Jackie McLean- Destination Out - NY mono Duke Pearson - Sweet Honey Bee - Liberty mono
-
How is it? Worth the £? It's very brief but wonderfully recorded in glorious mono. Well worth it, get it before it goes. I've got all of the Gearbox vinyls and this was the first. The latest by Ronnie Scott is also excellent.

The Octet was broadcast on BBCR3 , I was very impressed.

My CD version of this from Charly/Affinity (UK) sounds quite grainy and rough sounding , are there better sounding versions out there ?

Lovely! At one time the CD held my record for overpayment - £21 at HMV! "Those were the days" isn't always the watchword where record buying is concerned. £21 for a CD !! No wonder the whole kaboosh fell apart. Come to think of it, I can remember the time when most CDs here were £16-17 or thereabouts and that was for non-imports too. I bought it in 1993 when, IIRC, £13 was a typical jazz CD price. I have to confess to paying £40 to get this........... on a NY (stereo) , Now spinning this Joe Henderson - Page One - NY Mono- a long standing favourite.

This thread has had meion exploring my late Coltrane, what i've got is limited to LPs of Transition, Ascension, and Jupiter (Variation). I noticed on amozon that Interstellar Space, Stellar Regions and Living Space are about to be issued on ShM- Cd, these seem pretty expensive at around £20 per disc. What's the deal with this format- something special or garbage ??

James Moody Feelin' it together Muse 1973 with Kenny Barron, Larry Ridley, Freddie Waits , Ignore Moody at your peril. Very strong album as is his other Muse offering Never Again !

I'm totally hooked on this years Tour. Having taken up road cycling myself last year, I cycled a Raid through the rain and cold in the Pyrenees in early june (Biarritz to Perpignan), we covered some of the climbs in this years Tour, Tourmalet, Aubisque, Portet de Aspet, . I really take my hat of to the amazing stamina of these guys, awesome. Love that man Voelcker, it'd be great if he won. Seems like a nice guy.

I'm sure I've seen it around at less than £10 recently. Might have been at good ol' Fopp. Great Tubby album ! Not worth it IMO , sound of the CD is poor as I'm sure was discussed here at the time of its release.

Jazz Journal
Clunky replied to JohnS's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I only became a JJ reader when Jazz Review folded a couple of years ago. I gave JJ a go for a while but it really wasn't what I was looking for. Endless reviews of public domain reissues and very limited coverage of anything new. I stopped subscribing about a year ago. I miss Jazz Review under Cook's leadership but not Jazz Journal. -
If these get a UK issue I might go for it. I don't have any of the albums included in the set - having little late-Coltrane in my collection. I prefer vinyl but these might do the trick nicely.

Seagulls of Kristiansund was my intro to Mal, Rouse, Woody Shaw and I was blown away , great album love it.

Another factor to consider would be effect a helmetless rider would have on other road users. If I saw a rider sans helmet I might stare in amazement at his/her stupidity and through distraction crash my car or bicycle. Alternatively I might give such a rider such a wide berth that I'd have a head on with the Number 23 coming the other direction.

Ace ! This one took quite some time to grow on me. It really is an ace . I've got a TOCJ CD, a Toshiba vinyl and a Liberty RVG pressing - I like it so much. FWIW the Liberty just edges the Toshiba but in reality the CD is also just fine sounding.

Jimmy Gourley Quartet "No More" Musica (France) - Parisian 1981 session with Lou Levy (and Dju Berry on 2 tracks)- decent session. Was Dju contracted to Concord ?

Record Store Price Stickers on Used LPs
Clunky replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Lots of 'Imported by Discovery Records' stickers on my LPs too ! likewise, I get bugged by the stickers Oxfam currently use, they charge top prices for the LPs they sell , whatever the condition and then stick 2 unforgiving stickers , one with the price the other for "Gift Aid". -
Received my copy of the Eddie Johnson CD today. I've had the LP for a few years so knew what to expect. The sound of the CD is really excellent , as ever Chuck's work on remixing pays dividends the sound which was excellent to start with packs a real punch. Highly recommended

Johnny Glasel- Jazz Session ( featuring Dick Garcia) ABC Paramount, decent if rather brief bopish date from the obscure ( at least to me) Glasel, Nice version of Ruby My Dear, recorded well before doing Monk versions was hip. Worth hearing. I got this edition a few weeks ago. It's a great date.

How long did it take you to swap the cables? If it was more than a minute or two, you can't remember what you heard (exactly) with the old interconnect. Human's "hearing memory" has been documented to be very poor if there is more than a few seconds between like sounds. If you can't A/B in seconds, you will have trouble distinguishing the differences. I took my time probably 3 minutes, the difference was so massive, it was also on an LP I knew very well indeed.

Cables do sound different. I had pair of cheaper interconnects from my TT to Phono amp and they really killed the sound, muffled and dull, improved immensely by a slightly dearer set of Nordost connects. I only trust my ears when it comes to HiFi upgrades.

can anyone provide a link to the Marshmallow Records web site- I can't find it.
