  1. I heartily recommend It's About Time!, a trio EP(!) from 2008, with guitarist Cary DeNigris and bassist Paul Ramsey. i was listening to some of his recordings with Dolphy the other day and thinking about what a unique sound that group had. He was such a crisp, swinging and melodic drummer and helped in the development of a lot of musicians over his long career. Thank you for the music, Mr. Hamilton. Paul Ramsey is a masterful electric bassist. Cary DeNigris I heard first with Ronald Shannon Jackson (When Colors Play and Texas), and both he and saxophonist Eric Person then joined Chico Hamilton's group and made quite a few very fine recordings (for example, Trio on Soul Note, which is Chico with Cary DeNigris and Eric Person).
  2. The upcoming week looks strong: Monday night has Ari Hoenig, featuring Shai Maestro on piano. Tuesday night features Logan Richardson, who reappears as a sideman on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday night features Noah Preminger, with Frank Kimbrough. Friday and Saturday, Freddie Redd appears. Friday night, Don Friedman also appears as a sideman immediately before Freddie Redd, and the late night set on Saturday is Stacey Dillard's Brooklyn Circle.
  3. George Adams with Jimmy Knepper, Hugh Lawson and Dannie Richmond, I like that group.
  4. Francisco Mela is one fantastic drummer. Last night I was frustrated by a shaky audio feed for the first set, until George Garzone joined Melissa Aldana's trio, then it cleared up. I enjoyed his playing, but the last two songs of the second set, back with the trio were the killer performances of the evening.
  5. Thanks for the reminder; I'm been wanting more late Bechet, so I picked up this Tresors set for a pittance on amazon (less than $8).
  6. That is true, the other albums are better than the VV material, which is poorly recorded in my opinion.
  7. I also received notice of shipment.
  8. I see the moderator replaced a better and more thorough message. Bummer. I came here to praise the original message. Not sure what you mean? Prestige 7339 is a 2 LP Gildo Mahones set; Prestige 7341-7344 are all double LP reissue sets.
  9. The new Fantasy era Prestiges are most of the releases in the 10,000 series.
  10. So I'd always assumed that those Prestige two-fer reissues in the 70s were done after Fantasy owned them, but before the OJC identity had been created. I guess I was mistaken. Thanks for clarifying. Prestige released the original twofer reissues in the sixties. But most of the Prestige twofers were produced by Fantasy in the Mid to late 1970s. OJCs came after the twofers, if I recall correctly.
  11. Prestige didn't "go under," it stayed independent a half dozen years longer than Blue Note did, and also continued releasing records after its acquisition by Fantasy.
  12. I don't usually stay up that late, but this is a pretty good week at the club. I wish I could be there in person this week. Monday night, I heard a set by Ari Hoenig with Jean Michel Pilc. Last night, a set by the Frank Lacy, Stacey Dillard, Theo Hill, Josh Evans regular Tuesday night group. Wednesday and Thursday feature Brian Charette's Organ Sextet with Mike DiRubbo and John Ellis. Friday and Saturday feature Melissa Aldana with Francisco Mela on drums.
  13. Amazon often refunds part of the pre-order price based on competitor prices and in this case they reduced the price by $1.99 after shipment.
  14. For the first time in a couple of weeks, the broadcast is back to working perfectly again--HD video and a clean and uninterrupted sonic feed.
  15. Well worth hearing. I was reading about her, listening to some tracks, and ordered her CD.
  16. Caroline Davis at Scat Jazz, December 26.
  17. Wes Montgomery, Movin', The Complete Verve Recordings (Hip O Select)--discs 1 and 2 yesterday, disc 3 today.
  18. Last night, Shelley Carroll at Scat Jazz in Fort Worth.
  19. You'll just have to bite the bullet and pay. Worth every penny and then some.
  20. You will be thanking Big Jim soon.
  21. I would love to have been there; the CD is excellent.
  22. His last 13 (!) CDs, released since 2006, are all available on cdbaby.com.
  23. He had 2 new CDs (Euphoric and Revelation) released in 2011. His later years were extremely prolific for recordings. I saw him at Drom in October of 2012. He was only able to play about half the set. About 15 years previously when I heard him at the Knitting Factory, he was still in prime form.
  24. Not every state. Only states where Amazon has a physical presence (like a distribution center) can require it to collect sales tax.
  25. Joe Diorio, Solo Guitar. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FMH8GW/ref=dm_ws_ps_cdp?ie=UTF8&qid=1385473003&s=music&sr=1-2
