malware warnings...can a Mod check this out please?
Shawn replied to Shawn's topic in Forums Discussion
Google Chrome is presenting the warning. -
Please check the link below: Can you try and figure out what picture/avatar is linked to tattoohunter.net and remove it? Been getting this warning in multiple threads (my birthday thread, MLB thread and others) and I'm pretty sure it's tied to a specific user. Thanks.

Anyone else having trouble accessing the MLB 2012 thread?
Shawn replied to Big Al's topic in Forums Discussion
I've gotten that warning in my birthday thread and the Porcupine Tree thread, never attempted to visit the MLB thread so not sure about that one. Most likely someone has an avatar or signature picture linked to that site and that's why we're getting the warnings (just a guess). -

Final Appeal Through Indie Gogo Recording Project
Shawn replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sounds really good! The guitar solo had a Robert Fripp kinda vibe to it. -
Thanks again for all the birthday wishes.

Damages - Season 5. This latest (and final) season is INTENSE! It's already far darker than last season. I have a feeling it's going to be memorable.

Thanks guys. Had a nice relaxing morning...now I'm going to work. Short birthday I gotta say.

I don't really hear much Opeth in PT's albums. If you follow the chronology, after Wilson produced Blackwater Park in 2001 and then Deliverance/Damnation in 2003...PT got heavier to a certain degree on In Absentia, Deadwing and FOABP. However, the heaviness in PT is of a completely different variety than what Opeth was doing, the riffs that Wilson used were closer to stuff like Tool, a more "modern sounding" approach which has never been Opeth's thing. I know that working with Mikael kicked in Wilson's more metallic approach, but I hear a very different conception at work. By the time they got to The Incident the heavier approach started to dissipate and the full-on Pink Floyd worship came back again...PT's early albums owed alot to stuff like Meddle...while The Incident focused on the Animals era. I'm fine if Porcupine Tree calls it a day at this point, I love them dearly and hope they continue, but I'm sure Wilson will continue to make interesting music on his own. Now the next big question is what direction Opeth will take after Heritage...

Nice news on the upcoming live set. I remember reading that Wilson wanted to start work on another PT album after his upcoming solo album/tour is complete. Have you heard any other news about the group permanently disbanding?

Self-deprecating Jewish Humor: Ill Effects?

How has this thread remained without being moved to the Politics & Religion forum? It should be. -
Any computer with a modern soundcard has at least 24bit/96khz capability and can be easily plugged into a stereo system. My computer has been my primary stereo component for the past 4 years. Most blu-ray players can read 24/96 wav files whether burned onto a DVD or a blank blu-ray. I'm assuming you are probably mastering at 24 bit resolution and then dithering down to 16bit for your CDs, releasing the high res files requires no extra work because you are already starting with them in that resolution. I'm not saying "stop making CDs", I'm just suggesting another possible market for your wares. Audiophiles and jazz fans share many of the same folk. You could sell these files directly from your website and not even bother going through a site like HDtracks.

Doubtful. I worked for an online music store for awhile and there is very little profit to be made by the retailer. The record labels take such a large chunk there isn't much left over once you add in the costs of content providers, server farms, database admins, etc. That's why so few of them succeed. Apple makes minimal profit from iTunes store sales, they use iTunes to get people to purchase iPods, all the profit is in the hardware...the store is operated just to fuel those hardware purchases. I predict streaming services will start sucking away alot of the iTunes profit, because for the cost of purchasing a single song (.99 cents on iTunes) that same amount of money allows you to listen to 64 songs on Spotify in their premium tier. Why not strike up a deal with HDtracks to sell 24bit/96khz (or 192khz) downloads to your potential customers, then you will be offering a superior sounding product to what CDs can reproduce?

Who among us plays an instrument with the most modest of skills?
Shawn replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Listening to alot of Steely Dan recently has me wishing my chord vocabulary was better. -
Just started watching Season One. Like the tone so far, kind of a "light" supernatural show (no monsters or vampires) with a refreshingly wry sense of humor.

30 second samples are essentially worthless, especially for genres with very long songs, I never make a judgement based on a 30 second clip. These days I want to hear the entire album before purchasing (too many releases, very little disposable income) so sites like Spotify and Mog allow me to preview before plunking down money.

Entertaining "Syfy" series, kind of like Xmen with the "superhero trappings" removed. The always excellent David Strathairn makes a compelling leader, Ryan Cartwright (Bones) steals every scene he's in. The pilot episode was a little too laid back, but the series gains momentum quickly. Lots of cool genre actors show up in guest spots including Summer Glau (Firefly), Brent Spiner (TNG) and Rebecca Mader (Lost/Fringe).

Digression thread: Coherence is overrated

Caption this photo. -
I don't post in this thread often, but it gets boring typing "Mid 70s and sunny" every day of the week almost year round.

I need to revisit that one soon, been quite awhile since I saw it. I just watched "The Intruders" by the same director the other day, not completely successful but very stylish and creepy film starring Clive Owen.

Another article I saw posted today that mentions him listening to Yes, ELP and Nektar among other bands... Notes From The Edge I spoke to Sherman on a few occasions when I was running YesWorld, as he somehow got my phone number and asked me to put him in touch with Jon. The following is what I posted to NFTE #213, from February 12, 1999, following one of our conversations (don't know what became of "Festival of Dreams"). High Vibration go on, Sherman, and our hearts go out to his family and friends. - He gets it all the time. George Jefferson of the '70s TV series "The Jeffersons"...a Yes fan?!? While it's highly unlikely that television character George would be rocking to CTTE, for actor Sherman Hemsley it's something he's enjoyed doing since the album was released in 1972. Before discovering the band Sherman was a keyboardist with a background in jazz, grooving to the likes of Mandrill (whose tune "Universal Rhythms" was an inspiration) and Horace Silver (with his album UNITED STATES of MIND), music that proved influential in introducing him to spirituality and meditation. He soon latched on to progressive rock (he was into Emerson Lake and Palmer prior to Yes: TARKUS is his favorite ELP album), and though his introduction to Yes with FRAGILE was unexceptional due to an abysmal sound system he immediately embraced CTTE. He has been a major fan ever since. (Some Yes vets may recall seeing a TV Guide article on Sherman during "The Jeffersons" heyday; a photo depicted Sherman in a lotus position, and the text described how he embraced spirituality and listened to such "far out sounds" as Nektar...and Yes' TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS.) While Sherman continues to act (he'll soon be making an appearance on the ABC series "The Hughleys") he is exploring his own musical side: he is in the process of composing a musical titled "Festival of Dreams" with lyrics written by Yes' own Jon Anderson

One of my favorite shows as a kid, he always made me laugh.

Just finished Damages season 4. Really liked this season, fewer episodes slimmed down the plotline a bit but it maintained the punch. Goodman and Dylan Baker were both excellent. It also has my favorite final scene of the series so far, I practically jumped out of my seat and cheered! Season 5 is currently on air, glad this series is continuing.
