  1. Is that the 1944 concert, with Jacquet, McVea, Cole & co? MG Actually, it's Willie Smith, Charlie Ventura, Illinois Jacquet, Howard McGhee, Joe Guy, Red Callendar, Garland Finney (piano) and Ulysses Livingston (drums), on How High the Moon and Lady Be Good. Apparently, the rights to this issue was retained by Stinson Records. I'm not sure if this has subsequently been reissued (I don't have the JATP box set); I've never heard it before.
  2. I've seen him at least a dozen times--with Greg Osby, with his own group, with Francisco Mela; it was worthwhile every single time.
  3. The blues album is good, in my opinion. The guitarist is not really a blues guitarist, but he's not "cheesy"; he seemed like a fine player when I saw the band at the Vanguard for several sets.
  4. An excellent choice.
  5. Jazz at the Philharmonic (Stinson 10 inch) Laurindo Almeida--Concert Creations for Guitar (Capitol 10 inch)
  6. Same here, very convenient and never a problem so far.
  7. Prestige First Sessions, volume 1 (Don Lanphere, Fats Navarro, Leo Parker, Al Haig). http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-First-Sessions-Vol-1/dp/B000000ZDL/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1285602611&sr=1-1 Prestige First Sessions, volume 3 (Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Red Rodney, Bennie Green). http://www.amazon.com/Prestige-First-Sessions-Vol-3/dp/B000000ZDN/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1285602611&sr=1-2 (Volume 2 of this series is Sonny Stitt material duplicated in the Stitt's Bits Box). The Chronological Lucky Thompson, 1944-47. The Chronological Russell Jacquet, 1945-49. The Chronological Dodo Marmarosa, 1946-50. 10. Amalia Rodriguez, Sings Fado, Sings Flamenco (Angel 10 inch). The photo of Amalia on the back of the record is by William Savory. Jazz at the Philharmonic, volume 14 (Mercury 10 inch). Jimmy Smith, Home Cookin' (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white, RVG) Gustavo Zepoll--Concert Guitar (Cook, 10 inch)
  11. Marc Ribot at the Kessler Theater in Oak Cliff. Nice venue. He played a short set of solo guitar pieces, then performed his score to Chaplin's The Kid, while the film played. The score was quite enjoyable.
  12. John Coltrane--Ascension (edition II) (Impulse, orange and black) Shirley Scott--For Members Only (Impulse, red and black)
  13. Horace Silver Doin' the Thing at the VillageGate (Blue Note NY USA) The Three Sounds-- Here We Come (Blue Note NY USA)
  14. You should play the records at varied speeds--33 and 1/3, 27, 58, 78, 89, 11, until you've covered a couple of thousand miles of grooves, then after that you can go any speed you want.
  15. On Columbia, I would get original six eye or two eye versions. These sound great. Be patient and you should be able to find them over time at reasonable prices.
  16. I've even heard Art Blakey right in front of me.
  17. The copy of Ride Red Ride that I recently acquired has a number of autographs on it. Two are by musicians who appear on the LP--Cozy Cole and Buster Bailey. There are a few more that are recognizable--Gene Ramey, Hal Singer, and Sol Yaged. And three more names that I'm not familiar with: Al Williams, Joly Rae (?), and Freddy Boute (a drummer? Since he drew a drum set underneath his signature).
  18. Red Allen--Ride Red Ride in Hi Fi (RCA) Freddie McCoy --Peas 'N Rice (Prestige, blue label)
  19. Herbie Hancock--The Prisoner (Blue Note, Liberty blue and white)

    Mark Turner

I've seen him live a couple of times. With Kurt Rosenwinkel--I quite enjoyed their partnership. With Omar Avital--this was more of a traditional type of jazz group and I didn't like him as much in this context.
