  1. Never heard of Klemmer, AMG suggest its early smooth jazz, this doesnt quite fit with Chuck's description. Anyone care to expand on what might be expected from this disc. thanks
  2. andrew hill anglo american big band broadcast on 30th MayBBC Radio3 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3coming.shtml
  3. Mines an old school nickname- no idea why It had something to do with JimmY Saville saying "Clunk click every trip" which wasnt an exhortation to drop acid but fasten your seatbelt.
  4. I am with Chuck on thsi one. This is a great board, I lurk more often than I post. What I would really like to see is more discussion of more recent and indeed current modern jazz. We need to support the current keepers of the flame be it The Bad Plus or Henry Threadgill or Lian Noble or indeed Organissimo !!!
  5. All of the Coltrane Atlantics have something special about them that brings them above most of the Prestige era Trane. This disc was the last I added to my collection(although i haven't added the date with Cherry or Bags as these don't appeal). Great tunes and some Dolphy what more could you want. Also accessible for neos afraid of the Impulse stuff. This is as good as the rest but for my money if you could only have one of the Atlantics it would be "Plays the blues"
  6. Fate in a Pleasant Mood/When Sun Comes Out." Cosmic Tones..'/'Art Forms.. Futuristic Sounds these are probably my favourite Ra's, some of it is just so bizarre, tracks like "Next stop mars" and "Calling Planet Earth" just make be laugh. I think Evidence has done the Ra legacy proud by its excellent releases, their production values are very high. I can't imagine many people being Ra completists- likely to highly frustrating and exceedingly expensive.
  7. Fredrik Nordstrom- Trio Live-Dragon Liam Noble- In the mean time- Basho Liam Noble- BBC Radio 3 broadcast David Binney-BBC Radio 3 broadcast
  8. Not having the Mosaic set, I really hope "Andrew!" and "Compulsion" see the light of day soon on CD. Votes above would suggest they are well worth it.
  9. Just ordered this disc, havent managed to listen to audio clips but judging by the posts above I sure I wont be disappointed.
  10. I will have to check out the Cabell sessions again.my very first post on the Old BNBB was about the scratchy sound he made. I got flamed instantly and life's not been the same since. I guess I can live with his sound but I am not wild about it or John Patton despite having all his recent BN CDs
  11. In the last few days Pee Wee Russell- Swinging with Pee Wee (Prestige) over-rated? Jimmy Woode- Conflict - Contemporary- excellent Larry Ochs- Neon Truth- good but repetitive James Muller- Carmel Jones- Jay Hawk (prestige) excellent Andrew Hill- Beautiful Day (Palmetto)- not as far out as I had expected Andrew Hill - Grass Roots- well inside the Hill tradition Cannonball Adderley - Mercy Mercy Mercy- very dull IMO
  12. I went for The Julius Watkins, fascinating to hear the french horn swing so well and as an added bonus mobley and Foster play very well indeed. Probably my favourite Mobley session along with his 10" on the Mosaic set. This disc got me into Tom Varner and thence into Ron Horton and then the Jazz Composers collective and Palmetto records. So i guess this set did a lot for my listening. The Salvador set is very fine and reallly alerted me as to how amazing Eddie Costa was.
  13. Love 'em all, but it's Basra all the way for me, lets face it they are great choices.
  14. Does Chuck's change of avatar mean that we can now buy the Warne Marsh , Nessa session?
  15. Melba Liston
  16. The River's alternates are fascinating but for my money the alternates on the Herbie Nichols set are just as interesting.
  17. Andrew Hill's "Lift every voice" is better than you can imagine from the line up. Vocals -....ughh......almost as bad as string sections...... In fact it swings and dances and is a real favorite of mine.
  18. I agree with Lon and like the Barron disc but would agree with others that "nOw Here this" or the Savoy sampler "Modern Windows Suite" are better. Another recent Barron reissue is on Dragon "SWedish American Venture", stuff from mid 60s to 80s with various Swedish lineups. Recommeded ahead of the bossa disc.
  19. Fieldwork's "Your life flashes" with Vijay Iyer is excellent robust tenor, piano, drum trio.
  20. Drew Gress - Spin & Drift (Premonition), Vandermark - Airports of Light (atavistic) Billy Bauer- Plectrist Matt Wilson- Humidity- Palmetto Fred Hersch- Village Vanguard Tina Brooks- Waiting Game
  21. On re listenening to this I was really struck by the drumming. I wasn't familiar with the line up and assumed that it was Tony Williams propelling the title track along. Joe Chambers sustains much of the groove of that piece. I would have thought that "Soothsayer" was BN title closest in feel if not structure to this one.
  22. This is a great jazz CD. Picked this up because I really enjoy Dave Kings playing with the Bad Plus. This is a different bag ,its a fairly intense set but with some superb ballads. I find myself at a loss to say what it's like, something of The Bloomdaddies but less funk, some of John Scofield's early BN stuff but with more passion. Anyone else?
  23. Must listen again to this one. From memory it wasnt nearly as outside as some BNBB posters suggested. A bit like Evolution in that respect.
  24. Freshsound have reissue the Dauntless title recently
  25. I first heard "Plaza de Toros" on a BN UK Organ compilation and had to hear some more, tried to get the best of.. CD that BN put out in the early 90s. When that failed I orderd up the Mosaic and never looked back. Young lead me back to Jimmy Smith to an extent and sideways to Big John Patton. I have a limited tolerance of B3 stuff as so much is pretty formulaic. Young on the other hand is the business even if his wifes singing is atonal.
