  1. I've been looking forward to this one for a long time, and it is excellent! A very hard swingin' band, most of the credit going to Jake MF Hanna. Great soloists and great charts- Woody's band had a sound all its own. They really managed to carve out some space for themselves in a world dominated by Duke and Basie. EDIT: I have to say that beside the obvious solo heroes like Sal Nistico and Phil Wilson you HAVE to appreciate Bill Chase's great lead trumpet work and the writing of Nat Pierce, Bill Holman, Bob Hammer, Ralph Burns, Neil Hefti and Bill Chase. YOWSAH!
  2. I've always liked Atlantis. One of my favorite McCoys from that era.
  3. My Woody came today! (haven't been able to say THAT for awhile! )
  4. 7appy 4irthday!
  5. Happy birthday, Patricia!
  6. I love that chain. There's one in Tallahassee.
  7. "Home again, home again, jiggidy-jig! Gooood Evening, J.M.!" Safe travels. Better things ahead! We'll look forward to your return.
  8. Ambitous, yes. Looks very interesting!
  9. Just got my shipping notification- Woody has left the building!
  10. Or at the very least, a heart-on.
  11. Yes, HB, Nate! And Larry, you are correct, sir! "Rack Of Ages"! (with apologies to the ladies of the board )
  12. I should do that. I definitely could use some hotail.
  13. I've worked with a lot of mostly college-age students over the years, and I've discovered a couple things in recent times: 1) They are downloading music constantly and not buying many CDs anymore. When I ask them about this, they act all sheepish and say that they plan to purchase a CD copy of things that they like, but I know that most of the time this isn't happening. I don't let them burn my CDs, but I know they just go elsewhere and seldom pay much if anything, and most of the time it's not because they're broke. The other big problem I've noticed is that, because they are downloading, they aren't getting all of the info about the recording (personnel, dates etc.) and therefore aren't learning as much from their listening as they should. An important point of learning to listen is to be able to recognize specific players and their stylistic nuances. There certainly are resources to obtain this information, but I usually have to hound them to do it. The better students are pretty good about this, but many of the mid-level students really don't seem to "get it". 2) They tend not to appreciate things as much when they're free. For me, this applies also to private lessons taught outside of my school load- students pay attention and prepare much better when they are paying for a lesson. I used to frequently teach for free, thinking I was providing a service, but I found that there was much less progress and it ended up frequently as a waste of time for all involved. I do, however, still give free lessons on occasion when I know the student is broke but genuinely interested, or a potential student is visiting campus. As far as free music downloading, I agree with Paul that this is leading to an overall decline in interest.
  14. Go to this thread and read post #35.......
  15. Hope he opted for the extra insurance.
  16. I think OP's ass was incredibly overrated.
  17. Woody Herman always hated it when people requested music attributed to other bands. My favorite response of his was, when asked to play a Glenn Miller tune, he replied: "When they find the plane, I'll play his music!"
  18. Hell, the human ones have an off switch; I'm more concerned with the on switch... Just make sure it's not turned to "julienne".
  19. It sure does.......I remember some REALLY bitter winters in Chicago. I had some gigs in Fargo and Duluth (in January) some years ago, and it was RIDICULOUSLY cold. Like 100-below-zero wind chill, it just burned to try to breathe.
