  1. Thoroughly enjoyed his articles and review in Down Beat and his work with R. Crumb? Sad to hear (even if not surprised after watching 'American Splendor') that he suffered from depression, among other health problems.
  2. The 21 LP set had 334 performances (115 were unissued at the time of publication). Mosaic Records were selling the vinyl set for $179 (plus postage) back in the mid eighties.
  3. Hope it's not too late to send Happy Birthday wishes! So...
  4. Charlie Shavers 'Gershwin, Shavers and Strings' (Bethlehem, mono) orchestra conducted by Sy Oliver Shavers was one of the musician it took me time to 'get into'. For a long time, I thought he overdid whatever he played. Now I really appreciate his musicianship!
  5. Uruguay's striker Diego Furlan was named best player of the World Cup! A well deserved award for the Atlético Madrid player.
  6. The Fontana ten incher was quite a hit in its time. It went through a couple of further pressings and is not really that rare! What to look for on this 10" is the front cover. The original 1957 release which is more difficult to find looked like this: Later French Fontana releases added 'Prix Louis Delluc 1957' and later 'Prix Louis Delluc 1957 - Grand Prix du Disque 1958 - Académie Ch. Cros' between the black top and the film title as the film and its soundtrack gathered recognition.
  7. Half of the money went to Mrs. Buckner, who probably took care of the family expenses... Fair enough!
  8. Andrew Cyrille's Crashpad
  9. The real winner: Paul picked the winners of all the matches he was asked to predict :tup Spain was the best team and deserved its victory! The final match was too tense and did not produce great soccer but that's just the way most WC finals go! Viva Espana! My lunch today:
  10. The problem with coach Raymond Domenech lies with the French soccer federation which signed him to a four-year contract in 2006 after the French team reached the World Cup final (that was the infamous final that saw forward Zidane headbut Italy's Materzazzi). A number of soccer specialists criticized Domenech's selection at the time because of his erratic team management and decisions. A firm believer in astrology, Domenech stuck to a decision to eliminate a worthy player like Robert Pires from the national team because Pires was a Scorpio! Everything went wrong with Domenech's management of the French team these past years. The French officials who insisted on letting Domenech handle the team will face the consequences of their decision very soon.
  11. The only good thing about all this was that my temporary avatar was not Alice but John
  12. France is out!! Adieu les Bleus! The 1-2 defeat against South Africa means goodbye to Raymond Domenech and his infamous team. Good riddance! And good luck to France's next coach Laurent Blanc. He will have to start from scratch!
  13. I see my avatar back to its former self! This was the one that was being used earlier today: Now if anyone dares to accuse me of having had drinking visions - Dan could not let that one go by - let me just reply that I drink only tea in the morning! I have now drunk my daily dose of wine at noon and everything is back to normal
  14. Booker Ervin 'The Blues Book' (Prestige, blue label, mono) with Carmell Jones, Gildo Mahones, Richard Davis and Alan Dawson
  15. Surprise! I really liked the photo of Miles Davis and John Coltrane that I used for my avatar. It's been changed. I did not do it. Now my avatar is a William Claxton photo of John Coltrane at Newport in 1960. I like it! Wish however I had done the change myself! Has this happened to anybody else?
  16. It was nice to see Spain back in good form, not to speak of Portugal who had an open buffet at the North Korean goalmouth! Waiting now to see the French team kicked out of the World Cup!
  17. Victor Feldman 'The Arrival' (Contemporary, mono) with Scott LaFaro and Stan Levey
  18. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssss! Kickass music! A larger scan of the front cover (illustration by Morton Roberts): The foldout cover
  19. My WC TV watch yesterday concentrated on the never-ending saga of the French team disaster. French players and officials sank to a new low... The Irish also watched all this and enjoyed it like a well-deserved vengeance: Irish reactions
  20. ... and now the French team commits suicide (it's live on French TV) during a rare open training session: French team training interrupted
  21. Jack Coursil 'Black Suite' 'America), gravure universelle with Anthony Braxton, Arthur Jones, Burton Greene...
  22. People! Enough of this! It's only soccer This thread is beginning to look like the dressing room of the WC French team and that's the last place I want to be right now
  23. Rather enjoyed the Denmark-Cameroon match, specially the first half! Sorry to see Cameroon eliminated from the WC but their defense seemed out of shape by the second half and could not cope with the Danish fighting spirit.
