  1. Stunning news. He was especially good in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.
  2. Thanks Tom for a very enjoyable, standards-heavy BFT. Only the vocal track really didn't float my boat - and I'll bet it was someone justifiably famous - but as is often the case, I don't have a lot of guesses. Track 4 - Joe Pass on "The Very Thought of You"? Track 5 - Mulgrew? Track 7 - A little strange as the organ sounds pre-bop but the tenor doesn't. The warmth of the sound makes me think Houston Person but I doubt I am correct. Thanks Tom, looking forward to the discussion as I am sure the collective wisdom of the group will come up with quite a few answers before the reveal.
  3. Glad I stumbled across this thread, I just grabbed a used/like new copy on Amazon for $15. Thanks MG.
  4. Interesting question, I hope someone chimes in. I got new strings for Christmas and should probably replace the ones that have been on my guitar since September 2012. Or should I? I can't hear any change, I used to change strings only when I broke one. I play every day or close to it and its been 16 months. Is it a given that I should be changing strings and even if I don't hear a change, I'll notice the change when I do put in the new ones?
  5. And their shortstop is a greybeard who played 18 games last year due to injury and, what else ... oh yeah, the greatest closer in history is sitting home in Panama and even if their set up man takes over and does a decent job, who is the new set up man? I got it ... they'll trade for Papelbon!
  6. In a shocking turn of events, the Yankees kept throwing money at the star Japanese pitcher until he said "yes". That's $450 million or so committed to the new catcher, CF, RF and starting pitcher. Makes the 1/4 of a billion dollars spent after the last time they missed the playoffs in 2008 look like chicken feed. I just pray to God it doesn't end up with the same result as in 2009.
  7. Only a few left, and me and Jim makes two fewer! (This one was worth going for the hard copy not a download)
  8. It was last weekend but I just got the photos from my wife's phone. Calvin Newborn and the Al Watters Sextet. I had no idea about this group he was sitting in with but from what little I can gather the leader lives and teaches in Jacksonville Florida and anyone nearby ought to seek him out. Great preaching saxophone (and flute and on one tune, clarinet) and the rest of the guys, mostly young, were fantastic too. From what I can tell online Watters spent a good deal of the 90s traveling the world with Ray Charles and he certainly fits into the tenor saxophone lineage of that band. Which brings us to Newborn who is almost as old as B.B. King but is playing a helluva lot of guitar, unlike the King of the Blues, these days. This picture was taken during what turned into his feature, on "Centerpiece" - (Calvin opened the tune solo, the band came in, he soloed, let the pianist have one, then as the erstwhile leader was bringing his flute to his lips, Calvin jumped in and turned in another great solo and took the tune out. Watters definitely looked a little miffed. We were seated almost as close as anyone but Calvin was facing away from us until this tune and my wife got a pretty good shot: Dick Hyman is next, in February.
  9. Turns out the photos my wife took on her phone weren't too bad. Here's the good Doctor and band. You can tell how intimate this venue is.
  10. Green button please.
  11. I am nearly speachless. And I thought I was lucky to have that Wilkerson in 1963 audio tape but I like this even better.
  12. Both. They are now the sole survivors of the cast.
  13. Tony Bosch will talk about injecting A-Rod with a variety of PEDs on 60 Minutes tonight after football.
  14. A-Rod's suspension was reduced to 162 games (but includes any playoff games in 2014) and here is why his appeal in Federal court is highly unlikely to be successful: http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/11/a-rod-will-try-to-appeal-to-federal-court-but-hes-not-likely-to-have-success/ A-Rod's statement is quite the piece of work: What the hell is that stuff about abolishing guaranteed contracts or initiating a one-strike and your out drug policy? I mean its a nice way to try to rally the union and make it all about the players instead of all about A-Rod but does anyone think that the union is going to roll over and allow guaranteed contracts to be tossed? And if there's an agreement to a one-and-done drug policy it will be because the members want it. My guess is that now the Yankees use the money to pay that Japanese pitcher absolutely whatever it takes to sign - 150 million over the length of the contract? $25 million is now off the books for 2014 and the Yankees are sure to use it, wisely or not.
  15. Yeah Jim, that's what I was thinking - and even though Lynch is now teaching in Miami this is my first chance to see him here (saw him only once in NYC at a Lincoln Center tribute to Blakey, so he got a few solo spots but not nearly as many as I'd expect him to get here). From the reviews I've found online of Calhoun's jazz releases, he doesn't hog the spotlight which is a plus as far as I am concerned. I am definitely leaning toward getting the tickets (they're $40 a piece, plus fees, and we can expect two sets of about 50-60 minute's length). Thanks everybody.
  16. Is it the reduced traffic around the holidays or does nobody know nothin' 'bout this guy? Bueller?
  17. Coming up in March Will Calhoun is coming to south Florida and I am curious about the jazz side of this musician, as I only know of him from his rock group Living Colour - and back in the day a little of them went a long way. Any opinions/advice? I am sort of hoping he drives a Blakey-esque band, as the front line is supposed to be Donald Harrison and Brian Lynch, with Marc Cary on piano/keyboards. As always thanks in advance.
  18. OK, now I see that the Vee Jay was issued with a Buddy DeFranco LP, and then again with a whole set of alternates. So I actually have what was issued in the 70s under Yusef's name as Contemplation - which was also reissued as standalone CD, but no alternates. Wondering if those alternates are worth re-purchasing.
  19. I feel like I've slept a bit on Mr. Lateef, for several reasons. One being my knee-jerk reaction to the tonality of the flute in jazz, and also due to the perception/understanding that his music went more 'out' as time went on, and when I first became aware of him (and having felt a little burned having followed Coltrane to the edges of the universe) and having so much other music to enjoy wholeheartedly, I never sought out his leader dates. I have the sidemen gigs, at least quite a few of them, and wasn't there a Vee Jay leader date that came out on a two-fer with another record? I also had his Argo release but got that mostly because I was collecting Argo at that time. Anyway, I feel like I really need to rectify this and having received multiple gift cards last night I plan to do so very soon. Contemplation, and the Savoy recordings look very much up my alley, and I am curious about that Label M release, too. RIP.
  20. Marcello is correct, and Blake was fantastic, as was the guitarist, Jonathan Kreisberg. And the good doctor? Holy bleeep. What a show. That shot is almost a keepsake for this show - his finale started with him walking through the audience, 'playing' his cane. If I heard him right, he exclaimed "the cane is able!" Great venue, for anyone in south Florida who is wondering. Its run by a 501© non-profit and in addition to booking jazz, blues and vocalists, also stages plays and has a teaching program for musicians of all ages. Just recently the city council voted to sell the space to the organization, they have 30 months to raise a couple of million dollars and I'll definitely be supporting them. Rather than theater seating there are large tables, with seats assigned by the order of ticket purchase, so the quicker you buy the closer you sit but its impossible to have a bad seat. Non-premium tickets get you a chair in back or on the side wall, and I presume GA tickets are standing-room. But now we know that its a BYOB facility, and that includes whatever food you want to bring. So people at our table had hors'd'ouvres and others had take-out containers for their dinners. We will definitely 'order in' when we go to see Calvin Newborn in a few weeks. And MG - Lonnie actually looked quite skinny and somewhat frail. I really hope he is in good health. Per AMG he is only 71 and I was guessing late 70s, partially based on his appearance.
  21. I think I get double credit for this one, since his biggest hit was "Wildfire," the story of a girl and her horse.
