You`n` Me - Al Cohn and Zoot Sims (Emarcy)- this is a swinging performance and then some!!!! Daylight Express- Clark Terry- (Chess)-

Is this a reasonable place to start with AEC. ? I only have "A Jackson in your house/ Message to our folks" which is pretty entertaining if it werent for the poor audio quality. My Charly CD sounds if its been transfered badly off and poor LP !!! I really love "Snurdy..." ( for me the reissue of the yesr so far) but I guess this set is in a rather different bag. Mighty tempted to take up Chucks suggestion and pick this up with the Stitt Mosaic. Any final opinions about either set would be welcome.
-
I have this on a Candid CD, it is indeed a nice companion set for the Mosaic set by Shank
-
not that this will make a difference to my no brainer to buy this but.... what's the sound like ?? Is it more like the `47 Carnegie Hall or Fats/Bird at Birdland 1950 ?
-
Also ran for me would be "This years kisses" by Lester from 1956 , really emotional but non languid performance, touches me every time. From a much more recent record "Art/ " from Graphic by Bill McHenry has a similar effect.
-
surely not everything from Fresh sounds is illegitimate ??

Having just plucked up the courage to get Paypal specifically to get Eddie Costa's " House of Blue Lights" , I cannot understand why this album isn't better known or more widely available. It's simply stunning. This really should be made available everywhere B)

I have these three. Nobody has mentioned the Cooper/ Holman set. it's pretty good but undeniably just a notch behind the other two sets both of which are unmissable. Do consider the Cooper/ Holman set it has many fine moments are no duff ones ( unlike the Wilson). Mariano is in great form on many of the sides.

Wow wow wow. Where on earth did Uptown find this stuff, it seems extraordinary that material of this apparent importance could be overlooked. Did Chuck give any indication of release date? Not to divert or anything but all we can hope for now is some undiscovered Dick Twardzik to add to his meagre discography. As it stands Uptown have already substantially increased what's available by this guy.
-
which album ? never heard it
-
Chuck any more details about the unreleased Diz and Bird due from Uptown. This sounds very interesting.

Alabama by JC

I, Eye, Aye.. from 1972 is a very nice date, loads of energy which is what Kirk was all about for me.
-
Bud Shank- Mosaic disc One Jack Monterose- Pacific ( forget the title) Lou Donalson- Natural Soul- I really liked this which surprised me Eminent JJ Johnson Vol2 _ great session but my copy has a defect in the 5th track.

Colemans Atlantics seem to have been reissued in a number edition (at least in the UK). I am sorry but I cant really pass much comment on their comparative sonic weaknesses as all I own are late 80s or early 90 s masterings . All are fine and recommended without hesitation , packaged in jewel cases. I think they look better than those "recycled toilet roll" card covers the last reissues came in.

Binkys Beam just kills me every time. It's certainly a superb recording and I am not really wildly into McLaughlin ( through lack of exposure rather than dislike)
-
Eddie Costa "House of blue lights"- (Dot) wowwwww !!! DickTwardzik/ Russ Freeman-"Trio" (TOCJ) ditto Chet Baker with Dick Tward... (Emarcy) Charlie Parker Boston 1952 (Uptown) Allen Eager " In the land of.." (Uptown) Drew Gress-" Spin and drift"
-
AMG seems to rate the recording quality very poorly, perhaps what why it's not been out yet on CD
-
Great thread- spurred on by the above I finally took the plunge got PayPal and ordered TRIO and Eddie Costa's "House of Blue Lights" from Early Records. Wow and double wow. Amazing service , speed and simply incredible music on these two discs.
-
the pepper Galaxy set does include some AH releases , New York Album, Artworks and So In Love. The writing on my bargain set from Zweitausendiens is so small that there be others but it hurts my eyes checking
-
That's good news. "Dig it" is excellent . I think Ted Brown was also on a few tracks on the RCA france issued "Sounds of Suprise"- released at much the same time as "Dig It". Both great, great Konitz.
-
All of the 58 studio and most of th Jazz plaza session were on a US Sony Legacy CD from the early nineties called I think "Stella by starlight - 58 sessions" or something like that. Not sure if this is still available The studio sessions are amongst my favourite miles sessions which is saying something!!!
-
Hep's "Band Box Shuffle" by Bennie Moten (2CD ) is in excellent sound. They also do some good new recordings by people such as Herb Geller and Jessica Williams

This was one of the first Ellington's I heard and as per all the above it is beyond reproach. His various suites and extended works of his latter years are just a marvel. He really kept up to date his music timeless. Whilst the Blanton Webster band was indeed very special stuff like this and "Such Sweet thunder" and "Latin American Suite" get loads more play time.
