  1. I guess Agg blue it off, man.
  2. Didn't couw post a pic of himself (with a record sleeve on his head, IIRC) a while back? Is it on the "show us yer face" thread? Just wondering..... Edit: I guess that could have been fake, but I tend to trust (perhaps foolishly) that people are being truthful here. Either way, I see on your profiles you both have 5 star ratings, and that's good enough for me!
  3. Careful not to spill on your just-ironed shirt.
  4. Indeed! That one and one called "The Burn Brigade" with Brignola, Cecil Payne and Ronnie Cuber! There was a period of several years when I was almost exclusively playing baritone, and those were two of my favorite sides (I still like them, but I don't spin vinyl very often). Another favorite player is Bruce Johnstone. In addition to playing with Woody Herman and Maynard Ferguson's bands in the '70s, he did a couple of small-group funk records as part of a band called "New York Mary". Glenn is being a bit modest. He is excellent on all the saxophones (and bass clarinet), and was featured on bari with Maynard's band for quite a while. You should hear him play high notes on the trumpet, too! Do you still have opportunities to do that, Glenn? I was glad when Maynard's Live at Jimmy's came out on CD. That featured some great Bruce Johnstone. Also nice to hear Scott Robinson mentioned- he also plays an amazing array of instruments.
  5. I know what you mean. I installed a rain gutter over the back steps during a powerful buzz yesterday. Unfortunately, it was the wrong house. The owner was appreciative though, despite the 40 degree slant on the gutter. Which was nothing compared to the 90 degree slant of MoGrubb.

  7. There's reason to celebrate a bit. The demise of the board was imminent on "Black Tuesday", today things look much brighter. :rsmile:
  8. They are both very good. I do like the piano-less context of 2 Horns, it creates some nice open space. Of course, Cannonball is on Blue Spring. Hmmm....... I just checked at Amazon- if you order from the private sellers you can get BS for as little as $5.79 and 2 Horns for as little as $8.29 (plus shipping). Surely the budget will bear that?
  9. Last day of classes today, almost time for the big holiday break (after finals week and a few meetings next week). Looking forward to some time off! Enjoy your weekend everyone!
  10. Pepper had many great moments on the Thad & Mel recordings. Also loved his contribution to Lee Morgan's "The Cooker", and the things he did w/Jimmy Knepper. Another great side previously discussed was Pepper's "Encounter". Also love the other bari players mentioned. Different styles for different moods, it's all good!
  11. Hey, I'm a fugitive from reality, and you can kiss my "Harry O".
  12. 1) Jim's had it, board is toast 2) Members unite, send major bread and moral support 3) Board gets reprieve, lives to fight another day 4) Some members don't like each other but call (temporary) truce 5) Epilogue: everything is beautiful once again A Quinn Martin Production
  13. It's in Eb like an alto, but deep like a tenor. You'd be surprised how many "foo-foo" alto players sound like real men on bari. But that Eb thing...that's weird. It's a Bb & C world, and everybody else is just living in it. But the ones who strike hard in Eb strike REALLY hard, so maybe it's a trap that'll either fuck you up or set you all the way free, I don't know. But Eb....man...I can't think right in Eb. Eb tunes lay well for us bass-cleffers. Bird tunes are in an excellent range. Plus I can play an Eb part by just changing the clef to bass and adding a couple accidentals. Clifford's (and other Bb) tunes are usually too low/high and need to be transposed up a fourth or so. Joy Spring is fun to blow over, but the head is a nightmare on trombone. Too low to effectively cop all the ornamentations, but too high if you 8VA it.
  14. Just got this in the mail today. Great side, thanks to Bol and the others for their recommendation! I've discovered so much great music because of this board. Glad it's not going anywhere just yet!
  15. I'm just glad he gave us "The Duke" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" to play and listen to. Both great tunes.
  16. Eddie De Haas is also on Chris Connor's album, "Chris in person", which was done at the Village Vanguard. Hard to imagine a musician who's played the VV being regarded as unknown in a jazz context. The other members of the band were Kenny Burrell, Bill Rubenstein and Lex Humphreys. MG Eddie De Haas is all over the place if you start looking a bit closer! Like for instance he's on the three Steeplechase Vonski albums that I'm playing this afternoon! (And no, not Vonski + yurepean pick-up band but Jodie Christian, Wilbur Campbell and De Haas.) One would expect from a site providing "general overview" such as AMG that they indeed realize such things... but then I guess the individuals who actually are writing up the short texts on albums don't exaclty have that greater perspective that would be nice to see on such a site... I worked with Eddie (as well as Wilbur and Jodie) a lot when I lived in Chicago. Eddie is a great player and a very cool guy. I wonder how he's doing?
  17. "It put the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again!!!"
  18. The best way to make it stop is by refusing to acknowledge it.
  19. And then later on he can work at Domino's.
  20. It's been nice to see some members who have been MIA lately come out to support the cause.
  21. Hmmmmmmmm...................
  22. Wow, nice lineup! Do you know what kind of group Slide is performing with?
  23. Have you tried flowers? Candy? A bottle of wine? A moonlit walk?
