  1. same here
  2. That's right, keep at it. Didn't bother with the Mosaic set as I had a few of the sessions on vinyl
  3. This really is a great album, I've got both mono and stereo versions on vinyl. Excellent sound and beautiful playing
  4. Pity the Byas Town Hall tracks aren't in as good sound as the recent Diz/Bird set, I have this on LP with a few zany Ventura/Krupa tracks on the otherside ( pretty dull) as well as a rather hesitant Bill Coleman track
  5. Hadn't spotted this thread but wish I had, got the Basie Verve set from amazon.uk for £56 inc delivery which I thought was pretty good. First spin suggest sound is very much better that some of the LPs I have of some of the earlier sessions.
  6. I got a few of these earlier in the year from True Blue- they don't appear to be anything special in terms of vinyl weight , sonics or sleeve construction. All sound just fine (very quiet) but then again I've nothing to compare to, I went for Jaki Byard- Sunshine.. Jaki Byard- With Strings . Hal McKusick- Triple ..?
  7. Frank Foster A Blues ain't nothing but a trip - Live - Bingow Records ( 1979) Frank shows off his trane skills, nice set, never heard of the label , not listed by AMG
  8. Coleman Hawkins Get Happy Atlantic (UK)- somewhat pedestrian date ( 1958)- a little disappointing
  9. Paul Jeffrey-(self titled) - Mainstream- Not what I was expecting but a decent ( and thankfully brief) slab of jazz funk that works pretty well, Charles Kynard, Blue Mitchell and Joe Sample lend their talents. Konitz/Mangelsdorff- Art of Duo - Enja-
  10. I saw McCoy last night in Edinburgh, solid if not spectacular set, the progamme was well varied. High point for me was a romping version of " Moments Notice" and a largely solo performance of " I should care". Bassist was Reginal Veal (sp?) didn't catch th drummer's name. As I posted else where McCoy looked a little frail but he is 74 or so , however, his keyboard command was total and compelling.
  11. Last night McCoy Tyner , good set, McCoy has looked a little frail but played like an angel.
  12. Monk/Trane- Carnegie Hall- Mosaic- sounds excellent- haven't heard the CD so cant make any comparison. No obvious problems with groove cramming (given the length of each side)
  13. Just arrived from Mosiac ( took 24 hrs to get here) the Monk/Trane LP. My heart near stopped when I saw the engineering credit on the back stating " 24 bit/192 kHz digital transfer..." OMG.. A quick check to Mosaic site revealed this as a typo.
  14. Close listening to Mexican Green suggest to me, that this CD is perhaps the worse I have ever heard. The sound is not just boxy it's really badly compressed and distorted. The piano come across worst of all. You can hear all the instruments but is really only good for one listen through- I should have returned these two discs. Avoid
  15. anywhere in particular to start, I only know of his work throught the AEC Nessa box
  16. Dewey Redman - Living On The Edge This is a very decent session with Geri Allen. Dewey is in great form throughout this stylistically diverse set.
  17. thanks Chuck , I recalled seeing one of his sets and thinking the line up was a little odd ( four tromobones and organ is somewhat usual !!) . Is Wells on form on these?
  18. what's the Dicky Well's set like ?
  19. from this weekends score Billie Holiday- A Recital- Verve (original) AEC- Reese and the Smooth one- Affinity Mal Waldron - One entrance, many exits- Palo Alto Stephane Grapelli- With Bill Coleman - 2LP Festival- two very good 1973 sessions, one with Coleman- Daniel Humair drums on both
  20. Dave "Fingers" McKenna-Chiaroscuro- beautifully recorded Charles Mingus- My favourite quintet- Liberty- very nice session Omer Simeon- Decca ( Ace of Hearts comp) Lionel Hampton - Live- Fontana- 1954 session ( ?verve) has Nat Adderley playing but you'd never know it, Hampton hogs almost all the solos Mingus Dynasty- Chair in the sky- WEA
  21. when are going to see Ne Plus Ultra ?
  22. This weekend's haul at £2.50 a pop. Charles Mingus -Mingus 2 LP set - 1955 recordings with Eddie Bert etc Charles Mingus- PreBird- 80s reissue Charles Mingus-Scenes in the City- Affinity John Coltrane- Soultrane - Prestige OJC John Coltrane- On a Misty Morning - Prestige 2 LP Sonny Rollins- 1957 - Everest- curious boot one side has a Thad Jones group- no personnel listed Lester Bowie- The Great Pretender- ECM - somewhat different from his Nessa output !!
  23. just received 100% proof and Mexican Green, the latter sounds ok if a little boxy. 100% Proof isn't great sounding AM quality- I may the return this.
  24. wouldn't do that... read more here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=21883 ← hmm.....hadn't spotted that, I'll pass on this set . thanks Flurin
  25. european members might like to know that the euro version of the Elmo Hope title appears to be a non CC disc- no mention of it anywhere on the label - guess it's too long to fit the cactus stuff on !
