  1. Happy birthday Edward!
  2. Happy birthday Daniel!
  3. Isn't that Travis Bickle's zipcode?
  4. Anyone see this? I thought it was excellent. I was born in 1958, so I wasn't really aware of a lot of what was going on at the time (I did become aware later, when I was older). I remember when JFK was killed in '63, mostly because of my parents' response and watching (black & white) TV. I remember standing along the highway in my hometown (Indianola, IA) when LBJ passed through. The events of the later 60s I remember with a lot more clarity. One thing that struck me when watching this was the parallels to our current situation regarding Iraq. The immensity of the anti-war protest was amazing. I can't help but feel that the younger generation of today hasn't really mobilized in this regard. I'll bet we have some members here who were active in that era. I'd love to hear some stories. The film footage used was excellent, much more in-depth than the usual cliched stuff we see from this era. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and plan to purchase the DVD. Edited for spelling clams Also, this has potential for getting "political" so move it to politics if you want, Jim :rsmile:
  5. You dig?
  6. Why is this necessary? They're both significant and they're both great. I love them both. Apples and oranges. Now if you'd included a Diz/Trane vs. Bird/Monk option...............
  7. Actually Wayne Wallace is a very fine trombonist from San Francisco.
  8. There's a new Monk and Trane CD?
  9. h A p P y B i R t H d A y U p R i G h T b I l L ! ! ! Hope you had a great day my bass clef brother!
  10. Kenny G putting himself on a track with Pops, now THAT'S necrophilia!
  11. Ralph Sharon. He started with Tony in 1957 and stayed through 1965, then rejoined Tony in 1979 and stayed until recently, when I believe he retired.
  12. So maybe there's some unheard Sonny coming out in the near future? Outstanding!
  13. When I was a kid there were many foods I hated that I now love, and there were many foods that were kid-related that I now can't stand. My parents telling me "it's good for you" or "it's bad for you" didn't make a bit of difference; I had to figure it out on my own. You know, touch the hot stove after you were warned not to. Listening to music was/is a similar journey. Many artists I didn't "get" when I was young I now love (like Monk and Mingus). Many of the things I listened to then I eventually grew away from. Once again, being told what I should and shouldn't like made no difference to me. I did frequently seek advice from my peers, and this advice widened my musical horizons. So I guess my point is that our young friends should be allowed their youthful indulgences without having to endure too much browbeating. We need to cultivate a new generation of jazz fans, and we don't need to be chasing them off with elitist attitudes. That being said, if JK or anyone else asks the membership what they think of a specific artist or recording, they should be prepared to hear honest opinions be they good or bad. And we owe them no less than an honest opinion.
  14. He's also the star of a tasty Ben and Jerry's flavor: Wavy Gravy:Caramel and Cashew Brazil Nut ice cream with Chocolate Hazelnut Fudge Swirls & Roasted Almonds Not allowed on my diet anymore unfortunately.
  15. I'm down with you Jim, I love Sonic Tonic. I got to play w/Ron a few times when I was living in Chicago. The guy is a mutha. I also like this one:
  16. I snagged both of these as soon as they came out, admittedly more for the presence of JoeHen than Wynton. Much as I love Wynton, I think Joe is the real star of these sides. Wynton very wisely comps relatively sparsely when Joe is blowing. And Joe does sound great on these. The trio swings hard and provides a great bed for Joe, but there's not a lot of interaction. Still A+ music though.
  17. That was just a little off-topic. BTW, I love Last Session. Billy Harper, Harold Mabern et al.......what's not to love?
  18. At least he's not playing the banjo. Looks like there's another level of the musical food chain below trombone. I wonder if he's playing "The Last Time I Sawed Paris". Or perhaps "I Sawed About You". Think he gets turned on when he plays Donna Lee? OK, I'm done. For now.
  19. I have unconditional love for Wynton Kelly. He comps great behind soloists, plays beautiful melodic horn-like right hand lines and can get a Timmons-like bluesy feel when desired. He's in my top five favorite pianists. Besides his own leader recordings I love him on Roll Call, Cannonball Adderley Quintet Plus , Smokin' at the Half Note, Lee Morgan's Dizzy Atmosphere, Newk's Time, Miles' Blackhawk.......any many more. He's in that category "if he's on it, I'll buy it". I'm so glad I got the VeeJay Mosaic. This is one time when I can say with no reservations the words I LOVE WYNTON!

  21. Yes, I had a Wizzer. Several, in fact. Remeber the Wizzer hockey game? Actually it was pretty lame. Still have and use a Lava Lamp. Several, in fact. Played a lot of video arcade games in the late 70s- Battle Zone, Galaxian, Asteroids, Tempest, etc. Fan of the frisbee & "frolf". I had a Strombecker 1/32 slot car set that rocked. Got to love the Silly Putty. Rock'em Sock'em Robots- a friend had one, I always wanted one. One robot was always the "good" one and always won though. Mouse Trap, Operation- cool games that you would lose pieces to and not be able to play. NEVER WAS INTO: The whole Rocky Horror Picture Show obsession. Hackey sack. Rubik's cube.
  22. Well, that's another fine meth she's gotten him into.
  23. I tried this the other day and let me tell you, it does NOT suck!
  24. I believe it's spelled Berklee. I know George Garzone, Bill Pierce and Frank Tiberi all teach there. There are probably others as well. I haven't heard too many Tiberi clones, although Jsngry's bandmate Pete Gallio seems to have more than a little of Frank's influence (more from playing with him on Woody's band than applied study).
