WILLEM BREUKER KOLLEKTIEF –--- LIVE IN BERLIN----(Bvhaast)
Free clown jazz from Holland- they seem to know what they're doing. Interestingly different.
First 78 in about a month. I've been too busy playing LPs to lift the dust cover off my Lenco ( to play shellac)
Today's find, ok I love Hawk so this counts as far as I'm concerned
Coleman Hawkins --------Bean and the Boys/ Cocktails for two--------(Sonora) 1946 rec.
Bean with Maxwell Roach , Milton Jackson et al.... ....oh and Fats N...... I couldn't resist it.
Paris Reunion Band ----- for klook--------(Sonet)
Somehow less than the sum of its parts. It's not bad in fact it's pretty good but I guess I'd expect more from a band with such a star line up.
Other than the original US or UK LP issues, perhaps.
I'd guess UK originals could be better if mint. My experience of near mint US EmArcy pressings has been pretty mixed, I've largely concluded that they are quite noisy. I'm sure nice Japanese pressings would be just as good. Plenty of choice for sure.
The Brown / Roach set is as good as you'd expect. Sound wise I'd find it hard to imagine that there're better editions to be found. The vinyl is flawless.
Charles Mingus presents Charles Mingus---------(Candid) DG stereo original sounding several miles better than the CD edition.
IIRC the Mosaic used the mono tapes as the original unadulterated stereos had been lost. Great album.
This looks like it might have potential for me. I've long loved RRP but the CD sounds a little dull. It couples RRP with Edith but the other sets are unknown to me.
Goran Kajfes -----the reason why Vol. 1------(Headspin)
Cool orchestra . Tubeway army meet Gil Evans. I'll need to see how long this holds up but .... I like
All good - but why boots, according to you?
Boot might be off the mark but wasn't BYG a bit shady in it's dealing with the artists. These don't sound like needle drops but I gather some reissues of this material are. Good music none the less
Is that one you got from that shop we discussed? Very nice! This might be even lesser seen than most of the others.
That's the one. I was walking out the door empty handed when I glanced up at the wall display....hey presto.
I picked up the Rufus, Jazz Comp Orch and the Ted Curson at the same time. I left very pleased it was raining heavily had been the only reason I sought out the shop in the first instance!
Sounds like a great find. I'm slumming it with a different Fontana edition of Touching but do have Tears For Dolphy in this series
Steve Lacy--- Moon----(Affinity)
Sunny Murray----An even break ---(Affinity)
Archie Shepp--- Yasmina/ A Black woman ---(Affinity)
Ok, these are probably boots of boots ( I think ) but sound ok and clean enough to hear the music. All 3 bought yesterday for £8 seemed reasonable. BYG originals are hard(ish) to find and can sound pretty poor in my experience. Interesting music all worth hearing.
Nick Brignola Sextet-------------Baritone Madness-----------(Beehive)
Good line up with Ted Curson, Roy Haynes, Pepper Adams , Dave Holland and Derek Smith. Standard hard-bop but well played and recorded.
I don't know his own music but have enjoyed his contributions to Billy Bang and William Parker discs I have greatly enjoyed. On Carlos 1 with Bang the whole band has a great groove. That disc was IIRC the very first contemporary jazz disc I ever bought ( i.e. not a reissue )
