field before he decided to call it. I looked up the days of rain between games 5 & 6 of the '75 series (that's where Tiant was moved up to game 6.) There were 4 extra days off due to rain! Whew, how on earth did the 12 year old me have the patience to wait that one out?

As I said earlier, they canceled 3 classicals in my list. Tonight I searched for those titles on the site and found all of them. I put them in my basket and placed an order. I will report back if they ship. Thanks for the tip. I was hoping this might happen. Searching has always been dicey at yourmusic but it seems to be worse than ever. The Takacs Quartet Schubert: Death And The Maiden did not come up under "composer Schubert" but it did for "artist Takacs." If you don't first succeed...

BUD SELIG IS A MOTHERFUCKING lucky FUCKHEAD.

Woo hoo, what a game! Jamie Moyer is my hero. A damn good game out of the former Cub, Ranger, & Mariner. I'd think most fans of those franchises are happy for the guy. Great scoop and barehanded catch between Moyer & Howard on the bunt that was incorrectly called (but a tough call for the ump.) Upton's run around the bases, 5 man infield in the 9th...great stuff, and a great series.

What do you think of the "I came across..." thread
Quincy replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Absolutely love it! Would also like to add what a surprise and joy the drawings of the ships have been as well. Thanks for sharing.
