  2. Carmell Jones Select, disc 2
  3. Ahmet Ertegun was buried today i_n Istanbul. From AFP:
  4. I'm blessed with a rather tolerant spouse! She's not listening to jazz these days. Not like the early days of our life together when we went to concerts (Cecil Taylor at the Maeght foundation, Miles Davis at Salle Pleyel, Sam Rivers at Studio Rivbea, François Tusques and Beb Guerin in a Left Bank club, etc...). She still responds favorably when I play some Herbie Hancock sides. But closes her ears and gives me cold stares when Peter Brotzmann is on! Time to plug in the headphones then!
  5. THAT looks like my listening room used to look like until fairly recently. One question! How do you access all those Mosaic sets that are stacked in the back row? You have given up on them for the time being?
  6. Mystery solved... From AP:
  7. Ben Webster Meets Don Byas (MPS)
  8. Get that one, if you don't have it yet! Smashing 3CD set! Another recommendation for the Sagajazz 'Black California' CD. It should be available - at reasonable price - from Caiman via Amazon. You can check their site: http://www.sagajazz.com/ It's in their Modern Jazz series. Sagajazz (produced by the people that gave us the now OOP Masters of Jazz CD discs. Their output in that series has sides from Dial, Savoy, Aladdin, Black & White, etc... You can also explore the early Dave Brubeck music!
  9. Masterpiece by Herman Leonard!
  10. From the South Florida Sun-Sentinel today.
  11. Ed Ford's name does not appear on any of the Mound City Blue Blowers recordings. Never hears of this Ford!
  12. Bobby Hutcherson 'Dialogue' (BN, mono)
  13. Jim, lamb is a much more interesting dish than turkey. Your recipe looks fine. Other suggestions for side dishes would be mushrooms and onions. Make sure you keep the meat for two days at the most in the coldest section of the fridge. Not in a closed box.And don't wrap it in aluminium paper! Bon appetit!
  14. I'm all confused
  15. Back in the days when I was listening to a lot of classical music, my favorite Mahler 4th was the 1939 live version by Willem Mengelberg with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. It's still available. A prodigious interpretation! If you mother can stand Karajan, she'll love Mengelberg!
  16. I'd be curious to hear the answer to that also... Try the last 30 seconds of track 2. It's good on my circa "80s OJC vinyl!
  17. J.J. Johnson 'Blue Trombone' (Columbia 6-eye, stereo) with Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, Max Roach
  18. That was Ian Hamer. He died on Sept. 23 in Brighton. He was 73. Ian Hamer Correct about Aaron Bell. He died in 2003.
  19. 7. Charlie Christian Tea For Two Sept. 21, 1937 This Charlie Christian track is out of sequence. It was recorded on Sept. 21, 1939 (not 1937). Just nitpicking! Those Devilin' sets are essentials!
  20. United Archives is a French label that takes advantage of the EU 50-year copyright laws! Another one! Beside the Miles Davis box, they have issued 'Sarah Vaughan - 'The Columbia Years', 'Charlie Parker - 'The Last Years 1953-1954', 'Louis Armstrong - 'The Nice & Philadelphia Concerts 1948-1949' and probably others. Nothing new under the sun. Have not checked any of these sets.
  21. I attended various performances by the Arkestra in NYK back in the mid-sixties . There were no records being sold at the time. Saw the first sale of the LPs at concerts when the Arkestra traveled to France in the early 70s!
  22. Right up to his death, his life was the stuff of legends. His older brother Nesuhi should also be remembered. Nesuhi was the one responsible for the great jazz albums that were released on Atlantic. He also helped Lester Koenig at the beginnings of Contemporary Records. Jazz fans should be forever grateful to those sons of immigrants who helped popularize the best of American music!
