  1. I went for 10 and then another ten, I feel bad in some ways taking advantage of the sale because things must be bad. I chose a mixture of discs largely from people I'd never heard of.
  2. I'm not so keen on the Albam but the Gibbs is pretty good
  3. thanks for the link, very interesting.
  4. Jeff have a very happy birthday.
  5. In my first year at uni, a friend suggested that as I liked the trad jazz band that had played at a faculty function then I might like Charlie Parker !! I had never heard of him but got the Savoy Master takes which blew me away. So I'll go with Savoy ( although I've still to hear all the other takes)
  6. Lee Wiley - Gershwin & Porter- 1939-1940 Liberty Music Shop Recordings- Audiophile
  7. Played loads of 78s over the past three days. I've at last sorted out EQ issues with addition of a cheap Radio Shack graphic equaliser, to EQ the sound from my RIAA phono amp that I use for 78 play back. Now I can't believe what detail I've previously been missing while listening to 78s. Currently spinning Dizzy Gillespie Be-Bop/Salted Peanuts- Manor - 2 fabulous sides even if Trummy Young is a poor fit
  8. Jefferson Airplane- Crown of Creation- RCA, naff cover but very good album
  9. About £200-ish for a original 47W63rd in A-1 nick now, I think. where as my NY mono - which sounds really great, cost me £15 about six months ago.
  10. Couple of 78s before watching rugby this morning Arnett Cobb- Dutch Kitchen Bounce/ Go Red go- Apollo 778 Eddie Davis Lover/Licks a plenty- Apollo 767 It would be nice to see a label retrospective of Apollo sessions. These two discs are great.
  11. Herb Geller - Stax of Sax - Jubilee, Superlaphonic ( aka mono !!)
  12. I might well go for this. I've the two Chick Webb Hep CDs which I think must all be included on this proposed set. Still that leaves 5 CDs unknown to me and I rather like early Ella.
  13. A mid 60s Czech LP , picked up yesterday in Oxfam, S+H Quintet -Jak Hral Supraphon DV 10200, mixture of styles from this aggregation , varying instrumentations from quintet to nonet all largely hardbop flavoured but with elements of freedom. It's got a mixture of standards and originals. Glad I picked this up.
  14. this is a good one
  15. Harold Mabern - Joy Spring - Sackville, recorded 1985 by our own Ted O'Reilly, I'm not a huge fan of Mabern or solo piano for that matter but this is a nice set of tunes played with played with plenty of soul.
  16. very sad, like his work
  17. Not me, I got mine from Alan at jazzhouserecords
  18. Nice. Been trying to score a clean US Savoy pressing of this for years. Never even heard of that one. Good to know there's more Ted Brown around. apologies as this is lead by Ronnie Ball not Ted Brown. Both of them get a very fine showing of course. My copy is US Savoy - original ( I think ) in very nice condition which I purchased a few months ago.
  19. I've got Tuxedo Junction on a Bluebird 78 and I love it. The Victor sides were gathered together across two rather nice LPs in the B&W series from France. No real soloists of note as I remember but a pleasant overall sound.
  20. overall colour and five people
  21. Ted Brown -All about Ronnie - Savoy. EDIT to note that this is credited to the Ronnie Ball Quintet
  22. Ornette at 12 - Impulse Stereo

Sorry I can't shed any light on Israel but currently spinning "The New Jazz Sound of Showboat", Larry's assessment is on the money a somewhat commercial outing with some fine Brookmeyer, the Guitar Choir is actually pretty muted so it doesn't sound too lush.
  24. Henry Allen and His Orchestra -Body and Soul /Get Rhythm in Your Feet UK Parlophone R2935 Allen (tpt) with Cecil Scott (d); "Chu " Berry (ten) ; Dickie Wells (tmb); Horace Henderson (p); Bernard Addison (g) ; John Kirby (5); Walter Johnson (ds). April 29, 1935. Some fine Chu heard on this. B&S is all round the more satisfying performance. EDIT to note that Body and Soul isn't on the Mosaic Chu box-no solo space !
