  1. Ben Webster--Sophisticated Lady (Verve) Jazz West Coast Volume 5 (World Pacific)
  2. Nick Moss and the Flip Tops at Pearl on Commerce. Very good guitarist and band, he saved the best song for the end of the second set; modest sized audience of 30 or so. Looking forward to seeing Michael Burks again here, and to seeing Janiva Magness, both at Pearl in about a month.
  3. Thread on Henry Threadgill.
  4. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie--Bird and Diz (Verve) Dizzy Gillespie Live with the Mitchell-Ruff Duo (Book of the Month Club)
  5. I recall seeing McCoy Tyner on the show also, back in that approximate timeframe.
  6. He is the tenor player with Tom Harrell, and is on Harrell's last several fine releases on High Note.
  7. His releases on Concord are also worthy.
  8. Baby Lips--Live at Minton's in 1941, recorded thanks to Jerry Newman--Electrifying and jaw dropping trumpet from Hot Lips Page.
  9. Sweets, Lips and Lots of Jazz (Xanadu)--Jerry Newman recordings. Both Sides of Tony Scott (RCA black dog).
  10. Sam Price and His Kay Cee Stompers--Barrellhouse Boogie Woogie and the Blues (Concert Hall 10 inch)--Nice session with Pete Brown, Vic Dickenson, Milt Hinton and Cozy Cole. Jaki Byard--Freedom Together (Prestige, blue label)
  11. I found a used copy of this one yesterday--you are right, it is good. How's the other Harry Whitaker on Smalls?
  12. Yes, I just ordered one from Newbury for $1.99, as I only had For Basie.
  13. I'm not at home to check, but isn't the Roy Eldridge a 2 CD set?
  14. The Peter Bernstein (with Richard Wyands and Jimmy Cobb) looks interesting. I don't have any of his leader CDs, but he has always been solid in the the various live performances I've seen (for example, paired with Kurt Rosenwinkel, in Ray Appleton's Wes Montgomery tribute band, with Lonnie Smith, and others), he seems to be the first call mainstream guitarist in New York.
  15. Japanese Folk Song on Straight No Chaser is one of my favorite Monk performances on Columbia.
  16. Shirley Scott/Stanley Turrentine--Soul Shoutin' (Prestige, blue label) That's a cool Eric Kloss LP. I'll have to dig that out. Yes, indeed, on the majority of the tracks, backed Jaki Byard, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson.
  17. There's a nice interview of Ahmad Jamal on allaboutjazz.com right now. Among other things, he says that Idris Muhammad has retired from music.
  18. The Gerry Mulligan Song Book, Volume 1 (World Pacific) Eric Kloss--Grits 'N Gravy (Prestige, blue label)
  19. Jimmy Smith--Softly as in a Morning Breeze (Blue Note, NY USA)
  20. I agree that the Manu Katche is not as interesting as his prior release. I was disappointed--I didn't care for it, for the most part. Similarly, the Terje Rypdal disappointed me as well. There were a few tracks I liked (none of the ones with the big band), but not many.
  21. From the ABA Journal: Yankees owner George Steinbrenner may have saved his heirs as much as $600 million in estate taxes by dying in 2010. The estate tax expired in 2009, and a new one doesn’t take effect until 2011, when heirs will be taxed at a top rate of 55 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) and the Associated Press. Steinbrenner’s net worth has been estimated at $1.15 billion, and dying in 2010 rather than 2011 could amount to a $600 million savings for his heirs, the Wall Street Journal says.
  22. More Newport shows added: Newport Jazz Festival, 7/3/64 As promised, we released an entire day's worth of music from the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival yesterday. Highlights include a Stan Getz Quartet performance of classic swing and bossa nova that also features appearances by Chet Baker and Astrud Gilberto; some big band fireworks with Count Basie and His Orchestra; a boogie-woogie infused set from the timelessly hip Mose Allison; an uplifting show from the queen of gospel-meets-jazz-meets-Chuck-Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe; and some trippy jazz from the George Russell Sextet. Head on over to each page to download the set and/or stream the entire day of music on this playlist.
  23. For anyone in Dallas-Fort Worth, there's a nice copy of this LP (the Clef version) residing (at least as of a day or so ago, and it's inexplicably been there for weeks) at the HPB on Northwest Highway for $10.
  24. I have the LP; I've never seen a CD reissue. Billie's Bounce is a full side long and is very good, the best track on the album.
  25. Jay Peters is on one of Gene Shaw's Argo LPs, Debut in Blues.
