I just logged on at 10:30 am or so my time--1:30pm for the board and when I hit "View New Content" I don't get anything posted earlier than about an hour ago. This has been happening for the last few days. What's up with that?

If you like All Blues, check out Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth.

I just finished reading the above titled book by Greg Milner. It should perhaps be subtitled "an anecdotal history" but the anecdotes are quite interesting if depressing. The most depressing chapter is about dynamic compression and clipping. In it he says that these techniques have begun to be used in jazz recordings though he doesn't name any. On the other hand he tells how the backlash against them began when a fan compared Chili Pepper' Californication (the worst mastered cd ever apparently) with some remasters of Miles and Trane records. I'm sure many audiophiles will agree with his contention that analogue is better than digital. But then he also suggest that acoustic recording is better than electric recording and that cylinders are better than discs. Even he seems to understand that that way lies madness.

Oh,no! He was a great guy. Used to spend a lot of time with him when I first moved to Toronto and he was working at Sam's. Talked to him on the phone fairly often after I moved to LA. (To the best of my knowledge he never did get e-mail.) I guess I'm at that age where I shouldn't be surprised to hear that a friend has died but it' still a shock. I'll really miss him.

I know Ornithology is based on the changes to How High the Moon and Anthropology (like many others) on I Got Rhythm, but what's the bop tune (or tunes) based on Honeysuckle Rose ? Is there a listing of all these somewhere? (I ask because I've been listening to an Ellington live date from the '50s and in the middle of Honeysuckle Rose the band plays a chorus of a familiar bop tune I can't remember the name of.)

LF: Thelonious Monk, "Nice Work If You Can Get It"
medjuck replied to ghost of miles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've got it. How do you want me to get it to you? -
One of those Verve "Jazz Round Midnight" has Davenport Blues from this session. Very influenced by the Gil Evans version. I'd love to hear more form this session.

I'd be curious to know of any of the issues (Lp or cd) contain the missing 30 seconds of music.
-
Of the ones mentioned here: http://www.blogto.com/toronto/the_best_used_cd_stores_in_toronto/ I've spent a lot of time in She said Boom on College and Around Again in Baldwin village. They're both small but good. IIRC Sonic Boom is big and has no vinyl but I've found some interesting things there. Soundscapes just a block or 2 west of She Said Boom on College is a very good new cd store.

David Thomson's "The Moment of Psycho". Very short book about the film. Recommended if you like the film as much as I do.

That's sounds more plausible. So is the 27 seconds on any cd? Was it on the original Lp release?
-
Does any cd release of the concert contain the missing 30 minutes of I Got Rhythm?
-
I thought you were referring to "Baby I've got News For You" (I think that's the title which Woody recorded before Ray Charles did it on "Genius + Jazz".

A concert recorded in stereo in '53?!! Maybe it was recorded with 2 mikes but I can't believe that it was meant to be in stereo.

Paul Horn is a good friend of a neighbor of mine. I've run into them a couple of times while we were all out walking. Saw him perform in LA in the 80's.
-
I've seen them a couple of times. They're fun and would probably be great at a party, but in concert they're only mildly amusing. (I do like the song Hey Eugene, one of the few originals they do, a lot. My wife's band has added it to their repertoire. )

I've read in a couple of places that Kid Ory's band was the first Black Jazz band to be recorded (in LA in 1922) Should that be amended to the first Black Jazz band to be recorded on the West Coast (which is what it says in his Wikipedia entry)?

I own the first 2 of these but not the 3rd. However I do have the Frankie Newton session that Spoontaneous mentions which is one of the Panssie sessions. So I guess I'm just missing the one with de Paris-- or are there others I'm missing?
-
I'm confused: I have the cd of the Jazz Tribune "Complete Sidney Bechet" 1931-42 and it only has 4 cuts from 1938. (And it should really be called The Complete Sidney Bechet on Victor.) There are some cuts with Sidney de Paris from 1940. Are they from the Panassie Sessions? Or can someone lead me to a listing of the Panassie Sessions. BTW I've had a great time re-listening to all these Bechet sessions. Most of them are great-- even the ones on King Jazz.

They're essential sides. Most of them are available on the Classics Mezz Mezzrow 1936-1939 CD. Also on a Hugues Panassié Sessions CD from the Hot Club de France that I see around off and on. Will try to pick it up for you! That would be most kind! I've never seen any Mezzrow Classics around here! The Mezzrow Classics are going for $85 on Amazon! I do have the 4 cuts with Bechet on an RCA cd but Brownie if you can find a reasonably priced cd of the Panassie Sessions for me too I'd appreciate it.

I just discovered the King recordings. Well, sort of-- I downloaded from iTunes something called" Mezz Mezzrow talks about King Records". Mezz apparently was one of the owners of the label. There are 18 songs and each is introduced by a story from Mezz. It's fascinating and the music is as you describe and pretty great but now I have to figure out how to get rid of the spoken introductions for further listening. (Actually iTunes does allow you to indicate at what place you want to start listening.)

I just got an e-mail from a friend informing me that Kate McGarrigle has died. I'm a big fan of the McGarrigle Sisters and have Kate's composition "Kiss and Say Goodbye" as the ringtone on my phone. By my standards she was quite young-- 63.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll start looking for them ASAP. ( I do have the H.R.S. Mosaic set which is great but most of it is more up-tempo than the POH.)

I was there 45 years ago and I'd love to go back to see what the Aran islands are like today. We spent a few days on Inishmore the largest island and in those days they didn't have electricity. It was quite a wonderful place.

I love the Bluenote "Port of Harlem Jazzmen" cd (and Mosaic kindly sent me a copy of the notes to their OOP release) but I feel that I've never found anything else quite like it. ( I realize that each session under the name Port of Harlem Jazzmen was done by a slightly different group .) Anyone got any suggestions as to what I might find similar? I do have a few Bechet cds and the Mosaic box set and a good Frankie Newton compilation but nothing I like as much asa the Bluenote cd.
