Given the worries over Stuff's box I was considering Johnny Hodges later verve box from Mosaic , given it's provenance it too might suddenly expire. I have some of the material "Side to Side" and the "Blues a Plenty " session (from the Webster 2-offer CD). These are both fine disc but suggest that the results might become quite formulaic if repeated over 6 CDs . How does the Hodges set stand up , is it formulaic or just plain fun spread across 6 CDs. any thoughts

Art Pepper's Complete Galaxy Recordings Box Set
Clunky replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I amn happy to have this set especially as courtesy of those Germans it only cost me £20 or there abouts. It is a bit repetitive in feeling and would not be worth spending much money on. A few single CDs such as "Straight Life" and "Winter Moon" and you would pretty much get the measure of this box. Sound is rather one dimensional thoughout. Not an essential box compared with Bill Evans on Riverside or Herbie Nichols Bluenote -
Ellman's Bauer thing is pretty strong, I like this disc so far , sound is acceptable , a little dark but good enough but certainly not the best

I orderd mine direct from Mosaic and reckon it still cost me less (allowing for postage and tax) than the Amazon Germany price (When ordering from the UK) Just started listening to set and it's clearly a good one. The Diz and Roy sessions have more presence and bass than the single Verve CD from 1995. tht'a the only session that I was familiar with. Oscar on Organ is indeed real Ice rink stuff but still acceptable in the main. The first string session on disc one isn't as saccharine as you might fear but I doubt it'll be played as much as the rest of the set.

I picked this up on your recommendation Gary. Like it so far , really pretty different from the only other one I have heard from this group "Secret Museum" , this new one seems altogether funkier if you know what I mean. Still listening.

I just picked up a couple of very cheap LPs (£2) of Red Rodney's from 1981 and 1982 on Electra Musician. (Spirit Within and Sprint) I can't play them yet as my new turntable isn't ready yet. Should I be excited or are these pretty routine, anyone know? I have very little Red other some sides with Parker and Chaloff, so I am certainly curious.

I have this one, it's really very much into the Strata East sound ,not bad but not especially memorable. Sound is fairly flat which doesn't help.

The new Horton is a trumpet plus piano trio set up with Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison and Matt Wilson. I think this is Hortons only FSNT release?

are these to be distributed outside of Germany ( i.e. to the UK) or must I bluff my way through amazon germany for the Kollers

Anyone have any thoughts regarding Dennis Budimir's Revelation LPs. I just picked "A second coming" but cant play it as my turntable just totally broke down. The store had two others by him also on Revelation. Looks interesting even if AMG gives it 2 stars without any further explanation.

CDs should be with you shortly ( anywhere between few days and 2 weeks , best guess!!!!)

Both Lightcaps are top drawer IMO, and the new Horton is really excellent highly recommended. I loved Mosh for Lovers initially but that hasnt lasted ,

I have a couple of Verve Spanish CDs, sound is fine but the packaging and Spanish liner notes are poor. Not sure if these discs are Spanish ones or not.

Sonic Temples is good but my only exposure to Blake so I cant say I know where he's coming from. I have ordered the Silver disc and another Hatology title courtesy of Jazzreview's promotion ( two for £12). I like what I have heard so far.

I have and greatly enjoy AU9002 Francesco Bearzatti "VIRUS" AU9001 Gianluca Petrella "X-RAY" the first features some electronica and sort of syn. voice in little bits but its mainly driven by the sax and drums- I have nothing else like this, it's very accessible despite its innovative sound. Xray is straighter freeish jazz with Petrella being Europes answer to the stunning Jeb Bishop

Have I missed something or will these Autumn releases be the first Conns to be issued this year?
-
Courtesy of BBC Radio 3 - Jazz on Three ,I have a number of excellent Brötzmann broadcasts. A great quartet with Joe McPhee from the Empty Bottle, the Chicago Tentet with William Parker guesting fromm 2001- Austria and a trio session recorded in London from 2002/3. I guess Jez must like his Brötzmann.

Recently picked up the new reissue of "Jazz Contemporary" Fresh sounds, it sounds great as well as a chance to hear Charles Davis at close quarters. How does his other time release "Showboat" stack up?

This is Colin's second Cd by this particular band, the music pretty and straight forward really. This CD has a palpable Scottish feeling throughout and works very nicely. It's played straight as I have mentioned but the tunes sparkle and can be hummed and it's really just good fun stuff. The line up is. O¹Donnell is a monster bassist watch out for him. He's young but has great timing and a huge tone. Wonderful. Colin Steele - Trumpet Julian Argüelles - Sax Dave Milligan - Piano Aidan O¹Donnell - Double Bass John Rae - Drums As for the best there is well. I am really pleased for Colin who deserves the credit but clearly end of year lists are highly subjective even as in this case is the result of votes from a dozen or so writers.

FREEFALL is much better than the reviewer seems to suggest IMO
