  1. I've not listened to his music in a decade. I recall being thrilled at first but then dare I say it, bored . I was probably guilty of the same problem with David Murray, listening to him too much and to the exclusion of other music. I've successfully revisited Murray so I ought to put the effort in and try KVM again. I will listen to this interview and see if that makes a connection with me .
  2. I'm very late I I know but it's all too sad to hear of his passing at such a young age. He was a great contributor. RIP
  3. I found it to be more approachable than some Braxton. Despite having at least 20 or so Braxton releases I respect his music more than I like it. I rarely seem to understand him. the bottom line is that I think too rarely I make an emotional connection to his music. My fault rather than his.
  4. Anthony Braxton Quartet----------Jazz na fabrica--------(Selo sesc) Brazil , August 2014
  5. It must have been the mood I was in, but I recall being underwhelmed when I saw the Necks - probably about 10 years ago. Tedious - would sum up my experience. Perhaps I should give their music a second chance.
  6. I'll need to dig it out as I've not played it in a while. Thanks for posting this.
  7. Not sure how I missed this, he was a major contributor to jazz. RIP
  8. Art was pretty timeless which is part of his appeal.
  9. It really is a wonderful set. Excellent balance of tracks leading to the impression of one masterpiece followed by another. Perhaps that's a tad too strong but it's not a set many are likely to regret. Excellent sound too.
  10. Martial Solal's collaborations with Konitz are always special as indeed as was his working relationship earlier in his career with Lucky Thompson. Solal's playing and inventiveness is never less than excellent. He's still going strong, the recent duet release with Dave Liebman is very fine.
  11. I also listing to the studio recordings. Good sound, not sure if it's improved to previous issues - i'd need to check but can't really be bothered. Just enjoying the music and the fact that this is a fully authorised release.
  12. I'm looking forward to hearing this. I've been playing quite a bit of Roscoe's music either as part of the AEC or his own output. His productivity seems incredible, even more so given the diversity of the music on offer. I was thinking that he's having a wonderful purple patch but the reality is that I've never heard anything by him that wasn't riveting. I'm hoping that one day I'll see him live.
  13. Rosco Mitchell with Yuganaut-------Four ways--------(nessa) played this all the way through twice. It's wonderful to soak the music up with minimal distractions. Great release and unlike other Roscoe discs.
  14. I've the Gil Evans Svengali LP in quad and stereo editions. I can't tell the difference on playback on my stereo.
  15. Thanks to all.
  16. Thanks Dan, enjoying my day listening to plenty of jazz...
  17. Jimmy Lyons/ Andrew Cyrille---------Burnt Offering---------( Black Saint IT) i had forgotten just how fine this session was. The two of them are completely instep with each other.
  18. Billy Bang holds a very special place in my heart. He was the first modern jazz musician I heard live. Frank Lowe, Sirone and Dennis Charles completed the band. I was totally captivated by the whole thing Bang , Lowe , I can still recall the sense of excitement at hearing something really new that I immediately connected with. Live at Carlos 1 was the current release. Although totally different from the band I'd heard the disc played on repeat for months. Rainbow Gladiator and Valve No 10 are also highly recommended. The later release is a reasonable representation of the band I'd heard live . A live Bang release would be greatly welcomed.
  19. A trio of new Intakt releases arrived today , Tom Rainey Obbligato Float Upstream, Alexander Hawkins_Elaine Mitchener Uproot, Borderlands Trio Asteroidea. Float Upstream presents standards ( all by one track) . Pretty interesting take on some very well worn tunes such as What's new or Stella by Starlight. Impressedd
  20. This was recommended listening ( I think originally Larry Kart's suggestion). I was listening to this just yesterday. RIP
  21. Johny Glasel-----Jazz session ------( ABC Paramount) trumpet/guitar/bass & drums. A very fine and undervalued session which has some real fire and grace. The little known Glasel sounds like a more virile version of Chet.
  22. King Oliver------Okeh sessions------(EMI) this was the first jazz LP ( other than a multi artist compilation) . I found these poor transfers pretty hard to listen to.

I recall that this thread was my go-to for several years. Many fine recommendations buried in this thread.
  24. This is a pretty good Konitz disc. There's no sense of him running out of puff. I recall a recent Konitz release where he really did sound tired but here that's not the case. If you love Lee well worth it. Beginners look elsewhere.
  25. Kenny Dorham ---------Whistle Stop-----------(BN Liberty)
