Play ball! 2019 MLB season thread
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I mean when the grind of squatting/catching/all the travel seems to catch up to catchers. Catchers put in so much time with pitchers its hard to maintain their batting. At least that was Jason Varitek's excuse for each one of his late season hitting swoons. -

Nice but in this day and age of expert pitch framing, you do notice a catcher who is doing his job. I'm surprised he doesn't compare a tired bassist to a first-string catcher whose bat inevitably tires out in August/September. -
Found youtube links here to the 45 audio http://www.45cat.com/record/x5520 And what is up with this European release: http://www.45cat.com/record/ep40090 Blue Room and Zec are on the BN New York/Detroit Junction but where do Alone Together and Compulsory come from?!

Stumbled across this one and wondering if anyone can shed light on it. Discogs says 1958 which means it pre-dates the brief period when Billy was leading or co-leading some LPs (pre-Xanadu I mean). And its always tricky with his name because there was a smooth jazz or soul guy by the same name much later and it looks like maybe a singer by that name was active in the 50s or later. I went for a copy of this one because anything with Basie-ites has to be the right Billy Mitchell and it definitely looks like a one-off singles session as I don't recognize the titles or that he ever recorded for Imperial again ... As always thanks in advance!

https://syncopatedtimes.com/jazz-revival-clarinetist-bob-wilber-has-died/ this is Wiki's source. With him gone that's probably my absolute last shot at finding the Bechet Society CD that Wilber led and and David Bubba Brooks guested on. RIP.

So Sale couldn't finish off the Yankees last weekend, and now he can't stop the bleeding. What a fucking joke. I revise my recent comment: 10 games above .500 is their kryptonite, 5-7 above is their level. Supremely, pathetically, embarrassingly average. When they finally give up, the call ups will probably be so sad that the final record is right around 81 wins. -
Totally new? Easiest to locate would be Jimmy Smith Home Cookin' (BN) (Freddie Roach Down To Earth (BN) is also very good but only issued on CD in Japan). Allen Lowe produced I Should Care a trio date from 1980 that's excellent - there's one inexpensive copy on discogs right now but maybe not so cheap after shipping to yurope. There's also a Sir Charles Thompson thing on Columbia and an Oliver Jackson led date on Black & Blue. He was Bill Doggett's first tenor, more or less, and a great deal of his early work is on one of the Doggett Chronological Classics I am only now lacking a 78 he did in 1949 and a track from a compilation that was issued as a party-favor CDR to guests at Mario Schneeburger's 80th birthday party. Flurin tried to help with the Swiss archives but its not available. Schneeburger refused to share. I hate him.

Gotta be slow going its so much work! But I am doing the same thing for Percy France so I can't criticize the urge.
-
That's what I was thinking I should look for, promo ads to see approximately when it hit stores, and that settles it. We're back to 1959 as the recording date. Thanks!
-
True. for my purposes there would be better "flow" if I decided its not 1960 recording date but you got to go with what you have so ... unless anyone chimes in with other info, it is what he say it is.
-
This seems a remarkable achievement not only to have every recording in order but to work your way thru so many. Are you programming CDs on the fly with each new one? I presume you have a Sonny discography to consult but I hope its up to date. And when you get to the 1960s do you have all those boots of live recordings? My Percy France sessionagraphy is seeming more and more like a cakewalk compared to your project.
-
That's it, and you saved me from an error as I understood it to be 1959 not 1960. Thanks.
-
Could someone please look up recording date/location for Sir Charles Thompson And The Swing Organ I know its a 1959 issue not sure about recording date etc. Thanks!

Yeah it would be nice to know what Pepper thought of the experience.

No more trades possible so let's get some predictions going for the last two months: Red Sox: I feel like 10 games over .500 is their level, and anything near 15 games over their kryptonite. They miss the playoffs. Yankees, Indians and Astros win their divisions. Astros for the World Series. Braves in the East, Cubs in the Central though that may be wishful hoping more than rational belief. -
Glad for a reminder to go into the stacks for some Junior Cook solo work! I've listened to the Steeplechases much more than the other labels (and in the end you've convinced me that the Louis Hayes LP, which I've pondered before on discogs, is not worth it even if available for a buck. I prefer Strozier of an earlier era, and Thomas only on his blues CD with Houston Person. YMMV.)

I was just coming here to say "its an OK trade deadline, now the Astros will kick the Yankees butts and keep them out of the World Series ." Can't believe they made two blockbuster trades for elite pitchers two out of three years. They must really think they were robbed in the ALCS. -

It's strange 3:53 pm and nothing involving the Sox or Yankees have hit the wires. I know a lot of stuff usually gets done right up to the deadline and reporting isn't done until after 4 pm but still ... its very quiet for the AL East. -

Reyes seems to be a very mixed bag. Lots of homers, but only 46 ribbies when he's hit 27 out of the park to date? That's hard to do unless you truly are an all or nothing hitter. Strikeouts are out of control, BA dropped in his second season, OBP is poor. He seems like a swing from the heels kind of player, the epitome of the game today unfortunately. The one thing he has going for him is being only in his age 23 season, and the fact that Cleveland is more homer friendly than San Diego's park, if I am not mistaken. I guess when Puig leaves, the Indians may have in Reyes a new Edwin Encarnarcion, who they let go for no particular reason thus creating the need for hitting in the first place. Well him and Brantley being sent away. -
I don't think its that cryptic: The comment about "swing era tenor" was a required attempt to categorize Warne, to put him in a box with a label, for everyone must be categorized or else cannot be evaluated.

So the Indians gave up two months and one year of Bauer for two months of Puig. I do not get that. -
I thought this might be a goof photo when I read the subject.

Very glad to hear that the archives were placed in a storage unit sometime before and it sounds like they were willed to the Institute and the Armstrong House. I had visions of a landlord ordering the pitching of things into a dumpster. -

He's also been terrible this season if I'm not mistaken but is under team control for several years to come. Honestly it sounds like the kind of guy the Mets who are so budget conscious should hold onto. But nobody knows what the hell they are doing or thinking at any given time.
