  1. Johnny Coles————Little Johnny C————( BN) mono NY I've always had a soft spot for this session. Great numbers by a more than competent band. Duke P shines here as he so often does.
  2. I really like the HMV issues of Trane’s Impulse catalog. I’ll have about half a dozen, all monos and all sound and feel lovely. As I understand it these were made from copy tapes sent to the UK. The ALS UK copy was used for the 2CD issue of ALS. They’d probably survived better because they hadn’t been repeatedly used for reissue after reissue. Ultimately it doesn’t matter as the music on A Love Supreme sucks you in totally such that audio geekery becomes inconsequential...
  3. Interested for sure . Is this one of those sessions that Cuscuna marked up as a reject or is this a ‘new’ discovery?
  4. Keith Tippett/ Andy Sheppard———-66 Shades of Lipstick —-—-( Editions EG) Recorded 30 years ago this July. I probably bought this based on a review in The Wire. Back in the days when the late Richard Cook was editor. It’s a fine album although I do recall thinking it a tad forbidding at the time. Mind you back then I couldn’t get my head around Cecil Taylor. ......
  5. Sad news . An amazing musician of the highest order. I recall him looking pretty frail when I saw him perform over a decade ago. Last of the quartet..,
  6. Well remembered I think you might be right. I’ve pretty much stopped adding 78s to my collection on account of just how much space and weight they take up. I’ve a fair number of Esquire UK 78 issues of Dial material. My understanding is that these date from the early 50s so were released later than the Dials. The sound is usually very good but I’ve no idea whether they had access to masters or metal parts etc . They certainly don’t sound like the 78 dubs that I’ve come across.
  7. According to HJ in the past products that had ‘Iran’ in the title caused the same issues. I’d agree that the sound on Duo Exchange is excellent as is the music . I’m pretty partial to Frank Lowe having been bowled over by a live performance with Billy Bang many years ago.
  8. Yes very interesting. I’m not clear who wrote the piece and what label is involved
  9. My first two attempts to buy this were thwarted by PayPal as they found “ a risk associated with your payment”. Apparently the presence of Rashied Ali’s name was the issue !!! In that case they should decline all payments in regards to the Jazz Messengers.
  10. Likewise but I thought after I’d bought! On the up side the sound is excellent but then it ought to be if it’s copied from a CD.
  11. Damn I hate it when that happens. I avoid boots for all the obvious reasons. 😢
  12. Don Cherry/ Steve Lacy/ Dave Holland/ Masahiko Togashi————Live at Yubin Chokin, Kaikan Hall , Tokyo, May 14 1986—————( Victory) I’ve no idea about the provenance of this new record. Two tracks are previously released. Overall it has the vibe of Lacy guesting with Cherry’s Multikulti , have a similar vibe.
  13. It was outstanding. I was with some friends and it’s safe to say that we were all blown off our feet. The band were really tight with sparks flying. here’s a photo taken with my film camera
  14. I used to shipping the other way from USA to UK and 3-4 weeks isn’t uncommon. I’d probably give it another week
  15. Picked up a couple of Decoy discs including their latest at their gig in Edinburgh last Friday with Joe McPhee plus this one ...it’s excellent McPhee/ Edwards/ Kugel —- A night in Alchemia——( nottwo)
  16. At first it was Sarah V but as time has passed I found her operatic diva thing too much to take. I much prefer Ella’s freedom and phrasing.
  17. I’m looking forward to seeing Decoy with Joe McPhee tomorrow here in Edinburgh. It should be a real treat as I’ve not seen Joe live before.
  18. Whoever bought it should have no regrets as it’s a lovely set in fabulous sound.
  19. Having spun Reid’s new Old New quite a bit recently I decided to give this one with Nick Mazzarella an outing . Tomeka Reid/ Nick Marrazella —-Signaling——-(nessa) I’d forgotten how much this one impressed me . She’s a real talent.
  20. I had the Pacific LP with Tucker and let it go on account of being IMO pretty dull. Nothing terrible but too much like cocktail lounge music.
  21. I’m a bit surprised by this as I didn’t think any apology was necessary. After some of the crowdfunding debacles elsewhere Mosaic’s service can only be seen as exemplary
  22. Very sad news. He’d clearly been unwell for some time. I love all the Pythons but he was special
