  1. Evan parker, John Edwards, and John Russell - -----Walthamstow Moon (’61 revisted)’ ------(Byrdout)
  2. Yosuke Yamashita/ Bennie Wallace-------Brilliant Corners------(Denon) I'm totally unfamiliar with Wallace . He tries gamely especially on the title track and comes across like someone who likes a challenge even if it means public humiliation occasionally- like here. Elsewhere the two protagonists dance around the Monk related themes. Yamashita always in total command. Wallace does his best and it makes for more than decent session IMO.
  3. Hod O'Brien ----------Bits and pieces-------(Uptown) 1982 session finds O'Brien in a lush and romantic mood. I was expecting something more boppish but his playing here reminds me of Red Garland. Although he's a name I've known for years I'll need to dig out other sessions , such as the one with Warne Marsh to get my head around his style .
  4. That's good to know.
  5. Good to read that I'm not the only one hear something Ellingtonia in the music. That excellent review makes we want to play the discs all over again.
  6. Konstrukt with Joe McPhee ------Babylon----------- (Roartario) Some relaxing music for a Saturday morning to ease the pain .
  7. This disc has had plenty of spins in my house (and car!) over the past month. It's a 'piano in the background' kind of affair and allows the multifaceted Red demonstrate mastery of his orchestra. Good music, as the Duke himself surely would have said
  8. Yosuke Yamashita----------Chiasma---------(MPS) Japan K2HD (fwiw) Tense gig especially when Akira Sakata lets rip.
  9. Ted Brown Quartet.-------Live at Trumpets-------(Cadence jazz records) Two dates from 2006 and 2010 from the evergreen Tristanite tenor man. Jon Easton plays piano Lennie would have been proud of and Mr Brown is his laid back and inventive usual self. No surprises in tune choices. Only pity is none of Brown's own compositions are included. Sound quality is decent enough, suitably informal with the sound of the sax a bit too recessed. Cranking up the volume does the trick. Anyone who has followed Ted's catalog of recordings grow over the years will enjoy this I'm sure. I for one really adore his work and can never get enough of his playing. On a down note however the liner notes appear to imply that he is no longer performing.
  10. I got notification from Mosaic that my order of the James P Johnson set it ready to ship
  11. Agreed. I can't stand or understand all this egocentric moaning. Give them a break !!
  12. I like that Zoot album., even Buddy Rich is ok!!
  13. New arrival my first David Murray in a very long time. Murray/ Geri Allen/ Carrington ---Perfection----(Motema)
  14. I'm still so shocked by this sad news . I've been playing her music all weekend.
  15. Roscoe Mitchell --------The day and the night--------(dizim) fine trio date from 1996 with Favors and Cleaver. I don't have any other releases on this German label. Highly recommended That's a great disc, must dig it out
  16. Art Ensemble of Chicago--------People in sorrow--------(nessa) I could do with Chuck reissuing "Les Stances a Sophie" (on LP. ?) to join this in my collection.
  17. Extremely sad news to hear. I thought she was a wonderful musician. I was lucky enough to see her play with Tom Bancroft's Orchestra Interrupto ( broadcast on Jazz on 3). I'm truly shocked by this. My thoughts to her family and friends ,RIP.
  18. May 12th 1960 is the date given in that issue.
  19. My copy arrived today and I'd agree 100% , solid session and very enjoyable but it's no Rosetta stone for sure. Well worth it. NP Binker & Moses---------Journey to the moutain of forever--------(Gearbox) LP 2 these guys are new to me (although they've release previously on gearbox ) No less than Evan Parker guests on the second LP. Good meeting of minds. Nothing earth shattering but solid modern jazz with strong rhythmic sensibilities.
  20. The Morgan material was released on CD (Minor Strain) in the late 80s /early 90s with tracks by Thad Jones . The latter IIRC were reissued in improved sound on the Thad Mosaic box.
  21. Listened to disc one on repeat last night. Once again I'm simply blown away by Roscoe's extraordinary musical vision. I found the comments above plus a you tube video helpful in working out who it's playing what. It always helps me to visualise the musicians with music of this nature. I'll move onto disc two today. This is a major piece of work. Congratulations to all.
  22. Today- not withstanding complaints from the family .... alexander hawkins --- Unit(e) olie brice-----of tides roscoe mitchell---- Bells for the South side all excellent !
  23. That's Bristol., Ingerland etc That could have been Scotland only Scotland is cooler (and wetter) .
  24. Not better, best ?
  25. Arrived yesterday. This'll take time to digest. Only annoyance so far is that it's hard to work out who is playing on each track. Understatement to say that the liner notes do not make it easy to figure this out for half the tracks !
