  1. The Criss is a soild effort with plenty to enjoy it's a quintet with guitar , bass, drums, piano/ organ . Very well recorded. The French studios really seem to have got their act together by this point (1963) There is an additional Criss session on the JiP "Saxophones from St Germain..." set. I wouldnt go out of my way to get hold of "Mr Blues pour..." as it really shares allot in common with other Criss session more readily available such as the Alladin 2CD set.
  2. agreed, see my earlier post, it's superficially appealing , but its lack of depth means only the absolutely grooviest of tracks (Mercy....) remain of interest after the first play through. This session convinced me of the superiority of Adderly's earlier work on Emarcy and Riverside.
  3. Stephane Grappelli JiP disc "Plays Cole Porter" featurs ogan and vioilin to great effect even including a duo track of these two unlikely bed fellows. Good album. Also features Jimmy Gourley, Daniel Humair and Eddy Louis
  4. might pick this up when "school days" swings by next week they'll be coming your direction Gary as the tour is organised by Birmingham jazz. If you havent hear "School days" prepare to be amazed. Nilsen-Love is a top drummer
  5. Same here. This has happened twice in the last purchases I made from Mosaic. Don't recall how much it added but it was pretty substantial. same here but this has nothing to do with Mosaic but the random way in which customs select out packages due duty. I have not had to pay any duty on packages of 5 CDs or less. So recent CJB set had Fred Anderson's Nessa disc added. Still represents good value in my estimation. Occasionally I have been lucky and seen much larger sets cruise through customs with duty unlevied. If Mosaic changed there $5 per disc policy it would dramatically cut the number of sets I buy.
  6. I really like the title track but otherwise I was very disappointed by this date For Soul jazz "Crash" by Burrell and Jack McDuff (Prestige 2LPs one 1 CD) is the business.
  7. these are proving quite hard to find , most are not now distributed in the UK and I have little luck with varoius online retailers. Even amazon.fr lists all of the series as being unavailable. i have ordered two peiffer discs, the second Hodeir and one other through amazon in Germany so fingers crossed. Any other European sources online for these. Incidently HMV in Edinbrgh had a copy of "Broken Wing" by Chet Baker (£6.99) when I was in the other day.
  8. This session immediately struck me as having a confluence of influences and yet sounding like nothing else I have heard. The first three tracks seem to acknowledge Sonny Rollins, Albert Ayler and Sun Ra in that order. The brief ballad opener is lke a welcoming statement along the lines of - Don't be afraid come in ....Track 2 "No. 2" is considerbaly longer than the stated 2 minutes and develops a real head of steam in the manner of Ayler but perhaps less hectoring than Albert could be. Hopkins is a monster on this track. Track 3 is a real gem in the manner of Ra's "Fate in a pleasant mood", tunes like Ankh and its varients spring to mind , the combination of dark summative flute playing over the astonishing percussion of the hubkaphone. Sound quality is good for the period if not quite RVG , it's quite dark sounding but it suits the music perfectly. Packaging up to Nessa high standards. Alpha plus very glad another new door has been opened up by Chuck. Thanks
  9. a number of good George Colligan's including "Small Room"
  10. anyone know if the DVD of Nemo is one of these specially restricted discs that can be played on multiregion players outside of the USA? My children would love this !!!!
  11. The only Lyon I have is "Burnt Offering" , how does that compare to this intriging set.
  12. Of the single discs the Pathe sessions really take some beating but for a deeper and better documented look the stunning Nessa set is every bit as good as JSngry and others have said. I've not had it long but it's a keeper and a grower.
  13. excellent
  14. The Clifford Jordan Camden 2CD set issued in the UK a few years ago is well worth tracking down. It was complied from 3 or 4 Muse LPs , although I am not sure if any of these were presented in their entirety.
  15. I have the monk "It Club" sessions in this edition, the sound is horrible compared to the more recent version. Can't think what they were thinking about adding reverb and white noise to this fine date.
  16. anyone know what this one is like?
  17. guess I was lucky with Airbourne, took 3 days for last item from Stamford to get to my front door. Mind you I was in at the time otherwise it might have been left on the doorstep given the comments above.
  18. see Jones to see a legend see Moran for something new and probably more exciting
  19. Navarro Wardell Gray ( lots of airshots) Tristano
  20. whilst its not quite the same thing leaving ordering a Mosaic until its on last chance is risky. I ordered one of the last Chico Hamilton sets and sweated 5 weeks for it arrive. By the time it did the set was OOP. Curse my luck that one of the discs was defective and Mosiac were unable to provide a replacement !!
  21. what can you do with "Good gracious" ?? these are great
  22. Just picked up these Willie "the Lion" Smith - Music on my mind Chet Baker- Broken Wing both pretty good, the Baker will have greater staying power but The Lion sounds excellent , not too flashy or overly exuberant, just a nice slice of quality stride piano ( but not much else). Recording quality of both is excellent.
  23. The Blue Moon sessions are nothing like the spare sound of the "New Dance " or "Scattered Clouds". It collects a scandinavian air shot that was his firts release I think ( sound poor really but adequate) ,he does a nice post Bird thing on some standards, the bulk of the Cd is from early 1960s and has a distict west coast feel to it. Lots of overdubs of various horns. Interesting but second rate really
  24. for any one who know the material on Eldridge set, how representative of the box are the "Roy and Diz" sessions from 1954.? I quite like these but am not sure I need several more hours of the same.
  25. this , really is astonishingly good value, good sound and some beefy performances made me wonder why I bothered with the Mosaic set !! Only jesting, but this is an excellent companion even if it doesn't shed really much extra light on the CJB. Some very strong alto solos presumably by Mr Quill.
